Apostrophe, Period, Full Stop
Ten days after her positive pregnancy test, Megan was treating herself to a pedicure while marking English essays on her iPad. A Vietnamese girl was painting Megan’s toenails orange to celebrate her optimistic mood.
Normally, Megan disliked marking papers, but since she’d found out she was pregnant, she would let nothing deflate her, not even the students’ chronic misuse of apostrophes. They sprinkled them over their essays like salt and pepper, hoping they’d land in the right spot. Being a grammar pedant made Megan a dinosaur but she and her father loved deploring the demise of the written language. But today not even the worst grammar crimes could dampen her spirit. Besides, once the baby came, she could give up this casual job.
