Chapter 5 Terri and Marie were both early risers. For Terri, it was habit born of a demanding father and long years in military service. For Marie, it was left over from being a mother with a large family and needing time to get them all out the door onto the school bus. It was nice, waking up around the same time, enjoying their coffee and toast together while the morning news played softly on the radio. They were mostly quiet in the morning, giving each other the time and space to wake up before burdening each other with conversation. Just having someone there, on the other side of the table, was nice. When breakfast was done and they’d both gotten dressed and washed up, Marie said, “I’m going to be gone most of the day.” “That sounds familiar,” Terri said. “What are you doing again?”
