“It worked” I say surprised as I run my fingers through my hair to see that instead of the horrible blue hair I had my own back. There I stood, finally who I was really. Just a girl, who I was twenty three years ago and now again.
“Your her?” The sailor ask as I sigh, “Your the first siren, the one who marked me” he says as suddenly the memory comes back like a wave, slowly by so abruptly.
As suddenly my words get stuck in my throat and I feel like I’ve seen a ghost.
“I was never supposed to, I’m so sorry” I say as suddenly he’s nudged silent. “I put you in so much danger that night, you could never even guess” I admit as I shake my head. “You think I’d learn from the mistakes imprinted on me” I whisper as I wish I could take it back
Ten Years Ago
I was new, different. I had grown the sirens name but never once added to the horrors and tragedies that sank within the ocean. I never tried to sing for those ten years and everyday I locked my song within the vessel called my body, it’s force became more and more stronger, until I had no other choice. I knew what power my voice held, the power of destruction itself, but I had no choice but to let it rain that day and it’s prey to be held captive into a bottomless pit that I knew as my home and they, purgatory.
As my wicked song started to crawl it’s way out I saw a ship emerging from the fog and decided I had to let terror rain, the night I let my song lose without any idea of guilt.
“Come to me my dearest men, hear through my cries and the moonlight under the shores of a home. Come to me, into my graces and I’ll show you the mercy of the shores-“
I sing as the men start dropping like flies one by one but for a minute I make eye contact with one. No sailor but a child, listening to my song with such graces, hanging onto every note as if it was a lullaby. As suddenly I notice that he becomes closer to the edge and I stop, the sirens first and only survivor. And as he stood there, newly knocked out the of his trance and I dive back into to ocean and swam the seas home.
“I said I’d never do it, and look what I did!” I say angrily as I stand in my bedroom. “HOW COULD I??” I question as I throw my vanity off of its legs and onto the floor as it breaks in half.
“You spared him, no siren has shown that much control” Allah says trying to comfort me but only I know the awful truth about the deed I just committed.
“No Allah, what I did was worse than death. What I did will scar him forever” I say as I remember. I was blessed with immortality, my name would never die but so would my curse. Along with how my fate was corrupted not to long ago, I did his.
Twenty eight years ago
“CELENA, YOU’LL NEVER CATCH ME!!” I yell as I squeal as I run and take refuge under the ships boarding deck as I still can hear Celena’s rustling, eagerly scowling the shore for me.
“She’ll never find me” I say as I chuckle to myself as strangely I feel something tingly rub against my foot. As I avert my eyes to the water I see a strange fish and I lunge myself forward into the water in a effort to get away. But the water being to deep and my lack of knowledge about swimming left me helpless. Drowning in the ocean water after jumping to far. “CELENA, CELENA!!!” I scream her name as she doesn’t seem to answer as my little lungs fill with the salty water and the repugnant feeling of my body slowly being outweighed with the force of the water holding me down.
And as soon as I start to let go suddenly I’m wrapped around someone’s arms, cold but somewhat comfortable. As they walk me down it of the water and lay me on the sand and I start to cough violently as the fresh oxygen burns, entering my nostrils again.
“Zienna?” I hear as I open my eyes and sit up as I see a man with huge muscles and deep blue eyes with blonde hair that reminded me of the sun. “Zienna, look at me” he says as he looks in my eyes and breathes a sigh of relief to see me fine.
“Who are you?” I curiously ask him as he laughs and dodges the answers with another question.
“Are alright dearest?” He ask as I suddenly remember him from all the folklore I’ve been told. “Achelous would kill me if you got hurt” he says as I smile at him.
“Your Poseidon?” I ask as I let out a giggle as his eyes widen with surprise.
“No! I’m..........no” he says as suddenly he looks in my eyes and is frozen in fear. “No, Zienna No!” He says as suddenly he’s frightened by something, as he put his hand under my chin and gazes into my eyes and sighs.
“I know who you are, you look just like him” I giggle as I can’t help it. I recognized him from all the stories and his face was a dead giveaway.
“Here” he says as his fingers trace over the waves and he picks up two small waves from the water and converges them. As they crash together suddenly they fizzle out and how he hold his hand out to me and I see a seashell necklace held together by pearls.
“It’s beautiful!” I say excited to the stranger. As he beckons me to turn around and I do as he lays the necklace around me neck and he clips it as I hold the seashell in my palm.
“Promise me one thing Zienna” he says as as I turn around to face him and his surprised expression is now replaced by a serious one, the one I always saw that seemed to possess my fathers face. “Promise me that you’ll never go into the water without this necklace. Not for long. You must be protected child, for your purpose is great. The waves will be yours just like they are mine, they will part for you in time.” He tells me as I shake his hand and suddenly just like that he’s gone.
“ZIENNA!! Ha,I found you” says Celena as I turn around to see her and she gasps. “What happened to your eyes?” She ask me as I laugh.
“I met a stranger, he gave me this necklace. Isn’t it pretty?” I ask her as she nods but still scared.
“We should get you back to the castle” she says very cold and abrasive as she walks me back into the castle and it feels colder than usual. “MOM, MOM ITS ZIENNA!!” Celena yells as she drags me by the arm to our mother as she smile and nods.
“Is she hurt from one of your games. I told you to be careful” she says as Celena doesn’t say anything except throws me in front of mother and I just blantly smile.
“Hi mom” I blurt out as her eyes glue to mine as she backs away.
“TIMBUS!!” She screams as I stand there, now scared. I had no earthly idea what was happening, what was wrong with me?
“What is it darling?” He ask as he walk to us and I turn around to face him and he stops. “What is that” my father ask as he walks up to me and gazes at my necklace.
“A really nice man gave this to me, it’s pretty” I say as he ignores me and tries to yank it off of me but instead he flies across the room.
“TIMBUS” my mother yells as she coddles his head on her lap.
“GUARDS, LOCK HER UP. NOW!!!” My father says as the next thing I know two guards grab my arms and drag me away.
From that day on I never meet another person, never walked the market. Chained to a castle that was only my own, the most secluded part of the castle and force to be taunted with the view of what gave me this fate. The ocean. But I could still hear it calling and never once did I turn away it’s conversation.
“Zienna” I hear as somebody opens the door and I see Celena. The only one that risked it all through the years to see me. “It’s time” she says as I’m confused with her words. “It’s your eighteenth, your free” she says as she smiles as I freeze. Was it really true?
Present time
“I can’t help you” I say blantly as a idea emerges from my thoughts but stabs me in the chest as it does. “But I know someone who can”
