"Did I not ask you to leave?" Vermin stood close to the giant wardrobe. Slowly, I opened the door, slightly then widely. I had heard everything that they said. Vermin used to have feelings for me? But now he was desperate to get rid of me? That didn't make sense. Now that I thought about it, I realized that he had kept my identity secret for a reason. Maybe he still had feelings afterall and he didn't want me to get hurt.
"You have to stop all these games, Yeneffer. I will not be there to save you another time." He said, edging closer. "I have kept your identity a secret long enough. There is nothing I can do if you keep announcing yourself with your stupid plans. I don't know what you are planning, but I know it will not work", he said.
I believed it more when he said that. He was surely the one who was watching me during the night. The wolf with the red eyes.
If my plans would not work, then why would he not help? I walked towards him. "You have to let me go, Vermino. I promise..."
"Do not develop stupid thoughts in your head." He said, cutting me in the middle of my statement. "You are not even my type. I detest weaklings."
I stood fazed and in shock. But something told me he was only lying. He was only pretending. "So why do you spy on me at night? Why do you keep watch over me?"
"You are nothing to me", he continued, smirking. "Just a prisoner and a slave. And I am only keeping you here for the mean time. After I have captured your pathetic father, I will give you his head. Or should I give it to Lysandra instead. She has a collection of things like that, skulls and bones of fallen enemies. She would be really happy."
I boiled in rage. Why did I ever expect good from him? Why did I think he was anything better than what he had clearly portrayed himself to be? He was clearly evil and disdainful, and he was my worst enemy. He was determined to hurt me and my family, and I was never going to allow that. I reached to feel the key again. It was still there where I kept it, safe and secure. He couldn't even sense its presence on me. Soon I would escape this forsaken island and then I would make sure Vermin paid for everything he had done.
"Get out of here!" He commanded brutely. "Before I change my mind and decide to feed you to Derek Marble and his fiersome daughter, they would love to tear you apart."
Without another word, I stormed away from his presence. As soon as I reached the door, I heard Lysandra's voice approach from behind. She was dressed like a queen and they embraced in deep kisses when she got to him. He tapped her butt and she reached her fingers into his shirt. My blood boiled more in burning fury as they cuddled wildly. I stepped out of that building. Their love would turn to ashes in their mouth, I vowed. They should just wait till I get my revenge.
Eliora was waiting outside when I found her.
"I thought they had you!" She could barely hold her screams when she saw me. The look of joy fell on her face, replacing the despair and guilt which was there just a moment ago. She held me tight, and the anger I felt died down because of her.
"Do you have it?"
I nodded in the positive. Eliora beamed with smiles again. She even hugged me. I never knew she could be so friendly. The glitter in her eyes was so bright, as if she had suddenly fallen in love.
"Quick. We have to get out of here." She said.
When we arrived back in the room, Lily was standing idly. She had some notes in her hand and she looked stunned with suprise as she stared into those papers.
"So you were going to run away without telling me..." She looked betrayed, hurt and demoralised. We did not tell her, she found this out on her own.
This was my fault. I should have told her. "Lily..."
"I thought you were my sister, how could you plan to leave me alone..." I saw the hurt in her eyes. She felt betrayed, the same way I felt against Vermin. How could I ever make up for this disappointment?
"I am sorry, Lily. I was going to tell you..."
"Cut it, girl. We were never gonna tell her." Eliora walked away to get a drink. She was not bothered in the least bit. To her, Lily was a weakling, a burden, the same thing that Vermin said about me. To me, Lily was a sister, a friend. It was not right for me to abandon her.
"I swear, Lily. I was going to let you know when it is time. I was not going to abandon you here." I took her shoulders and swore it to her. The doubt in her eyes shifted, but not the fear.
"Please don't do it." She begged. "It is too dangerous."
Eliora slammed the ground with her cup. "And that's exactly why she should never have known." She cussed. "She prefers s*****y to freedom."
"What if they catch us?" She expressed her fears. "You know how wicked the Sunfyres are. You saw what they did to our pack. To the princess, your father and your sister. My entire family. I don't want to end up like them."
She was truly terrified, but I was right there to assure her.
"Do not worry, Lily", I said. "I promise you that we will be fine. There is nothing they can do to us. Tonight we will be gone before they even know it."
She tried to say another word, but it stopped at her throat as I wrapped my hands around her. Lily was just like my sister. I would do anything to protect her. I could not protect Diana against Vermin and his animals, but I must protect Lily from now on.
"Well girls," Eliora said as evening came. "Don't you think it is time to get some rest. We will need it for the night."
We all agreed, and each girl made for their bed of grasses. From tomorrow we would be free of Sunfyre chains and we will no longer be surrounded by water. I would be able to search for father and sister. I would be able to take my revenge on Vermin and his father and his girlfriend and her father, and everyone who belonged to their evil pack.
As my eyes returned to sleep, I stared into the glowy forest, wary of the red eyes somewhere in the dark, spying on me.
