Cassandra Kane Jolting awake, Cassandra’s eyes darted around the dark room, pulse quickening. The sound came again, a soft scuffling noise followed by a faint creak. Her heart skipped a beat. Slowly, she slid out of bed, the cool night air making her skin prick as her senses sharpened. There was someone in her house. Her bare feet barely made a sound on the floor as she moved toward the closet, hands trembling just enough to betray her nerves. She slid the door open, feeling the familiar cold metal of the gun's handle against her palm as she unlocked the small safe.
