Chapter 20: The Silent Shadow of Retribution

1093 Words
The Zhao Manor, usually a bastion of confidence and untouchable status, had become a tomb of stifled whispers and frantic energy. Inside the main hall, the air was thick with the scent of spilled tea and the metallic tang of Patriarch Zhao’s rage. A heavy mahogany chair lay splintered against the far wall, a casualty of the Patriarch’s outburst just moments before. Patriarch Zhao stood in the center of the room, his face a mottled, uneven shade of purple. His chest heaved with every breath, and he glared at the gathered group of subordinates, his eyes darting between them as if looking for the specific shadow that had betrayed him. "The numbers!" Zhao roared, his voice cracking. "The Magistrate had the exact ledger figures! Not just rumors, not just accusations, but the precise, verified amounts! Do you understand the implication of this?" He marched toward his chief accountant, grabbing the man by his robes and shoving him back. "They didn't just have a guess; they had proof! Which one of you is the rat? Who sold our ledger to the Ling boy?" The accountant, trembling so violently his teeth rattled, stammered, "Patriarch, I swear upon my ancestors! The ledgers are kept under triple lock. I haven't even spoken to a Ling servant in months!" "Liar!" Zhao spat, spinning around to face Elder Han, who stood near the window, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes unblinking and devoid of emotion. "Elder Han! You were supposed to handle the Ling family. You were supposed to break them. Instead, we have been humiliated in the city square, the Magistrate has turned his back on us, and our trade routes are beginning to wither. And now, we have a traitor within our own walls!" The room went deathly silent. The other subordinates looked at the floor, their breathing shallow, each hoping to deflect the Patriarch's fury elsewhere. "I want the Ling brat dead," Zhao snarled, his gaze fixing on Elder Han. "I don't care about the risk. I don't care about the Magistrate's scrutiny. He has embarrassed my family, he has dismantled our reputation, and he has made a mockery of my name. Go to the Ling Manor. Bring me his head before the sun rises tomorrow." Elder Han stared at the Patriarch for a long, uncomfortable moment. His expression did not change. He offered no verbal confirmation, no assurance of success. He simply gave a sharp, imperceptible nod, turned on his heel, and strode out of the hall with a fluid, predatory grace. As the Elder’s footsteps faded, the hall erupted into a chaotic, panicked bickering. "He’s going to kill the boy," one of the lieutenants whispered, his voice laced with fear. "If the Elder fails, the Ling family will retaliate. We are walking on thin ice!" "The Elder never fails," another argued, though his hands were shaking as he smoothed his uniform. "But what of the traitor? We have a leak! If the Elder kills the boy, the traitor will just tell the Magistrate everything!" "Shut up!" Zhao barked, collapsing back into a chair, his face buried in his hands. "Just find the leak! If I find out who sold us out, I will have their hands removed and fed to the street dogs!" While the Manor burned with paranoia, Elder Han sat in his private quarters, the room illuminated only by a single, flickering candle. He was not alone. Master Ma, still recovering from the psychological terror of the morning’s confrontation, sat on a wooden stool, his face drawn and pale. Beside him sat a grim-faced man dressed in the black-and-grey livery of the Iron Gale Sect. "The scout we sent to the Black Iron Mountain," the man said, his voice low and clinical. "He did not return." Elder Han poured a cup of tea, his hand steady. "And?" "He was the best tracker we had," the man replied. "He was instructed to report back three days ago. He failed to check in at the rendezvous point, and there has been no word since. He has either been captured or killed. The path is silent." Master Ma looked at Elder Han, his voice a dry rasp. "Elder, what if the rumors are true? What if there is a protector? A hidden expert who watched the battle, killed our scout, and is now waiting for us at the Manor? If I go back, I…" "Quiet," Han interrupted, his tone cold. He leaned forward, the candlelight carving deep, harsh shadows into his aged face. "I have thought long and hard about this 'expert.' Think, Ma. If the Ling family truly had a protector capable of suppressing your qi with a single flick of a finger, why would they let us raid their caravan? Why would they suffer the loss of their guards and their gold?" "Perhaps they were testing us?" Ma offered. "A supreme master does not 'test' with the lives of his own servants," Han countered, his eyes narrowing. "If there was a true monster hidden within that Manor, our scouts would not have survived to tell the tale. They would have been hunted down and executed the moment they stepped near the gate. No. This 'guardian' is a fabrication. The boy, Tianyu, is clever. He is using smoke and mirrors to hide his own weakness. He frightened you with a trick, Ma, and you let your fear turn a boy into a ghost." The man in the sect livery looked skeptical. "Then why did the scout not return?" "Because he was careless," Han said, rising from his seat. "He was a scavenger, not a warrior. I am going to the Ling Manor tonight. I will infiltrate the grounds, locate the boy, and I will see for myself what pathetic parlor tricks he is using to play this dangerous game. I shall find nothing more than a frightened boy trying to buy himself one more night of life." Han allowed the sentence to hang in the air, a silent promise of violence. "Then the Ling family will lose their only asset, and the city will finally return to order. Do not follow me. If I am not back by dawn, assume the Ling family possesses a power we cannot fathom, and burn all connections to the Zhao family." Elder Han reached for his blade, his movements devoid of hesitation. He slipped into the shadows of the room, and within a heartbeat, he was gone, a silent whisper in the dark, heading toward the Ling Manor to settle the score once and for all.
