Shadows in the Dark

Elena’s breath came in shallow gasps as she slipped through the maze-like alleys leading away from the parking garage. The chill of the night air bit into her skin, but she barely noticed. Her mind was racing, replaying Kael’s last words. “Get out of here.” His tone had been more than commanding—it had been urgent, almost… protective. But why? What was he so concerned about? And who—or what—had been approaching? Her instincts screamed at her to keep running, but curiosity clawed at her resolve. She needed answers, and Kael Solrak was the key to all of them. Still, facing him again so soon felt like stepping into a lion’s den. One false move, and she could lose more than just her pride. She rounded a corner and ducked into an abandoned shopfront, its windows shattered and its interior shrouded in darkness. For a moment, she let herself breathe, leaning against the cracked wall and closing her eyes. “Think, Elena,” she muttered to herself. “What’s his angle? Why warn me instead of letting me get caught?” Her earpiece crackled to life, startling her. “Elena, where the hell are you?” Jacob’s voice was sharp, tinged with frustration. She tapped the device. “I’m out of the garage. No thanks to you.” “You weren’t supposed to engage,” he snapped. “You were supposed to observe and report. What part of that didn’t you understand?” “I didn’t exactly have a choice,” she shot back. “Solrak found me.” There was a pause, and when Jacob spoke again, his tone was more measured. “Did he hurt you?” “No,” she admitted, though she wasn’t sure if that made the situation better or worse. “But something’s going on down there. He told me to leave, like he was trying to protect me.” Jacob was silent for a moment. “That doesn’t make sense. Why would he—” “Exactly,” Elena interrupted. “Something isn’t adding up. He knows I’m human, and yet he’s acting like… like—” “Like he’s bonded to you,” Jacob finished grimly. Elena’s stomach churned. She hated hearing it out loud, hated the weight those words carried. “I need to go back,” she said after a beat. “Find out what’s really happening.” “Absolutely not,” Jacob barked. “You’ve already compromised your position. Get to the extraction point. That’s an order.” Elena clenched her fists. She hated taking orders, especially when they didn’t make sense. But she also knew Jacob was right. She couldn’t afford to make another reckless move—not tonight. “Fine,” she muttered. “But this isn’t over.” Meanwhile, Back at the Garage Kael’s sharp eyes scanned the darkened rows of cars as the intruders emerged. There were three of them, their movements slow and deliberate, their faces obscured by the shadows. But Kael didn’t need to see their faces to know what they were. Rogues. Their scent hit him like a wave—sharp, metallic, and unmistakably tainted. These weren’t ordinary wolves. They were outcasts, wolves who had broken away from the packs and lived on the fringes of society, driven by primal instincts and an insatiable hunger for power. “Solrak,” one of them growled, stepping forward. He was taller than the others, his frame bulky and his posture aggressive. “You’ve been a thorn in our side for too long.” Kael’s lips curled into a smirk, though his silver eyes burned with cold fury. “Funny, I was about to say the same thing about you.” The rogue snarled, baring his teeth. “You think you can protect your little empire forever? The world is changing, Alpha. Humans are starting to see us for what we are. It’s only a matter of time before they wipe us out.” Kael took a step forward, his presence radiating power. “Humans aren’t the threat,” he said coolly. “You are. And I don’t take kindly to threats in my territory.” The rogue lunged, but Kael was faster. In a blur of movement, he sidestepped the attack, his hand shooting out to grab the rogue by the throat. With a growl, he slammed him against a nearby car, the force of the impact denting the metal. “You made a mistake coming here,” Kael said, his voice low and dangerous. “And I’m going to make sure you don’t live to regret it.” The other two rogues hesitated, clearly debating whether to intervene. But before they could make a move, Kael’s Beta, Marcus, appeared from the shadows, flanked by two other pack members. “Alpha,” Marcus said, his tone steady but urgent. “We’ve secured the perimeter. What are your orders?” Kael didn’t take his eyes off the rogue struggling in his grasp. “Send a message,” he said coldly. “Let every rogue in Aurion City know what happens when they cross me.” Marcus nodded, and the other pack members moved to apprehend the remaining rogues. Kael released his hold, letting the rogue crumple to the ground, gasping for air. “You’re lucky I have more important things to deal with tonight,” Kael said, his voice dripping with disdain. “But if I see you again, I won’t be so merciful.” The rogue scrambled to his feet, his eyes flashing with hatred as he and his companions were dragged away. Kael watched them go, his mind already shifting back to more pressing matters. Elena. At the Extraction Point Elena sat in the back of the van, her arms crossed as Jacob navigated the dark streets of Aurion City. The van’s interior was dimly lit, the hum of the engine the only sound as they headed back to the safehouse. “You did the right thing leaving,” Jacob said after a while, glancing at her in the rearview mirror. “Did I?” she muttered, her eyes fixed on the city lights streaking past the window. “Because it sure doesn’t feel like it.” Jacob sighed. “You’re too close to this, Elena. Solrak’s playing mind games, and you’re letting him get to you.” “Maybe,” she said, though the doubt in her voice betrayed her uncertainty. “But what if he’s not? What if there’s more to this than we think?” Jacob didn’t respond, and the silence between them was heavy. Elena leaned her head back against the seat, closing her eyes as exhaustion began to creep in. But even as sleep threatened to claim her, one thought lingered in the back of her mind. Kael Solrak wasn’t just dangerous. He was a mystery. And if she wanted to survive this, she needed to figure out what he was hiding—before it was too late.
