The Elevator Gamble

809 Words
Danny and Ro walked hurriedly down the hall and into the lift, arguing fervently about who was gonna interview Emeric and who was going to a nearby drugstore to buy Evelyn's necessities. Ro insisted that Danny does the interview and not run personal errands for her and her sister. But Danny wouldn't budge. "I'll go buy your sister's medicine for you." Danny volunteered whole-heartedly. "Just give me the money. An extra too. I am gonna buy myself a treat from all the hustle that your beauty sleep caused us." What's a beauty sleep? Never mind that. "You're not following orders," she snapped back. Glancing at her watch, she stood by as other employees filled inside the small, air-tight elevator. Every minute passing by is a minute wasted. On the contrary, Danny seemed cheerful and laid back today. He even managed to hum a little. "Don't worry, Ro. Everything will be fine." Right as if. She's missed her daily routine and she's off her schedule today. She didn't know how her sister got through last night without her medicine and she is totally unprepared for today's interview. All the more reason to make her feel frantic and irritated. Why today of all days? She hissed at Danny and spoke in a hushed voice, "You can handle it. All you have to do is ask the questions I prepared in this paper." Danny surveyed her last-minute scribbled outline which was very hard to decipher. He could very much tell that Ro wasn't well-organized and mentally ready today. He wanted to keep things light, so he decided to joke around. "Really, Ro? You call this an interview." Danny mocked her work. "I can't tell if it's a doodle or a new calligraphy style." "Oh come on." She heaved a heavy sigh, hoping that Danny would just take the paper. "My handwriting is not that bad." "No can do, Missy." He said with finality. "You can be so annoying sometimes, you know that?" "In fact, I do." The elevator stopped and a few more people entered, causing all of the passengers to move back. A man in his fifties stepped on her foot and she moaned in pain. These heels are already killing me. Could this day get any worse? Danny noticed that Ro was in a position where she would likely get stepped on, so he switched places with her. Now, she was at the corner while he stood barely in front of her, blocking her path to the elevator doors. "You are the leader and you know SuperFormula better than anyone else in the team. It is right that you make the verdict about hiring him or not." Danny subtly glanced at the number displayed on the monitor just right above the elevator door. It read six. Just two more floors left before one of them gets off. And Danny will make sure it's not him. "I look horrible." Ro gritted her teeth in frustration. Rosalyn Gellamore didn't usually care about how she looked like and what dress she wore at work, but today's a special day since she will be representing her team when she meets Emeric Thorne. She didn't want to leave a bad impression on what could be a potential new researcher at CrystalSynth Corporation. Danny, on the other hand, was a diva and a fashionista who dressed up extravagantly like there was a party every day. At times, he wears gloves with matching hats and glitter on his cheeks which he'll have to remove later on before entering the laboratory. Not to mention his body is fit. His shoulders are broad, his chest is hard and if his polo is wet, one would see it's filled with six sexy packs, his butt is firm, and one could see the size of his calves pressing against his pants. Danny snorted with muffled laughter. "That's fine. You still have at least three minutes before he gets there." "What if he's already there?" Ro tried pushing Danny forward as the elevator made its third to the last stop. Gosh! He's so heavy. Since when did he work out and get so big? Danny pouted as he struggled to come up with a rebuttal. "Then tell him he's too early." Ro crossed her arms over her chest. "Not funny." Danny grinned when the elevator came to a halt. A brilliant idea had just formed in his head. "Oh, it won't get any funnier than this, sis." He grabbed both of her shoulders and threw her into the hallway as soon as the doors opened and before she could hop back in again. He immediately pressed the 'close' button. He mouthed sorry through the gap while Ro held up her middle finger with a scornful stare. The elevator disappeared to the lower floors and Ro knew there was no turning back now.
