I looked around the room. My belongings were kept in the cupboard except for the gun. I soon realized the building was the Bureau's headquarters. The guards came with a file. I had to put my signatures on them. It was like a visiting register. About half an hour later someone knocked on the door. "May I come in?" A woman asked from the other side.
"Yeah...please." I uttered. She was the officer Ansh had sent.
"I am Officer Megha Singh. Sir has asked me to accompany you to the parking lot." she politely introduced herself .
I smiled and nodded. She took me through the corridors and we went down the lift to the ground floor. She didn't utter a word and just had a straight face
"Were you also there in today's shootout?" I asked.
"Your drug affair? Yeah..." she replied bluntly. Clearly she was too pissed off.
"So why wasn't I arrested?"I asked. It was quite odd when everyone had witnessed the deal...what stopped them from arresting me.
"Officer Tarun Arora, our chief never allows us to arrest anyone without evidence. You rich kids always get free after some trials. Freeing you...saves our time, energy and money. This time it cost us by an officer's injury and Ansh sir's suspension." she looked at me angrily from the reflection on the lift wall.
"He's what?" I exclaimed. "What about the gun?"
"What gun?" She seemed confused. Clearly the matter was kept confidential.
It was dark outside. I checked my watch and it was almost ten. There were only a few cars parked at the parking lot. Ansh stood beside a red one. He was busy looking at his phone.
"Hey! nice color.... You must be getting paid well!" I whistled and soon started to cough. My throat still hurt. Ansh was startled and switched his phone screen off. Though he was fast, I still managed to get a sneak peak. His wallpaper had a girl smiling at him. She was beautiful and had a lively smile.
Ansh gestured to the officer to leave, to which the officer just nodded and left. "Get in!" Ansh opened the door to the front seat. I stared at Ansh with a smile and got in. Ansh put on his seat belt and started the car. "Put on the seat belt..." he murmured while I was busy checking the music CDs kept in front of me. "Seat belt!" he said louder this time.
"Oh! sorry yes...", I lifted his eyebrows in a goofy way, "You too like old Bollywood classics?"I asked opening the CD cases. "Mom too loved them. But who keeps CDs nowadays!" I chuckled.
Ansh took the CD from my hand and put it in the music player. The roads were quite busy. We had to stop at almost every signal until we reached the highway. Ansh switched off the air condition and lowered the windows. The wind was pleasingly cold. I tilted my head towards the window and closed my eyes.
"A long car ride, pleasant weather and good music....love this!" I gushed. While I kept my eyes shut, I could notice Ansh keeping an eye on me once in a while.
"The music is to keep your mouth shut!" Ansh turned to me and again went back to keep an eye on the road. The car was speeding up on the empty road. "Don't talk as if we are friends."
I giggled and looked at Ansh, "So what do you want us to be?" I kept staring at him, making him miserable.
Ansh went pale for a moment. He pretended to not hear me. The trucks passing by blew loud horns which ruined the music. At once Ansh and I leaned forward to turn up the volume. Our fingers brushed. Ansh quickly removed his hand. My hand hovered over the music system for a few seconds and then I turned up the volume. I rested my head on the seat and again closed my eyes. I couldn't help but smile the whole time. The slight touch had my heart racing.
"Umm...the first day I saw you...were you...Did you take any kind of drugs?" Ansh hesitated, "You
didn't seem to be in control."
"And whatever I say...you will believe it?" I smirked. I lifted my right hand to my eye level and stared at the bandage over the skin where the intravenous cannula was inserted. "You are right...I wasn't in control of myself", I then turned to Ansh, "I think I...", I stopped. I was about to blabber about my mental condition to this man, on whom I was having a major crush, who happens to be a cop and who is apparently not interested in me but my dad's illegal trading.
"What?"
"I do take some mood stabilizers but they are on prescription and if you are talking about drug abuse, I am clean that way!" I shrugged.
"Why? Why do you need mood stabilizers?", He for the first time seemed concerned, "And it's hard to believe you not being a drug abuser... I mean your dad practically owns the business and you get new and good quality..."
"Are you...an NCB officer justifying using drugs?" I chuckled. I tried to divert the conversation from the medications.
"I was talking about you. Not justifying a pathetic thing destroying the country's youth!" Ansh defended.
"Relax...I was kidding. Look I did drugs a long time back but now it just messes up with my system. And it's not just the youth that is being destroyed...all things are at stake and I know you know better!" I frowned, "And you did examine me for drugs, right?"
Ansh jumped at his seat, "You are quite strange...aren't you afraid of me catching you ...your family?"
"I am afraid...but for you!" I said softly and sighed. Ansh slowed the car and looked at me while I wistfully looked back at him. " Don't get into this! Trust me...I have seen people getting in and getting lost."
"I have lost someone special to this s**t and I need to stop this for her sake." A tear film formed in Ansh's eyes. He stopped the car and looked around. "I need to..." He pulled out a pack of cigarettes.
"Sure...another pathetic thing destroying the country's youth!" I just smiled. I knew he was talking about his dead girlfriend but it was killing me inside.
Ansh parked the car at the side of the highway and got off. He tried lighting the cigarette but failed due to the wind. I got out of the car and covered the flame of the lighter with my hands.
"You miss her!" I whispered. I stared at those eyes. The eyelashes trembled.
"We are not friends...Don't cross your limits." Ansh replied in a shaky voice.
I smiled and nodded. "So are you not coming to the club? Driving alone is the worst thing!"
Ansh shook his head sideways, "Driving with a dead person next to you....that's the worst thing." Ansh took a puff of the cigarette and blew out the smoke. The light from the vehicles passing fell on his face, his handsome face.
I remained silent this time. I watched Ansh finish the whole thing, I watched Ansh fighting hard to not let a tear come out of his eyes. I knew I was falling for Ansh but I silently knew that us getting together was near to impossible.
"How old were you when your mother..." Ansh broke the silence.
"Twelve...I think I had just had my birthday..." My voice cracked.
"How...I mean what happened?" Ansh threw the cigarette butt on the road and crushed it with his boot.
"Umm...actually..." I straightened my back and looked around, "I don't remember I...I was too sm..small." I stammered, I lied. I did remember some part of it but the trauma did wipe out some of the events from my memory. I knew dad had something to do with mom's accident. "It's getting chilly now...Let's get to the club." I turned around and got inside the car. I knew that he knew I lied.
