As Paul and I left The Den, my heart continued to hammer. Although the outside air was cool, it had little effect on quieting the storm building within me. Every step we made away from that location seemed to be a step into more peril. Joan posed a real threat, and her influence was beyond my wildest expectations. But now, not when I was so near to recovering my life, I could not turn back.
