Chapter 3 I Have a Husband

1367 Words
Julia Wilde sat in the living room, waiting for the arrival of Simon Kent. However, instead of Simon Kent, Albert Wilde's mother-in-law Flora Owen unexpectedly appeared. Perhaps due to Julia Wilde's marriage being mentioned by her sister-in-law Janice Malthu, Flora Owen's face turned dark, and with a hint of sarcasm, she said, "Young girls nowadays are really something, unlike our time when marriages were decided by the elders." Julia Wilde smiled faintly and chose not to argue with her. Albert Wilde looked somewhat guilty towards his sister but also chose not to confront his mother-in-law. Flora Owen's words seemed to fall on deaf ears as she couldn't help but complain about her daughter to Albert Wilde, "You are really clueless! Rupert is willing to give an eight thousand eight hundred dowry, and if Julia Wilde accepts it, wouldn't it be beneficial for the family? Your brother is also waiting for money to get married!" Janice Malthu, pregnant, remained silent, but Julia Wilde couldn't stand it any longer. She lifted her head, smiled, and retorted, "Auntie, there is no reason for your son to have his marriage subsidized by the Wen family. My brother works hard for his money, and just like you need to support your son, my brother also needs to be supported." Janice Malthu was taken aback by her words, glanced at Albert Wilde's expression, and quickly came back to her senses. She was about to give birth, and regardless of whether Albert Wilde had money or not, raising a child would incur expenses. Flora Owen's expression soured, about to say something, when the doorbell rang. Julia Wilde opened the door to find Simon Kent standing there. She familiarly linked her arm with him, introducing, "Uncle, Aunt, this is my husband, Simon Kent." Her actions were too natural, causing Simon Kent to pause slightly. Behind his glasses, a hint of surprise flashed in his eyes as he extended his hand and looked at Albert Wilde, "Hello, big brother, I'm Simon Kent. Julia and I just got married yesterday." Flora Owen and Janice Malthu stared at the handsome and refined man in front of them, somewhat dumbfounded. Albert Wilde glanced at him a few times, then hurriedly invited him to sit down, "So you're Simon. Please have a seat. You're here to pick up Julia, right?" Simon Kent graciously nodded, but Flora Owen, acting out of character, asked eagerly, "What do you do for a living? Even though you and Julia have gotten married, have you discussed the wedding and dowry? Julia is, after all, a girl, and it's normal for her not to understand some things. Why don't we clarify everything today? It's not right for her to get married without a proper dowry, don't you think so?" Albert Wilde frowned, but upon looking at Julia, he hesitated. Would the Kent family look down on Julia if they didn't accept the dowry? He was momentarily indecisive. Julia Wilde sat beside Simon Kent, placing the prepared tea in front of him and smiling as she looked at Flora Owen, "Auntie, Simon is an Uber driver with not much money. I value his honesty and progressiveness. Whether before or after marriage, it's just the two of us living our lives together. Let's forget about dowries and focus on living well together, that's what matters." Flora Owen glanced at Simon Kent and couldn't help but curl her lips. Honest? Was this young girl, Julia Wilde, perhaps drawn to his looks? Simon Kent hadn't paid much attention to the dowry matter. Even though the Kent family had certain expectations when it came to marrying into their family, he wasn't going to back down. Just as he was about to speak, he felt a light touch around his waist. Following the direction of the initiator's hand, he saw Julia Wilde smiling gently, as if to say, "For the sake of this face, I can let go of everything." After a family gathering filled with jests and subtle atmospheres, Simon Kent couldn't help but reveal a mischievous smile. He deliberately lifted those deep eyes, pretending to be shy about his finances, and joked, "Honestly, my wallet is temporarily pitifully slim, so the matter of the dowry, well, might have to trouble Julia a bit. But hey, rest assured, we'll build our sweet little nest hand in hand..." His voice was deep and magnetic, as if it could melt steel, yet it made Flora Owen involuntarily curl her lip, silently scoffing, almost bursting into laughter. And Julia Wilde assumed a posture that placed romance above all else, while Albert Wilde felt reluctant, eventually he did not pursue the matter further. After a brief stay, Julia took Simon's hand, ready to say goodbye to this awkward and humorous situation. Flora Owen couldn't hold back, sarcastically criticizing, "The young people these days, eschewing a dowry of eighty-eight thousand, prefer a handsome Uber driver, the days to come, heh, will certainly be entertaining." Julia Wilde acted as if she heard none of it, gracefully bidding farewell to her brother Albert: "Brother, I'm leaving, remember to take good care of yourself and sister-in-law." Albert Wilde felt a warm current in his heart, his eyes slightly reddened, and he nodded gently. Simon Kent casually took the luggage from Julia Wilde's hands, she paused in surprise, then a shallow smile bloomed on her face. "Having such a considerate husband doesn't seem too bad, does it?" she thought to herself. After getting into the car, Julia remembered the small gestures from earlier and felt a bit uneasy. She whispered, "Mr. Kent, my family is actually not too bad, it's just my brother's in-laws... I know you wanted to stand up for me, but being petty, I didn't want them to be jealous about the dowry, so..." Her voice conveyed a hint of helplessness, after all, it was those little family issues. Simon Kent, who had long been familiar with the business world and had seen all types of characters, naturally took someone like Flora Owen in stride. From the few words of Albert Wilde, he had understood a great deal, finding it quite novel. He remembered the first time they met in the hospital, she seemed gentle yet decisive, clear-cut in dealing with matters, with a clear sense of love and hate. As he met her clear, water-like eyes, Simon Kent lied without a change in expression: "You're overthinking it, I really can't afford the dowry right now." Julia Wilde was momentarily stunned, then reassured with a smile, "It's okay, our wedding is already out of the ordinary, we'll earn the money eventually." Simon Kent didn't reply, just quietly drove towards their newly purchased "marital home." Usually, he would stay in a villa or a hotel, but to avoid arousing Julia's suspicion, he had purposely chosen a recently renovated apartment. Although it was less than ninety square meters, the three-bedroom, one-living-room layout had quite good lighting, but because of the new renovation, it looked a bit bare with only the basic furniture. After sending Julia home, Simon Kent found an excuse to take a job and hurried off to a company meeting. Julia surveyed their new home, placing her luggage in the spare bedroom. After cleaning up, she called Simon: "Mr. Kent, we're about to start living together, I was thinking of decorating the house a bit, what do you think?" Simon Kent paused, flipping through a report, and asked in a measured tone, "What kind of decoration do you have in mind?" Julia seemed to have just finished cleaning, her breath slightly uneven: "The house still lacks many necessities, it feels a bit empty. If you don't mind, I'd like to buy some things to fill it up..." Simon Kent felt a sudden emotion, realizing that he and Julia had truly formed a home. Until Julia proposed a divorce, he was her husband, a member of this less than ninety-square-meter home... This was a new sensation, and Simon Kent unexpectedly found that he did not dislike it. "Go ahead and decorate as you like, I have no objections." Julia suddenly felt that Simon Kent was actually quite nice, at least he respected her wishes in these small matters.
