Chapter 13 – A Test of Loyalty

1116 Words
I spent the next few days trying to focus, trying to convince myself that I could still hold onto the line between my work and what was growing between me and Leo. But the truth was, it was getting harder to tell where one ended and the other began. The lines had blurred so much, and I was finding it impossible to untangle them. Leo had become an undeniable force in my life. His presence, his gaze—it was all-consuming. And yet, it was still this strange, unspoken thing between us. Nothing had changed in terms of his rules. No crossing boundaries. No getting personal. But with every word he spoke, every look, every quiet moment in his office, it was harder and harder to pretend I didn’t feel it—the pull, the tension, the connection. I arrived at his office that morning, feeling the weight of the silence hanging in the air. Leo was already there, sitting at his desk, papers scattered in front of him. His posture was stiff, controlled. But I could tell—there was something different today. There was an edge to him, something sharp that cut through the air. “Good morning,” I said quietly, my voice betraying the uncertainty I felt. Leo didn’t immediately acknowledge me. He just stared at the papers in front of him, his fingers drumming lightly against the desk. A few moments passed, and then he finally looked up, his eyes locking with mine. “Elara,” he said, his voice smooth, but there was an underlying weight to it. “I need to know if I can trust you.” I froze, unsure of how to respond. Trust. The word felt so heavy, like it carried a burden neither of us had spoken about. “I—” I started, but he cut me off. “This isn’t about the story anymore,” Leo continued, his gaze never wavering. “This is about you and me. About how far you’re willing to go.” I blinked, my heart suddenly racing in my chest. “What do you mean?” He leaned forward, his elbows resting on the desk, his fingers intertwining. “I need to know if you’re loyal. If you can handle the truth. The whole truth. Because once you cross this line, there’s no going back. I’ve given you a chance to step back, to walk away. But I don’t think you will. Not anymore.” I could feel his words sink deep into me, like a stone dropped into still water. They rippled through me, stirring something inside I hadn’t fully realized was there. I swallowed hard, trying to steady myself. “What’s the test?” Leo’s lips curled slightly, but it wasn’t a smile. It was more like a challenge—like he was daring me to step into whatever darkness he had been hiding. “I’ve been following your work closely,” he said, his tone colder now. “And I know there’s more to you than just the words you write. You’ve already seen what kind of man I am. You’ve felt it. Now it’s time to see if you can survive it.” Before I could ask him to elaborate, he pushed a file across the desk toward me. I hesitated for a moment, then picked it up. The file was thick, heavy with something important, something confidential. As I opened it, I saw pages of documents, names, photographs, and pieces of information that made my stomach tighten. “What is this?” I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to remain calm. Leo didn’t answer immediately. He just watched me closely, his eyes sharp, studying my every reaction. “This,” he said quietly, “is everything. This is the truth about the man you’ve been writing about. It’s also the truth about me.” My heart skipped a beat. The words hit me like a punch to the gut. This wasn’t just about the book anymore. It was about him. About everything he had kept buried beneath that cold exterior. I flipped through the pages, absorbing the details. There were references to illegal dealings, shady partnerships, threats, and power plays. There were pictures of people I didn’t recognize—people who had been part of his life, his past. But one photo caught my attention. It was of a woman. Her eyes were familiar, almost too familiar, and I felt a chill run through me. “Who is she?” I asked, unable to keep the tremor out of my voice. Leo’s expression darkened, his jaw clenching. “Someone from my past. Someone who betrayed me. And someone who I can’t seem to shake.” I looked back at the photo, the woman’s smile sending a shiver through me. There was a history here—something Leo was clearly not ready to talk about. “So… why are you showing me this?” I asked, trying to steady my breathing. “What do you want from me?” Leo leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving mine. “I want you to understand that trust isn’t just about sharing secrets. It’s about what you do with them once you have them. I want to see if you can handle it. If you’re loyal enough to keep it between us. Because once you know the truth, there’s no going back.” His words hung heavy in the air, and for the first time, I understood the weight of the decision before me. It wasn’t just about writing a book anymore. It wasn’t just about following the rules he had set. It was about my own choices, my own loyalty. I felt the weight of the file in my hands, the gravity of what it meant to be tangled up in Leo’s world. To be part of this dark, complicated web he had spun. “I’ll keep it,” I said, my voice steady, even though my mind was racing. “But you need to know something, Leo. I’m not afraid of the truth. I’m afraid of what happens when it all falls apart.” He didn’t reply immediately. He just stared at me, his gaze unwavering, as if measuring my words, weighing them. And in that moment, I realized something: I wasn’t just caught in his world—I was becoming a part of it. Whether I wanted to or not. Leo’s lips twitched, almost like he was about to smile, but he stopped himself. Instead, he said, “Good. You’ll need to be. Because this is only the beginning.” And just like that, the test had begun.
