Chapter 12

Jasmine Tears streamed down Jasmine’s face as she stood frozen on the sidewalk, watching helplessly as the flames devoured her apartment. The fire raged, crackling hungrily as smoke billowed into the sky. Every few minutes, she wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand, but the tears wouldn’t stop. Her chest tightened, and her breath came in short, ragged bursts. Everything she owned—her books, her memories, her life—was inside, turning to ash. It was too much to process. She had called Reece as the fire raged on, her hands shaking so badly she could barely dial his number. Now she just waited, feeling numb and lost. The firefighters worked furiously to put out the flames, but the damage was done. Her home was gone. Jasmine hugged herself, feeling completely alone, even as people moved around her. But then, through the haze of her panic, she saw him. Reece. He appeared out of the shadows like a lifeline, striding toward her with his usual calm, commanding presence. The moment he reached her, he pulled her into his arms, wrapping her in a warm, protective embrace. The world around her faded as she buried her face against his chest, her body trembling as he held her tightly. “Jasmine,” Reece murmured, his voice soft yet steady. “Are you okay?” Jasmine sobbed quietly, her words tangled in her throat. She managed to nod against him, even though the tears kept falling. He didn’t push her to speak, just held her close, his hand gently stroking her back. After a few minutes, she finally found her voice, though it was broken and shaky. “It was an electric fire,” she whispered. “I—I don’t know how it happened. I just… I came home, and everything was burning.” Reece pulled back slightly, just enough to look into her eyes. His face was calm, his eyes filled with concern. “You’re safe. That’s all that matters right now.” Jasmine blinked through her tears, her body still shaking. “But… I’ve lost everything.” Before Reece could respond, one of the firefighters approached, giving them both a somber nod. He turned to Jasmine with a professional but gentle tone. “Miss Vaughn, we have the fire under control, but your apartment has sustained significant damage. Do you have anywhere to stay tonight?” Jasmine opened her mouth to respond, but no words came. She hadn’t even thought that far ahead. Where would she go? She had no family, and no close friends. Panic began to rise in her chest again, the weight of it threatening to overwhelm her. But before she could speak, Reece stepped forward, his tone firm but kind. “She’ll stay with me.” Jasmine looked up at him, her heart pounding for a new reason. Stay with him? She hadn’t considered that possibility. The thought of being in his space, so close to him, felt overwhelming. “Reece, I don’t want to impose—” “You’re not imposing,” Reece interrupted softly, his hand still resting protectively on her shoulder. “You’re coming with me. You shouldn’t be alone after something like this.” Jasmine hesitated, her mind swirling with uncertainty. But then she looked back at the smoldering remains of her apartment and realized she had no other options. She was exhausted, emotionally drained, and the idea of being somewhere safe, somewhere warm, sounded like the only thing that could help her right now. Finally, she nodded. “Okay. I’ll come with you.” Reece gave her a reassuring smile, then turned to the firefighter. “Thank you for your help,” he said, before guiding Jasmine gently toward his car. ❛ ━━━━━━・❪ 🎕 ❫ ・━━━━━━ ❜ The drive to Reece’s penthouse was quiet, Jasmine still processing everything that had happened. Her body was heavy with exhaustion, and she leaned back in the seat, staring out at the city lights as they passed by. The calm interior of Reece’s car felt like another world—far removed from the chaos of the fire. When they finally pulled up to his building, Jasmine’s breath caught in her throat. The entrance alone was grand—tall, sleek glass doors that reflected the lights of the city. She felt out of place, like she didn’t belong in a place this beautiful, but Reece’s hand on her arm kept her grounded. They entered through a private elevator, which whisked them up to the top floor. Jasmine was silent as the doors opened into Reece’s penthouse, her eyes widening as she took in the sight before her. The space was breathtaking. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered panoramic views of the city skyline, the lights twinkling like stars beneath them. The penthouse was sprawling, with generous terraces that wrapped around the building, leading to a rooftop swimming pool that shimmered in the moonlight. Inside, the furnishings were sleek and modern, but comfortable—a mix of luxury and warmth that felt effortlessly inviting. The space was vast but intimate, as if every inch had been designed with care. Jasmine could only stand there, her breath caught in her throat as she tried to take it all in. “This… this is your home?” Reece smiled, watching her reaction with a certain quiet satisfaction. “It is,” he said, his voice calm. “You’ll stay here for as long as you need.” He led her through the penthouse, showing her the different rooms—the private entrances, the oversized tubs, the rooftop pool that overlooked the entire city. Every corner of the space felt like a world of its own. Jasmine followed him in a daze, still trying to wrap her mind around how this was her life now, even if just for a little while. Finally, Reece stopped at a large guest bedroom with a view that made Jasmine’s breath catch again. The bed was enormous, and everything looked plush and inviting. “This is where you’ll sleep,” Reece said, gesturing toward the room. “I want you to be comfortable. If you need anything at all, let me know.” Jasmine turned to him, feeling a lump in her throat. The weight of everything that had happened—the fire, losing her home, and now standing in a place as grand as this—was almost too much. But Reece had been so kind, so generous, that it was impossible to feel anything but gratitude. “Thank you, Reece,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “I don’t even know how to say thank you for all of this.” Reece stepped closer, his gaze soft but intent. “You don’t need to thank me. I’m just glad I could help.” There was a moment of silence between them, the air heavy with something unspoken. But before anything more could be said, Jasmine took a deep breath and smiled softly. “I think I’ll take a shower and head to bed.” Reece nodded, stepping back to give her space. “Of course. Take your time. I’ll be just down the hall if you need anything.” With that, he left her alone, his footsteps quiet as he disappeared down the corridor. ❛ ━━━━━━・❪ 🎕 ❫ ・━━━━━━ ❜ Jasmine stood under the warm water of the shower, trying to let the events of the night wash away. The feeling of safety in Reece’s home was a welcome balm, but her mind kept returning to the fire. The sight of everything she owned going up in flames haunted her, but she reminded herself that she was lucky. She was safe. Reece had been there for her, and she wasn’t alone. After her shower, Jasmine slipped into a soft robe she found hanging in the closet and climbed into the enormous bed. The sheets were soft, and the mattress seemed to envelop her as she settled in. For the first time since the fire, she felt a sense of peace. As she lay there, staring out at the view of the city, she thought about Reece—about how he had come to her rescue without hesitation, about the way he made her feel both safe and vulnerable all at once. She didn’t know what to make of it, of him, but one thing was clear. She was falling deeper into his world, and there was no turning back.
