Chapter 12

Chaos and the Unspoken Truth The days following the dinner with Adrian’s family were filled with a blissful kind of calm, as if they were both still floating in the glow of the evening. Elena and Adrian spent quiet, stolen moments together, each one more intimate than the last. Their relationship had shifted, deepened, and while they were far from perfect, they were undeniably together—both in heart and in commitment. But even in the perfect moments, chaos had a way of creeping in. And for Elena, it was just around the corner. It began with a phone call. Elena was in her apartment one Thursday morning, enjoying a much-needed day off from work. She had spent the past few weeks balancing her hectic schedule with her budding relationship with Adrian, and she was finally able to take some time to herself. Her phone buzzed on the coffee table, and she picked it up absentmindedly. “Hello?” she answered, expecting it to be one of her friends or maybe even work-related. What she wasn’t expecting was the breathless, frantic voice on the other end. “Elena, it’s Sophie.” Elena’s heart skipped a beat. Adrian’s sister. She sounded frantic—scared, even. “What’s wrong?” Elena asked, immediately concerned. “I don’t know how to say this,” Sophie said, her voice trembling. “But something’s happened to Adrian. He’s... he’s missing.” The words hit Elena like a physical blow. Her mind raced, trying to process what Sophie had just said. Adrian missing? That didn’t make sense. He couldn’t be missing. “What do you mean, missing?” Elena asked, standing up, her hands shaking. “Where is he?” “I—I don’t know,” Sophie continued. “I tried calling him earlier, and he didn’t pick up. I went to his office, but it was empty. His car isn’t there. I’ve checked everywhere I can think of, and no one knows where he is.” A chill ran through Elena’s body, and her stomach clenched with panic. Adrian’s calm, composed demeanor had always made her feel safe, secure, like nothing could possibly go wrong. But now, the unsettling sense of uncertainty began to take root, and it gnawed at her insides. “I’m coming,” Elena said, her voice firm despite the panic that threatened to overwhelm her. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.” --- By the time Elena arrived at Adrian’s apartment, her mind was racing with all the possible scenarios—none of them good. She couldn’t shake the fear that something terrible had happened to him. As she stepped out of the elevator and into the hallway, Sophie was waiting for her, her face pale and full of worry. “I don’t know what to do,” Sophie whispered, her voice shaky. “Adrian never just... disappears like this. He’s always so reliable.” Elena nodded, trying to calm the anxiety that was building in her chest. “We need to figure this out. We’ll find him, Sophie. We will.” They quickly entered Adrian’s apartment, and Elena couldn’t help but notice how quiet everything felt—eerily quiet. The apartment looked untouched, as if Adrian had simply walked out and never returned. There were no signs of struggle, no indication that anything had gone wrong. But the longer she looked around, the more unsettled she became. As they searched through the apartment, trying to make sense of what had happened, Elena’s phone rang again. This time, it was from an unfamiliar number. Her heart pounded as she answered. “Hello?” “Elena, this is Detective Harris,” a gruff voice said on the other end. “I’m calling in regard to Adrian Montgomery. We’ve been trying to get in touch with him. There’s been an... incident.” The world seemed to tilt beneath Elena’s feet. An incident? What kind of incident? “Detective, what’s going on?” Elena’s voice cracked, but she fought to keep it steady. “Where is Adrian? What happened?” “I’m afraid it’s not something I can discuss over the phone,” the detective said. “But I need you to come down to the station immediately. We’ll explain everything when you get here.” Elena felt a sense of dread settle over her, like a heavy weight pressing on her chest. She glanced at Sophie, who was already looking at her with wide, fearful eyes. “Get dressed,” Elena said, her voice shaking with urgency. “We need to go to the station.” --- The ride to the police station was tense and silent. Elena’s mind was racing, and every second that passed without any clear answers only made her more anxious. When they arrived, Detective Harris was waiting for them in a small interrogation room. The look on his face was serious, but his demeanor was calm. Too calm. “Detective, please tell me what happened,” Elena said, her voice barely a whisper. The detective sat down across from her and Sophie. He exhaled slowly, meeting Elena’s gaze. “I’ll start from the beginning. Adrian has been involved in a situation that’s... complicated. I can’t give you all the details right now, but it involves his business dealings.” Elena’s breath caught in her throat. “Business dealings? What do you mean? What’s going on?” Harris hesitated for a moment, clearly choosing his words carefully. “We believe Adrian may have been targeted by someone. A rival, or someone with a personal vendetta. We’re still piecing everything together, but we have reason to believe he’s been taken.” A sickening jolt of fear shot through Elena. Taken? Her heart pounded in her chest. The idea of Adrian being in danger, of someone deliberately hurting him, was almost too much to bear. “What can we do?” Sophie asked, her voice trembling. “How do we find him?” “We’re already following leads,” Harris said, his eyes darkening. “But we need to move quickly. Whoever did this is smart. We’re not sure what their intentions are, but they’ve made it clear they want to send a message.” Elena’s mind spun. This was chaos. Nothing was making sense. One moment, everything had been perfect—Adrian’s family had accepted her, their relationship felt solid, and they were building something beautiful. Now, it felt like everything was slipping through her fingers. “I need to be involved,” Elena said, her voice firm, even though her insides were in turmoil. “I need to help. I’m not sitting back while you try to figure this out. I love him.” Detective Harris looked at her, studying her for a moment. “We could use all the help we can get,” he said, his voice softening just slightly. “But you need to stay calm. We don’t know exactly what we’re dealing with yet. There’s no telling who we’re up against.” But Elena wasn’t listening to him anymore. The only thing she could hear was the pounding of her heart, the desperate need to find Adrian, to get him back and to make sure he was safe. She had no idea who was behind this, or why they were targeting him, but she wouldn’t rest until she knew the truth. And with that, she made a silent vow to herself: whatever it took, she would find Adrian, no matter how much chaos lay ahead. --- The next few days were a blur of frantic phone calls, endless investigation leads, and long hours spent waiting for answers that seemed to never come. Elena felt herself losing a sense of reality. There was no time for fear, no room for anything but the desperate hope that Adrian would come back to her. But as the hours turned into days, she couldn’t shake the gnawing feeling that she was getting closer to the truth—a truth that would shake everything she thought she knew about Adrian, his business, and the world they had built together.
