"They're coming?" Now that right there, was an answer that left me with more questions.
"Who's coming?" I looked at her intensely, patiently waiting for her response.
"I'll tell you on the way but for now you need to start packing up. You need to find a new place to live. If I was able to find here then they will be able to find it too."
"You keep saying they, who are they" in all honesty at this point I was starting to get pissed cause for Neptune's sake, could she just stop speaking in codes?
"I'll tell you while we're packing." And so we went back to my room. I had very few things; not that I didn't want more but I didn't see the use for more.
I pulled open my wardrobe and began bringing out the clothes. "So... who are 'they'" I finally asked that one question.
Aunt Louise kept quiet, and I didn't press for an answer either. I felt like what she wanted to say was huge and a bit difficult for her.
It didn't take long for all my belongings to get packed up, and once we were done Aunt Louise gestured for me to sit on the bed. It seemed like she was finally ready to talk about that which must not be talked about. For someone like me who can be said to be extremely fearless, I won't deny I was quite anxious about what she was about to say and... she started.
"Leon. You've always asked who your father was since you were little."
Yup, that I definitely did. It was one of the questions I asked a lot of times and never really got a satisfactory answer.
"Uh... yeah, he's just some horny club frequent who took advantage of my mum when she was high. That aside, where is mum?" The second question was what I really wanted to know. My mum was well... very unique. She had this thing against technology so she didn't have a phone or anything and the only way I could get to her was through Aunt Louise.
"I'm getting there. Leon... your father is dead" I wish I could see the facial expression on my face, cause I wonder why a man that I've never met since I was born; his death would be the reason for all this stress.
"And...?" I was seriously waiting for the second big event, preferably where my mother was. I've really missed her.
"You don't get it. He wasn't some horny club frequent or whatever we told you when you were seven years old." Now that... was starting to make sense, and honestly I felt dumb for not thinking in that direction, cause if he was such a useless specimen, we wouldn't even be talking about him.
"Leon, your mother's maiden name is Stacy Sinclair." Alright, ladies and gentlemen I was genuinely lost at this point cause... maiden name? That's something only married people have, but I decided to play dumb for a while.
"Sinclair? Not Castellan?" I asked while deep down I was reciting all the Hindu mantras I had heard during my time in India.
"Yes... Sinclair, your mother got married to your father and two months later she got pregnant. And that is how you were born." Well... I definitely didn't know how to feel about this especially considering that I had been believing a lie my whole life. "So... what else don't I know."
"Your father... Zane Castellan-" I had to cut her off there because... "ZANE CASTELLAN!! Like THE ZANE CASTELLAN?!" Well... that was a pretty valid reaction if you knew who the Castellans were.
Castellan wasn't a common last name, but it wasn't uncommon either, but when put together with the first name Zane... the name carries a terrifying level of weight.
The Castellan family of Riverbend County.
The kind of family that everyone knows is in the dark but they can't be put under custody by the government. The Castellans were a mafia household with over a five-decade-long history and suddenly I'm his child.
"Yes... that Zane Castellan. The patriarch of the Castellan family. He's dead." I didn't know whether to be happy or sad. I mean, my dad is dead and I won't say I really knew him and I definitely didn't see him as my father. And on the other hand, the government has one major obstacle removed for them. "So... my father was a mafia boss... and what does that have to do with me again?" Cause that was a question and the answer to that question was going to determine a lot of things.
"When your mother was pregnant, she had an attempt made on her life. She survived it, but she had a miscarriage. Or so we made everyone think. The mafia has never been a safe place to raise a child. So your mother went into hiding, I assisted her and then she gave birth to you. We wanted to keep you far away from the mafia life but after your father died, a lot of things came to light. Including things that he had helped us with while we were in hiding that he kept hidden with his ability as the patriarch." And now I suddenly had an idea of the issue. So... apparently.
"The people that made an attempt on your mother's life are equally members of the Castellan family. They didn't want your father to have an heir. Now that he's dead the position of patriarch is meant to go to his brother who is from a different faction in the Castellan family"
"Faction? Aren't they one family?" Cause dayum, no one told me that mafias had divisions and division heads.
"The Castellan family is in a constant state of internal fracture. So now they've found out about the child, your mum is... somewhere, they attacked her but she was able to escape, she's somewhere... much safer now and she said that I should help you hide" Something was off about her voice and I should have asked but I chose not to, which now I think back to it was my mistake number one. "Then take me to where she is then?"
"I'm sorry but I can't. I've found a place for you in the middle of the county, there are a lot of people and finding you, if you're discreet, will be very difficult. Now pack up, let's leave" I nodded and stood up, carrying the bag as we headed for the living room.
Ding!
Dong!
"Well... I'd be damned." I walked to the door and looked through the peephole and why was I surprised that there was no one there. And then I heard it.
Clink!
Clack!
It was a ducking MW11 with a flipping monolithic suppressor and I wish I didn't know because only one thing was in my mind- they had come, and I wasn't ready.
"GET DOWN!!"
