The Past That Haunts Us
The tension in the mansion had reached a fever pitch. It wasn’t just the weight of our decisions hanging in the air—it was something else, something darker, something I hadn’t seen coming.
I should’ve known that when you step into Leo’s world, it’s never just about you and him. There’s always something lurking beneath the surface, something from his past that refuses to stay buried. And I had no idea how close it was to finding its way to us.
It happened the morning after I had chosen him. I had barely gotten a few hours of sleep, my mind racing with the aftermath of my decision. Leo had kept his distance, giving me space as I tried to process everything. But there was a sense of foreboding in the air, as if something terrible was on the verge of breaking free.
That’s when it happened.
The door to Leo’s study slammed open, and a figure stepped inside. I froze, my heart jumping into my throat. I didn’t recognize the person, but the cold, calculating energy radiating from him was unmistakable. He wasn’t someone you wanted to cross.
Leo was already on his feet, his entire body tensing at the sight of the stranger. “What the hell are you doing here?” he demanded, his voice sharp and low.
The man didn’t answer at first. His eyes flicked to me, then back to Leo, as if sizing up the situation. He was tall, with dark hair and an expression that could freeze water. There was something familiar about him, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
“This is a family matter, Leo,” the man finally said, his voice smooth but laced with venom. “And you’ve been keeping secrets. It’s time to face the consequences.”
I felt a chill crawl up my spine. I glanced at Leo, but he wasn’t looking at me. His gaze was locked on the stranger, his jaw clenched, his fists clenched at his sides.
“Leave. Now,” Leo ordered, his voice dangerously calm.
But the man didn’t move. Instead, he stepped further into the room, his eyes never leaving Leo’s. “You don’t get to dictate the rules anymore. Not when you’ve dragged her into this.” He nodded toward me, and my heart skipped a beat. “She doesn’t know what she’s gotten herself into, does she?”
I stood up from my seat, my pulse quickening. What did this man know? What was he talking about?
Leo’s face twisted with a mixture of anger and something darker—something I hadn’t seen before. “You don’t get to threaten her,” he said, his voice low and threatening. “This is between us.”
The man chuckled, the sound cold and devoid of humor. “Oh, it’s not just between you two anymore. The past is catching up with you, Leo. You can’t keep running from it.”

The Truth Unravels
I didn’t understand. I could feel the tension between them like an electric current, but I couldn’t make sense of the words. This wasn’t just some random confrontation. This was personal.
I stepped forward, my voice shaky. “Who are you?”
The man turned his gaze on me, his eyes cold and calculating. “You’ll learn soon enough. But the question is, how much of the truth do you want to hear?”
Leo took a step toward him, his posture rigid, but there was a flicker of hesitation in his eyes. It was subtle, but it was there. This man knew something about Leo—something Leo didn’t want me to know.
Before Leo could respond, the man continued, his voice low and mocking. “You think you’ve escaped your past, Leo. You think you’ve buried all the mistakes, the lies. But they’ve been waiting for you, lurking in the shadows.”
My heart was pounding in my chest as I turned to Leo, searching his face for answers. “Leo, what’s going on? What is he talking about?”
For the first time since I had met him, Leo’s expression faltered. His eyes were filled with a mix of guilt and something much darker, something I didn’t recognize. He opened his mouth to speak, but the man cut him off.
“You think you can protect her from this? You can’t even protect yourself.”
Leo’s entire body went still, like a coiled spring ready to snap. “Leave,” he spat, his voice filled with venom. “Before I make you.”
The man smiled, but it wasn’t a smile—it was a taunt. “You’re not in control anymore, Leo. You never were.”

A Dangerous Game
I didn’t know what to think. This man’s words were like a heavy weight pressing down on me. There was something between him and Leo, something that had been brewing for years, and now it was spilling out into the open.
And I was caught in the middle of it.
Leo was tense, his fists clenched, but there was something else there, something I couldn’t place. I had seen his dark side, but this felt different. The man wasn’t just a threat to me—he was a threat to everything Leo had built. To the carefully constructed walls he had put up around himself.
“You don’t get to control this anymore, Leo,” the man said, his voice soft and dangerous. “You made your bed. Now you’ll lie in it.”
Before Leo could respond, the man turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving the tension hanging in the air like a storm cloud waiting to break.
For a long moment, there was nothing but silence. Then, Leo let out a breath, his shoulders sagging slightly. He didn’t look at me as he spoke, his voice quieter now. “You don’t understand, Elara. There’s a part of me I’ve been trying to keep from you. But now…”
His words trailed off, and I felt the weight of them. I had known this wasn’t over. I had known that something darker was lurking beneath the surface, but I had no idea how deep it went.
Leo’s past was coming for him. And there was nothing he could do to stop it.
