Chapter 1

946 Words
Diana "Where are you?" Grace Garcia pushed me through my cell phone speaker. "I couldn't help but smile as I could already imagine her demonstrative eye rolling vividly. I quickly put on my jacket and pushed the strap of my bag over my right shoulder. Then I checked again whether I had packed my wallet and then stepped out of the apartment. I quickly scampered through the hallway and then left the building where I lived. In front of the door I stopped and looked around for my best friend, who actually wanted to wait for me here: "Grace? Where are you? I thought you were waiting for me out here." I didn't get an answer, but in a parking lot someone honked his horn once and attracted my attention. I looked at the car and saw Grace in the driver's seat. Grinning, I hung up and walked towards the car. Quickly I opened the passenger door and got into the car: "Hey, I'm sorry I took so long." "All right, I'm used to that," she said with an amused grin, looking at the road. "You almost make it look like I'm always late," I complained slightly and then threw my sports bag on the back seat before buckling up. She didn't say anything and just grinned at me. Played discontentedly I looked out of the window, grinned however, and watched, how she steered the car from the parking lot and threaded into the evening traffic. You could think it was lazy to drive the car to the gym instead of just running or jogging, but the gym wasn't exactly around the corner. Besides, we knew each other and ourselves well enough to know that neither of us wants to go home long after the workout. Hoping to start a new topic quickly, Grace started a new topic after a few quiet seconds: "What kind of equipment do you want to go to today? I thought about it briefly, because I had hardly thought about it so far: "It doesn't really matter to me. I simply take what is free. And you? I turned to her again and saw a thoughtful Grace: "Hmm, I think I'm going on a treadmill. So far I have a rather bad condition." I nodded and wondered if I should do the same. After all, my own condition wasn't really good either, but I blamed it on the fact that we hadn't been active sports for a long time. Our other activities and our previous lack of motivation had managed to keep us from any kind of sports activities for a long time. But somehow my best friend managed to get me to go to sports with her. After all, it was more fun together than alone and so far I was surprisingly happy to do it. About ten minutes later Grace parked in front of the gym and got out together with me. I quickly fetched our sports bags from the back seat and then walked up to the entrance with her in a good mood. Inside, many people were already romping around in sportswear and running from one piece of sports equipment to the next. We briefly showed our membership cards and then walked straight towards the ladies' dressing room. Fortunately the dressing room was almost empty, so that many lockers were still free. I opened one of the locker doors and threw in my jacket. As far as clothing was concerned, I was not the type of person to fold everything neatly, although I was rather neat in all other areas. I stripped off my street clothes and replaced them with my sports clothes, which consisted of black trousers and a sports bra in the same colour. Finally, I slipped my feet into my sneakers and tied my blond brown hair to a messy bun that would hold. Then I turned back to Grace, who was putting on her own shirt. "Are you ready?" I asked and locked the locker door. "Sure," she waited until I put the little key away and then walked with me to the door of the locker room. We ran together as if across the hall until we arrived in the spacious room where most of the equipment was trapped. I let my gaze wander through the long room and tried to see where two places were free next to each other. "Hey, look," Grace gently pushed me into the side: "There are just two treadmills free. Shall we grab them?" I followed her gaze and also took her into my sights: "Absolutely." We walked straight towards them together and tried to be as inconspicuous as possible. We scampered to the treadmills and climbed onto them. I turned to the settings and decided to start slowly. To be honest, I'm not really ready to fly right at the beginning. As soon as I had adjusted everything, I started the program and slowly started to run. Grace stuck the headphones in her ears next to me, as she would otherwise get side stitches after a short time, and then ran off as well. As I listened to the music coming out of the loudspeakers in the corners, I saw a little lost in thought through the floor-to-ceiling windows that formed a large window front in front of me. Under me on the streets the people were romping around and in this moment I was really grateful to be finished with the university today, so that I could finally switch off. Had I known, however, that something would happen that day that would completely mess up my life, I certainly wouldn't have been so relaxed.
