Chapter 54
Joe's POV
The car ride would have been quiet, if only i could ignore Jane’s constant chattering and dramatic gestures. She clung to my arm like a possessive child, giggling every few seconds as she leaned in close to whisper sweet nothings I couldn’t care less about.
I answered her when necessary, nodding or giving a polite smile. But my gaze kept drifting. The rearview mirror had been tilted, clearly on purpose, so Lily who was seated in the front of the car following ours could see everything. Every time Jane kissed my cheek, or called me baby, or laid her head on my shoulder, I caught Lily’s eyes tighten just slightly. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t cry. She just stared straight ahead.
We arrived at the destination, a sprawling beach Jane had apparently bought out for the
