Chapter 25 – Unraveling the Truth

1054 Words
It’s funny how a decision can change everything, but it doesn’t erase the past. As soon as I said those words—I choose you, Leo—I thought it would feel like a relief. That maybe I’d be free from all the uncertainty. But the truth was, it was only the beginning. We spent the rest of the evening together, but it wasn’t what I had imagined. I expected romantic gestures, lingering kisses, the usual things that followed a confession like that. But instead, we talked. And that talk was heavier than I had anticipated. Leo didn’t just want me to choose him—he needed me to understand him. Completely. He needed me to know everything. “I’m not perfect, Elara,” he started, his voice low, almost hesitant. “And I don’t expect you to think I am. I don’t expect you to save me, or to fix me. But I need you to know the truth—everything about me.” I looked at him, confused. “What do you mean? You already told me so much. What more is there?” Leo stood up from the couch, pacing for a moment. His hands ran through his hair, as though he was trying to find the right words. “There’s something you don’t know. Something I’ve kept hidden for a long time.” I waited, my heart thudding in my chest. I wasn’t sure I was ready for whatever came next, but I couldn’t back out now. Not after everything we’d been through. He stopped pacing and turned to face me, his eyes dark with something I couldn’t read. “It’s about my past. About the one thing I’ve never told anyone. Not even my closest friends.” I swallowed hard. Whatever it was, it was big. “Leo, you don’t have to tell me if you’re not ready—” “No,” he interrupted, shaking his head. “It’s not about being ready. It’s about you knowing what you’re getting into. I don’t want you to ever feel like I’ve lied to you, Elara. I need you to understand who I really am.” My pulse quickened. “Okay, tell me.” Leo took a deep breath, and I could see the way his jaw tightened as if he was bracing for impact. "I blame myself for what happened to my brother." His words hit me like a blow to the stomach. I couldn’t even process what he had just said. “What do you mean? Your brother?” Leo nodded, his gaze far away, as though he was looking back into the past. “His name was Alex. He was the one person I thought I could trust. He was my best friend, my closest family. We were inseparable.” I sat there, my mind trying to piece together the information. Leo had a brother. I never knew. “What happened to him?” A long pause stretched between us before Leo spoke again, his voice tight with emotion. “Alex died in a car accident. It was my fault.” I shook my head, not understanding. “Leo, how could it be your fault? Accidents happen—” “It wasn’t an accident,” Leo cut me off, his voice raw with emotion. “I was supposed to be with him that night. I promised I would be. But I didn’t go. I stayed behind. I was... I was with someone else. I was selfish. And because I wasn’t there, Alex died. And I’ll never forgive myself for that.” The weight of his words crushed me. I couldn’t imagine the guilt he must have carried for so long. My mind was still trying to wrap itself around the fact that Leo had a brother—and that he had lost him in such a tragic way. But then something clicked inside me, and I realized why he’d been so closed off, so distant. He hadn’t just been hiding from me. He had been hiding from himself. “Leo…” I whispered, standing up to approach him. “You can’t carry this by yourself. You’re not alone in this anymore. You don’t have to shoulder the weight of his death on your own.” Leo turned to face me, his eyes filled with a mix of pain and disbelief. “I don’t know how to let it go, Elara. I don’t know how to move forward. I don’t know how to be the man you think I am when I’ve been haunted by this for so long.” I reached out to him, my hands trembling as I touched his arm. “You don’t have to be perfect, Leo. You don’t have to be the man you think I want you to be. You just have to be yourself. And I’ll be here. Every step of the way.” For the first time, I saw something change in his eyes. A flicker of hope. A small crack in the walls he had built around himself. Leo took a step toward me, his hands trembling slightly as he cupped my face. “Elara, I’m scared. Scared that I’m too broken for you. Scared that you’ll leave once you know the full truth.” I shook my head, my heart aching for him. “I’m not going anywhere, Leo. I choose you. All of you. Even the broken parts.” His eyes softened as he leaned down, his forehead resting gently against mine. “I don’t deserve you.” “You’re wrong,” I whispered. “You deserve someone who’s willing to love you despite your flaws, despite your past. And I’m willing to be that person.” Leo closed his eyes, taking in a shaky breath. “I’ll try, Elara. I’ll try to be the man you deserve. I promise.” The weight in the room began to lift, and I realized, in that moment, that maybe—just maybe—Leo was starting to believe that he could be loved despite his mistakes. That he could heal. And as we stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, I knew that whatever came next, we would face it together. Because that’s what love was: accepting the broken parts, the messy parts, and still choosing to stay. ---
