Xavier slept soundly for 12 hours, and Ella imagined that he must not have slept at all in the last two days. Estefano still hadn't appeared, and at one point, the intercom rang. When she answered, she heard the voice of the man she feared the most in the world, who, unfortunately, was her father-in-law.
"I need to speak with my son."
"He's not home."
Ella chose to lie rather than reveal that Xavier was sleeping soundly because of the medication. This could be considered a sign of weakness by his father.
"Let me in. I'll wait for him inside; I can't stay outside."
Even though Xavier hadn't left instructions, Ella would never open the door for her father-in-law. Just thinking about it gave her the chills.
"I'm sorry, sir, but I'm not authorized to open the door for anyone."
She ended
