“Get out and close the door behind you.” Jaz ordered her secretary.
The moment the door closed, she sauntered around her desk toward me. Her eyes never left my own. She stopped directly in front of me, her hand reaching up to trace my features. I sighed in ecstasy as pleasurable sparks trailed along under her fingertips. Her face was filled with awe as she took me in.
“I never thought I would get this.” She whispered. “You hear stories about going rogue. That wolves who go rogue lose their chance at a true mate.”
I reached up, gently taking her hand from my face. A soft moan fluttered from her lips as my lips brushed across her knuckles. I wanted to take her in her office. The pull of the mate bond was almost too strong to deny. I knew I needed to control myself. I hadn’t asked her mother what was so important that she would suggest her daughter go rogue, but I knew it had to be deeper than her law career. She could have built a firm anywhere. It took something more profound to make someone run from their pack. I would need to take my time and get to know my mate before taking things further.
“Well, Alpha, we should get down to brass tacks here.” She said, clearing her throat before abruptly returning to her seat behind her desk.
“Sloan. You’re my mate and Luna. There’s no need for formalities with me.” I smiled.
“Okay, Sloan. Tell me exactly what the issue is you’re having.”
“I recently assumed control of the Deep Fang pack.” I started, studying her response. Only the slight rise of her eyebrows indicated there was something deeper at play with her and the pack. “I’ve been struggling to get the council to give their stamp of approval on the merger. Your mother actually referred me to you. She said you have some connections on the council and might be able to push this through for me.”
“I do have connections, but I need to know everything you know or suspect about who or what is causing the hold up before I can proceed. Is there anyone you can think of that would want to stop this merger? Anything you’ve done in the past that could lead to the council having doubts about you expanding your control?”
“The only person I could think of that wouldn’t be happy about the merger is the former Alpha’s son. If you’re asking me if I mistreat my people or ever got out of control as a young pup, the answer is no. I did my fair share of acting tough and womanizing in my younger years, but nothing out of the norm.”
“So, you believe Gregory Lemont may be behind the slowdown of the paperwork. That would make sense; no young Alpha wants their pack given away before they get a chance to run it.” Jaz nodded, scribbling notes on a yellow legal pad. “The good news is, I think I know exactly who to speak to on the council to move this along. The bad news is I need permission to interview some of your pack members.”
“Permission granted. You’re their Luna; you don’t need my permission to do anything.” I laughed.
“That’s not why it’s bad news, Sloan. I am a rogue. Pack wolves don’t particularly care to talk to rogues for any reason, and they absolutely cannot be under Alpha command when they speak to me.”
“Well, that is a bit of a conundrum. I can have my beta ask for volunteers, explain the situation. Maybe they will be a bit more willing after they know why.”
“Great! Now that the business is settled, how about you make dinner plans for the two of us. I would love to get to know my mate outside of work.” She giggled. “I’m done for the day at five. You can pick me up here.”
She came around the desk, giving me a quick hug before sending me on my way. I took advantage of the embrace and inhaled her scent deeply. Even though I knew she had other work to do, the thought of leaving my mate so soon after finding her was painful. The memory of her smell would have to hold me over until our dinner.
By the time I pulled up in my rental car in front of her office, I had secured reservations at the most exclusive restaurant in the city. It was fortunate that the place was owned by one of the local packs, part of why it was so difficult to get a table. They catered to wolves; the only humans in the place were their guests. The difficulty getting in made human’s even more eager to eat there, though most would never have the chance.
My jaw dropped when Jaz exited her office building. I didn’t know how she had found time to obtain a dress for dinner or time to change, but she had. She was in a form-fitting floor-length black dress with a long slit up the side, giving me the occasional peek at her gorgeous legs. I was practically drooling over my mate while I sat in the car, forgetting my manners momentarily. The corners of her mouth turning down brought me back to my senses. I moved quickly to exit the car and meet her.
“There you are.” She smiled. “I thought for a second maybe you had second thoughts about having a rogue mate.”
“Never.” I assured her. “Truth be told, I was stunned by how beautiful you are and forgot myself.”
Her laughter floated through the air, like music to my ears, as I helped her into the passenger seat. Keeping my eyes on the road to safely make it across town in traffic was a feat. The small sports car was filled with Jaz’s scent, and all I wanted to do was stare at her, commit her face to memory for safekeeping.
“Oh, I love this place. Fantastic pick, Alpha.” She cheered as I pulled up in front of the restaurant. “They don’t typically allow rogues in but considering almost every Alpha in the region is my client, they make an exception.”
We ordered our meals and a bottle of champagne before settling into the business of getting to know one another. My mate was exceptional. In only three years, she had managed to make herself invaluable to other wolves in the area, learning everything she could about various forms of law instead of settling on a specialty. Within a year, she had been able to take the werewolf clients from the firm she worked for and open her own. My life was tame in comparison. I had been born an Alpha and taken over the position when my father felt ready to retire.
“I can’t wait to get you home to the pack and officially make you my Luna.” I cooed.
“Sloan.” She cautioned. “I can’t go back to the pack.”
“Of course you can! I know Alphas tend to be skittish about taking in rogues, but you’re my Luna. You being a rogue doesn’t matter.”
“No, Sloan. It’s not that. That pack was awful to me; they made fun of me because of things out of my control. My weight, my height, my features, my skin color. I can’t go back there. I won’t. I understand if this means you have to reject me, but I will never go back there.”
