Chapter 15: Meeting the Family and a Hidden Plan
Adrian was nervous. For a man who had faced boardroom battles, multimillion-dollar deals, and even the shadow of danger, the prospect of meeting Elena’s family felt like an entirely new battlefield. He wanted to make a good impression—not just because they were Elena’s family, but because they were a part of her life, and by extension, his now too.
He adjusted his shirt for the third time that morning as he stood in front of Elena’s full-length mirror. “What if they don’t like me?” he asked, glancing at her over his shoulder.
Elena laughed from her place on the bed, where she was watching him with an amused smile. “Adrian, stop worrying. They’re going to love you. You’re charming, successful, and—most importantly—you make me happy.”
He gave her a skeptical look. “Charming isn’t going to help if your dad decides I’m not good enough for you.”
Elena stood, crossing the room to place a reassuring hand on his chest. “Relax. My dad can be a bit protective, but he’s not unreasonable. Just be yourself.”
Adrian let out a sigh, his nerves settling slightly as he looked into her eyes. “Okay, okay. But if this goes sideways, you’re never letting me meet your extended family.”
Elena laughed and kissed his cheek. “Deal. Now come on, let’s go.”
---
The drive to her parents’ house was filled with lighthearted banter, though Adrian’s fingers drummed nervously on the steering wheel. Elena tried her best to ease his nerves, but she could sense his unease. She couldn’t blame him—it was a big step, and she appreciated how much effort he was putting into making a good impression.
When they arrived, her parents were waiting at the door. Her mother was the first to greet them, pulling Elena into a warm hug before turning to Adrian.
“And this must be the famous Adrian,” her mother said with a bright smile, extending her hand. “I’ve heard so much about you.”
“All good things, I hope,” Adrian replied, shaking her hand firmly but politely.
Her father followed, his handshake firmer and his expression more guarded. “Adrian,” he said simply, his tone neither warm nor hostile. “Good to finally meet you.”
Adrian nodded, keeping his composure. “It’s an honor to meet you, sir. Elena talks about you all the time.”
Her father raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further. “Come on inside. Dinner’s almost ready.”
---
Dinner was a mix of casual conversation and thinly veiled interrogations from her father, who seemed determined to gauge Adrian’s intentions. Adrian handled it with grace, answering every question thoughtfully and never shying away from the more pointed ones.
“So, Adrian,” her father began as they moved to dessert, “what are your plans for the future? For you and Elena, I mean.”
The question hung in the air for a moment, and Adrian glanced at Elena, whose eyes widened slightly in surprise. She hadn’t expected her father to be so direct.
“Well,” Adrian said carefully, setting his fork down, “I can’t imagine my future without Elena. She’s the most important part of my life now. I’m committed to building a life together—one where she’s happy, supported, and loved.”
Her father studied him for a long moment, then gave a small nod. “Good answer.”
Elena let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding and smiled at Adrian, squeezing his hand under the table. He smiled back, relief evident in his eyes.
After dinner, her father seemed to warm up to Adrian, engaging him in a conversation about business and their shared interest in classic cars. By the time they left, Adrian felt like he had passed some sort of unspoken test.
In the car, he let out a long sigh of relief. “Well, that wasn’t as terrifying as I thought it would be.”
Elena laughed, leaning over to kiss his cheek. “You did great. My dad actually likes you, which is a big deal.”
Adrian smiled, his mind already racing with the next part of his plan. Meeting her family had been the first step. Now, it was time for the surprise.
---
Over the next few weeks, Adrian began planning a proposal. He wanted it to be perfect—something that reflected their love story while also surprising Elena in the best way possible. He enlisted Sophie’s help, knowing her input would be invaluable.
“You’re proposing?” Sophie exclaimed when he told her over coffee one morning. “Finally! I was starting to think you’d never do it.”
Adrian laughed. “I wanted to wait for the right moment. After everything we’ve been through, it feels like now is the time.”
“Well, you’re definitely not doing this halfway,” Sophie said, eyeing the sketches Adrian had made of the proposal setup. “A private rooftop dinner? With a string quartet? You’re pulling out all the stops.”
“Only the best for Elena,” Adrian said with a grin.
Sophie rolled her eyes playfully but smiled. “She’s going to love it. You’re doing great, Adrian.”
---
On the day of the proposal, Adrian made sure everything was perfect. The rooftop of one of the city’s most beautiful buildings had been transformed into a romantic oasis, complete with twinkling lights, soft music, and a stunning view of the skyline.
He had arranged for Elena to meet him there under the pretense of a business dinner. She arrived wearing a simple yet elegant dress, her eyes widening as she took in the breathtaking scene.
“Adrian,” she said softly, turning to him. “What is all this?”
He smiled, taking her hands in his. “It’s for you. For us.”
She looked at him, her expression a mix of surprise and emotion. “What’s going on?”
Adrian took a deep breath, then dropped to one knee, pulling out a small velvet box. Inside was a stunning diamond ring that sparkled in the soft light.
“Elena,” he began, his voice steady despite the pounding of his heart, “you’ve changed my life in ways I never thought possible. You’ve shown me what love really means, and I can’t imagine a future without you. Will you marry me?”
Tears welled up in Elena’s eyes as she nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. “Yes. A thousand times, yes.”
Adrian slipped the ring onto her finger and stood, pulling her into a kiss as the string quartet began to play softly in the background. It was a moment of pure joy, a moment that marked the beginning of their next chapter together.
As they stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, Elena whispered, “You planned all this?”
Adrian smiled. “Every detail. You’re worth it, Elena.”
And in that moment, surrounded by love and laughter, they knew they had found something truly special—a love that would last a lifetime.
