Chapter 18: The Magistrate's Gambit

1014 Words
Two days after the Ling caravan incident, a courier arrived at the gates of the Ling Manor. He bore the official seal of the Magistrate, his expression curt and his words clipped. The message was as cold as the morning air: a mandatory public hearing was to be held at the city square in twenty-four hours to address the "incompetence" of the Ling Merchant House. It was a direct summons, a political pincer movement designed to strip the Lings of their merchant license before they could mount a proper defense. The morning of the hearing, mist clung to the rooftops of Qinghe City, but it did little to dampen the heat of the growing crowd. The city square, usually a place for mundane trade and idle chatter, was packed with merchants, laborers, and high-ranking guild members. They were all here for the same reason: the public hearing summoned by Magistrate Wei. At the center of the square, beneath a raised wooden dais, stood the representatives of the two most powerful merchant families. Patriarch Zhao stood with his arms crossed, a sneer of practiced superiority etched onto his face. Beside him stood his associates, whispering into the ears of the city officials, their eyes darting toward the Ling family with predatory anticipation. Opposite them stood the Ling family. Ling Zhenghai looked tense, his jaw set in a line of grim determination. Madam Xu held his arm, her eyes scanning the crowd with obvious worry. But all eyes were on the young man standing slightly behind them. Ling Tianyu did not look like the sickly, frail youth who had spent three years in a coma. He was dressed in clean, sharp robes of deep midnight blue, his posture radiating a chilling, unnatural stillness. He looked as if he were observing a board game, not a trial that could strip his family of their livelihood. Magistrate Wei, a portly man who sweated profusely despite the cool morning air, cleared his throat and stepped forward to the railing of the dais. He gripped the wooden banister, his fingers stained with ink. "The Ling Merchant House stands accused of incompetence and failure to maintain the safety of the city roads," the Magistrate announced, his voice booming over the silence of the crowd. "Patriarch Zhao has provided testimonies claiming that the recent chaos on the Black Iron Mountain route is a direct result of the Ling family’s inability to manage their own caravan security. How do you respond, Ling Zhenghai?" Zhenghai stepped forward, but before he could speak, a voice cut through the air, smooth and cold as mountain ice. "Incompetence is an interesting word, Magistrate." The crowd turned as Ling Tianyu stepped forward. He did not bow, nor did he look intimidated. He met the Magistrate’s gaze with a steady, empty intensity. Patriarch Zhao let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "The boy speaks? The sickly brat who has done nothing but burn through silver? What could you possibly have to say about the duties of a merchant, boy?" "I say that the definition of incompetence should be reserved for those who leave their fingerprints on the scene of a crime," Tianyu replied, his voice calm. He turned his attention to the crowd. "My father was accused of failing to maintain the roads. Yet, it was the Zhao family who hired the so-called bandits at the Black Iron Mountain. It was the Zhao family who paid a premium to ensure those carriages were destroyed." A murmur of shock rippled through the gathered merchants. Zhao’s face turned a shade of mottled purple. "Slander!" Zhao roared, stepping toward Tianyu. "You have no proof! You are a child who spent years in a bed, delusional and out of touch with the world!" Tianyu reached into his sleeve and pulled out a wax-sealed scroll. He tossed it into the air, and it landed with a heavy, deliberate thud at the Magistrate’s feet. "This is not just an accusation," Tianyu said, his eyes locking onto the Magistrate. "This is a record of payments. Transfers from the Zhao family treasury to the very men who led the ambush. More importantly, Magistrate Wei, it includes the bribes paid to your own subordinates to ensure that the investigation into the Black Iron Mountain incident was halted before it could reach the Zhao gates." The Magistrate’s face went pale. He snatched the scroll, his hands trembling as he read the contents. The crowd went deathly silent. "I have spoken with the Merchant Guild," Tianyu continued, his voice rising just enough to carry across the square. "We have provided them with the blueprints for the Luminous Lamps. While the Zhao family seeks to destroy commerce through violence, the Ling family has sought to advance the city’s prosperity. I suspect the Guild would find it difficult to support a partner who burns trade routes to the ground." The leader of the Merchant Guild, a stern woman with a sharp eye for profit, stepped forward from the crowd. She looked at Patriarch Zhao, who was currently stammering as he tried to defend himself to a sweating Magistrate. She looked back at Tianyu, whose composure was terrifyingly absolute. "If these allegations are true," the Guild leader said, her voice hard, "then the Zhao family has compromised the stability of our entire market. The Guild cannot associate with those who threaten our profits." Patriarch Zhao realized, with a sudden, sinking dread, that he was losing. He looked at the Magistrate, but the official was too busy staring at the evidence in his hands to even look back. The political trap had been sprung, and the Zhao family was being systematically isolated in the eyes of the city's power brokers. "This is not over," Zhao hissed, his voice low enough that only Tianyu could hear. "On the contrary," Tianyu whispered back, his smile not reaching his cold, analytical eyes. "For you, Patriarch, it has only just begun." Tianyu turned away from the dais, his task complete. He had not just defended his family; he had stripped their rival of their most valuable shield: their reputation.
