The mental institute or nut house, as most people called it, was located in an isolated part of the city which was surrounded by woods and a lake but nothing much else. Previously, it had been a mining town, but the gold mines dried out and the town was quickly abandoned by residents and business men alike. Today, the majority of the people left behind in the town are old, poor or both, except for the employees of the nut house. Birdie was highly welcomed by the town’s people because she brought jobs and food. Nobody cared about what was going on in the nut house as long as the money kept coming in.
