Chapter 2: The Public Mask

The evening air was crisp, carrying the sharp chill of early autumn as the dark obsidian limousine pulled up to the grand entrance of the Grand Imperial Hotel. Outside, the flash of dozen cameras sliced through the dim twilight, casting violent bursts of white light against the gilded archways. Inside the vehicle, Marina adjusted the lace detailing along the neckline of her emerald velvet gown. The color complemented her skin and drew out the warm amber flecks in her hazel eyes, but her heart was beating in a slow, heavy rhythm against her ribs. Beside her sat Eyad. He was wearing a impeccably tailored black tuxedo that highlighted his broad shoulders and commanding stature. He hadn't spoken more than a handful of words during the twenty-minute drive from her family’s residence. His attention had been absorbed by his tablet, reviewing financial reports with a cold, detached focus. Yet, his presence filled the back of the car, heavy and suffocating in its absolute calm. As the car came to a complete stop, Eyad finally locked his screen and set the tablet aside. He turned his head, his dark, impenetrable eyes sweeping over her. For a split second, his gaze lingered on the curve of her neck and the faint tremble of her hands, though his face remained a masterclass in stoicism. "Are you ready?" he asked, his voice low and smooth. Marina took a slow, deep breath, clasping her hands tightly together in her lap to stop the slight tremor. "I am used to high-society galas, Mr. Eyad. But I am not accustomed to being the main exhibit." "Eyad," he corrected calmly, his eyes unblinking. "Tonight, we are not business partners in a boardroom. We are a couple deeply committed to a shared future. If you call me 'Mr. Eyad' in front of the press, the stock prices will reflect our distance before dessert is served." Marina met his gaze, drawing strength from her own pride. "Then I suggest you remember my name as well, Eyad." A faint, almost invisible trace of amusement flickered in the depth of his eyes before disappearing entirely behind his icy composure. "I rarely forget details that matter." The chauffeur opened the door, and the roar of the waiting crowd hit them like a physical wave—shouted questions, the heavy clicking of camera shutters, and the blinding flashes of light. Eyad stepped out first. Standing at his full height, he turned back toward the open door and extended his hand. Marina looked at his open palm. His fingers were long, strong, and unyielding. She reached out and placed her hand in his. The moment her skin touched his, a sudden rush of warmth shot up her arm. His grip was firm, reassuring yet possessive, instantly anchoring her amid the chaotic noise. She stepped out onto the red carpet. Eyad placed his other hand gently at the small of her back—a gesture that felt entirely natural to the watching reporters, yet sent a subtle jolt through Marina’s frame. His hand was warm through the thick fabric of her dress, a constant reminder of the physical proximity their new reality demanded. "Smile, Marina," Eyad murmured near her ear, his breath brushing against her skin, causing a faint shiver to run down her spine. "Give them what they came to see." Marina forced a polite, radiant smile onto her lips as they walked past the velvet ropes. "Mr. Vance! Is it true this is a joint venture merger between Vance Enterprises and Sterling Global?" one reporter shouted above the din. "Miss Sterling! How long have you two been dating secretly?" another called out. Eyad didn't stop, nor did he look directly at the cameras. He guided Marina through the security doors with practiced ease, shielding her slightly with his body until the heavy glass doors closed behind them, cutting off the noise of the street. The grand ballroom was illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers that dropped cascades of golden light over the hundreds of guests gathered below. The atmosphere was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, fine champagne, and political ambition. The city's elite—billionaires, politicians, and diplomats—were all present. "Ah, the man of the hour!" a loud, boisterous voice called out. An older man with graying hair and an expensive, tailored suit approached them, holding a glass of scotch. It was Marcus Sterling—Marina’s father. "Father," Marina said softly, stepping forward slightly. Marcus smiled, but his eyes were sharp, calculating the optics of the room. "You look stunning, my dear." He turned his attention to Eyad, extending his hand. "Eyad. The press outside is already going wild. The market response tomorrow morning will be unprecedented." Eyad shook Marcus’s hand with a brief, professional nod. "That was the goal, Marcus. The market thrives on stability and clear direction." "Indeed it does," Marcus agreed, taking a sip of his drink. "I was just speaking with the board members from the European branch. They are thoroughly impressed by the terms of the merger." Marina watched her father interact with Eyad. To her father, this evening was a grand tactical victory—a resurrection of his family’s failing financial empire. She felt a faint pang of sadness, knowing that her future had been traded for corporate leverage, but she quickly suppressed it. She had agreed to this role, and she would play it flawlessly. "If you will excuse me for a moment," Eyad said smoothly, turning to Marina. "I need to exchange a few words with Senator Hayes near the terrace. Will you be alright here?" Marina offered a gracious nod. "Of course. Go ahead." Eyad lingered for a second, his eyes searching hers as if checking her resolve. "I won't be long." As Eyad walked away, his tall frame cutting effortlessly through the crowd, Marina walked toward the side table to take a flute of sparkling water. She needed a moment to catch her breath away from the oppressive atmosphere of high society. "Well, well. If it isn't the new bride of the century." Marina turned to see Victoria Vance, Eyad’s younger cousin and a prominent socialite known for her sharp tongue and relentless gossip. Victoria was wearing an intricate crimson dress, her lips curved into a theatrical smile that held little warmth. "Victoria," Marina