Beneath the Surface

Elena's boots echoed against the concrete as she descended the staircase, her mind a storm of confusion and anger. The gala had turned into a disaster. She was supposed to remain unseen, just another shadow blending into the crowd. Instead, Kael Solrak had not only seen her but spoken to her in a way that rattled her very core. “Mate.” The word replayed in her mind like a haunting echo, each repetition stirring something deep and unsettling within her. She didn’t believe in fate, much less the idea that some mystical force had tethered her to a monster like him. And yet, the moment he’d touched her, the heat, the pull—it was undeniable. “Focus,” she muttered to herself, shaking off the thought as she exited the building into a darkened alleyway. The van was parked just around the corner. She moved quickly, keeping her head low and her senses sharp. The city may have been alive with lights and noise, but the shadows held dangers that only someone like her could fully understand. The van’s side door slid open before she reached it, revealing Jacob’s worried face. He gestured for her to hurry inside. “What the hell happened in there?” he demanded the moment the door slammed shut. “You weren’t supposed to make contact!” Elena collapsed onto the bench seat, her hands trembling slightly as she rubbed her temples. “It wasn’t intentional,” she said. “He saw me.” Jacob’s face darkened. “And?” “And…” She hesitated, the memory of Kael’s silver eyes and his low, commanding voice flashing through her mind. “He said something strange.” Jacob raised an eyebrow. “Strange how?” Elena took a deep breath, knowing how ridiculous it was going to sound. “He called me his mate.” For a moment, silence hung heavy in the van, broken only by the faint hum of the surveillance equipment. Then Jacob let out a sharp laugh, though there was no humor in it. “His mate?” he repeated, shaking his head. “That’s not possible. You’re human.” “Tell that to him,” Elena shot back. “He seemed pretty convinced.” Jacob’s expression shifted, the humor replaced by something far graver. He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a near whisper. “Elena, listen to me. If he believes you’re his mate, that changes everything.” She frowned. “What do you mean?” “I mean he won’t stop,” Jacob said, his tone grim. “Wolves don’t take these things lightly. A mate bond—it’s sacred to them. If he thinks you’re his, he’ll do whatever it takes to claim you.” Elena’s stomach twisted. She didn’t want to be claimed by anyone, least of all a wolf. “Then we need to stop him,” she said firmly. “Find a way to break the bond, or—” “Or what?” Jacob interrupted. “Kill him? Because that’s the only way this ends if he doesn’t let you go.” The weight of his words hit her like a punch to the gut. She didn’t respond, her mind racing with possibilities and none of them leading to a good outcome. Meanwhile, Back at Solrak Industries Kael stood in his private office on the top floor of the Solrak Industries tower, his hands braced against the edge of his desk as he stared out over the city. The lights of Aurion glittered below, but his thoughts were far from the mundane concerns of humans. She was human. The realization gnawed at him like a thorn buried deep in his skin. The Moon Goddess had chosen a human as his mate—a fragile, mortal creature who was part of the very species that hunted his kind. “Alpha,” a low voice broke through his thoughts. Kael turned to see Marcus, his Beta, standing in the doorway. The man’s expression was tight, his unease clear. “What is it?” Kael asked, his tone sharper than he intended. Marcus hesitated before speaking. “There’s been movement near the southern border. Rogues, possibly. But that’s not all.” Kael straightened, his silver eyes narrowing. “Go on.” “Reports of human surveillance teams in the area,” Marcus said. “It seems they’ve been watching us more closely than we thought.” Kael’s jaw tightened. He’d known the humans wouldn’t stay blind forever, but the idea that they were actively monitoring his pack—and possibly planning an attack—sent a surge of anger coursing through him. “Strengthen the patrols,” he ordered. “I want updates every hour.” Marcus nodded but didn’t leave. Instead, he hesitated, glancing toward the desk where Kael’s phone sat. “And the human from the gala? What do you plan to do about her?” Kael’s gaze darkened. “She’s mine.” Marcus stiffened but said nothing. He knew better than to question his Alpha, even when the situation was… unusual. The bond was sacred, unbreakable, and if Kael had claimed the human as his mate, there was little anyone could do to change it. But that didn’t mean it would be easy. Kael turned back to the window, his hands curling into fists at his sides. The bond was a gift—or a curse, depending on how one looked at it. And yet, he couldn’t deny the pull he felt toward her, the instinctual need to protect, to claim. It was maddening. “She doesn’t trust me,” he said quietly, almost to himself. “She’s human,” Marcus replied. “Trust will take time.” Kael’s lips curved into a humorless smile. “Time is a luxury we don’t have.” Back at the Van Jacob was typing furiously on the laptop, pulling up surveillance footage and encrypted files as Elena paced the length of the van. Her nerves were frayed, and the tension in the air was suffocating. “We need to dig deeper,” she said finally, stopping to glare at Jacob. “If he’s the Alpha, there has to be something—some weakness we can use.” Jacob glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Elena.” “I don’t have a choice,” she snapped. “If he thinks I’m his mate, he’s not going to stop. And if we don’t act, he’ll come after me—and who knows how many others.” Jacob sighed but didn’t argue. He tapped a few keys, pulling up a map of the city. “Fine. But if we’re doing this, we’re doing it my way. No heroics, no going rogue.” Elena didn’t respond. She was already thinking three steps ahead. Kael Solrak might be a predator, but she wasn’t prey. Not yet.