replied calmly, keeping her posture relaxed. "Good evening." "I must admit, Marina, everyone in our circle was shocked when the news broke this morning," Victoria said, taking a step closer and lowering her voice. "Eyad has turned down dozens of high-profile women over the years. Women from old money, foreign royalty... yet he suddenly agrees to a rapid engagement with you right when your father's firm hit trouble." The subtle insult was clear, wrapped in a blanket of polite conversation. Victoria was implying that Marina was nothing more than a charity case—a business transaction meant to save a falling house. Marina didn't flinch. She took a small sip of her water, holding Victoria’s gaze with absolute composure. "Eyad is a man who values long-term strategy over short-term spectacle, Victoria," Marina said smoothly, her tone soft yet razor-sharp. "He doesn't choose partners based on noise; he chooses based on substance and mutual value. Perhaps that is why he waited." Victoria’s smile stiffened slightly, her eyes narrowing as she realized Marina was not the fragile, defenseless girl she had assumed. Before Victoria could form a reply, a heavy hand rested lightly on Marina’s shoulder. Eyad had returned. He stood slightly behind Marina, his presence towering and protective. He hadn't heard the entire exchange, but he clearly sensed the tension in the air. "Is there a problem here, Victoria?" Eyad asked, his deep voice dropping an octave, carrying a subtle warning tone. Victoria immediately softened her posture, chuckling awkwardly. "Not at all, Eyad. Just offering my congratulations to your lovely fiancée." "Thank you," Eyad said curtly, not bothering to return the fake pleasantry. "If you'll excuse us, my grandfather is waiting to see us at the head table." Without waiting for Victoria's response, Eyad gently placed his hand on Marina's waist, guiding her away from the corner. His hand felt solid and warm against the small of her back, providing an invisible shield against the prying eyes of the room. As they walked through the crowd, Marina leaned slightly toward him, speaking in a soft murmur so only he could hear. "You came back quickly." "I saw Victoria heading your way," Eyad replied, his eyes focused ahead on the head table. "She enjoys testing people." "I can handle myself," Marina noted gently. Eyad glanced down at her, his dark eyes observing the calm dignity in her expression. "I noticed. Your response was well-executed." Coming from Eyad, that brief compliment was the equivalent of highest praise. Marina felt a strange, subtle warmth spread in her chest, though she kept her face composed. They reached the private lounge section reserved for the core Vance family. Sitting in a high-backed leather chair was Arthur Vance, Eyad’s grandfather and the patriarch of the empire. Though eighty years old, his eyes were sharp, bright, and full of authority. "Eyad. Marina," the old man greeted, his voice raspy yet strong. "Grandfather," Eyad acknowledged, taking a seat beside him while guiding Marina to sit next to him. Arthur Vance looked at Marina carefully, studying her face with the experience of a man who had read people for over six decades. "You look like your mother, Marina. She was a woman of great grace." "Thank you, Mr. Vance," Marina replied respectfully. "Call me Arthur, child," the old man commanded gently. He then turned his gaze to Eyad. "The announcement will take place in five minutes. Are the documents filed with the state registry?" "Everything was finalized at noon," Eyad reported, his posture rigid and professional. "The legal partnership is locked." Arthur nodded slowly, then looked back and forth between Eyad and Marina. "A marriage built on paper is an easy thing to design, Eyad. But remember... a house built on cold iron eventually grows freezing to live in." Eyad’s face remained a quiet mask. "We both understand the terms of this arrangement, Grandfather. We are aligned." Arthur chuckled softly, a dry sound. "We shall see." Moments later, the house lights dimmed slightly, and the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium at the front of the ballroom. The room fell into an attentive silence. "Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests," the announcer's voice echoed through the high-end sound system. "Tonight, we celebrate not only an unprecedented business coalition, but a union of two of our city's most distinguished families. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Eyad Vance and Miss Marina Sterling!" Applauses broke out across the room, thunderous and polite. Eyad stood up and extended his hand to Marina once more. She placed her fingers in his, standing up gracefully. Together, they walked up the low stairs to the main platform under the bright spotlight. Eyad took the microphone. He stood before the crowd of hundreds, oozing authority and unshakeable confidence. "Thank you all for being here tonight," Eyad began, his voice commanding absolute attention. "Tonight marks a new chapter for Vance Enterprises and Sterling Global. But beyond the corporate alignment, it marks a personal commitment between Marina and myself." He turned slightly to face her, looking down into her eyes. For a moment, under the blazing white light of the stage, the cold distance in his eyes seemed to soften, if only by a fraction. He reached out and gently slid a platinum ring featuring a flawless oval-cut diamond onto her ring finger. The metal was cool, but his fingers were warm as they brushed against hers. Marina looked down at the ring—a physical manifestation of the silk shackles that now bound her life to his. She looked back up at Eyad, her hazel eyes meeting his dark ones. He bent down slightly, bringing his lips close to her cheek in a gentle, formal kiss for the cameras. As his cheek touched hers, Marina felt her pulse quicken unexpectedly. His subtle scent of cedarwood and crisp rain enveloped her, making the loud applause of the room fade into distant background noise. "We are officially bound, Marina," Eyad whispered softly against her ear before pulling back. "Yes," Marina whispered back, keeping her composure intact as the cameras flashed frantically. "The contract has begun
