CH.13 -The Night Before

2077 Words
Seraphine's POV The letter runs to four pages. Two hours at the desk and the fire has burned from full to low and the room has cooled around me without my noticing either, which is itself information about where my attention has actually been. I set the pen down and read back what I have written and the problem is immediately clear. Three and a half pages of careful strategic analysis sitting on top of one last paragraph that is none of those things and that I wrote before I had fully decided to write it. I hold it over the fire's last flame. The corner catches. The paper darkens and curls and the last paragraph becomes ash and I sit in the quiet with the smell of it in the air and I do not let myself reconstruct what it said because reconstructing ash is not something I am going to do tonight. I go to the window. The compound is dark below me, the perimeter torches burning low, the sky a deep and absolute black. I press my palm to the cold glass and feel the cold pressing back and I stand there and I stop managing what I feel and simply feel it. The want that has been building for weeks, the warmth pointing north that I have been filing and suppressing and finding clinical language for since the morning Lysa brought me the account of him crouching in the frost. Three hundred miles between here and Dead Wood territory. Tomorrow that distance closes and the thought of it moves through me like the first heat of a spring that has been delayed too long and I let it move and I let it be exactly what it is. I want to see him. Not for the assembly or the investigation or the forty days or any of the things I have been telling myself this is about. For the specific and entirely unjustifiable reason that I want to be in the same room as him, to hear his voice instead of reading it, to see what his face does when there is no war between us and no parchment and no three hundred miles. I have been the Alpha of Light for three centuries. I have healed the dying and held the grieving and come home alone every single time and I have called that strength and tonight standing at this cold window I am not entirely sure it was strength. I am not entirely sure it was not just loneliness that had been in one place long enough to feel like a choice. The last torch on the eastern wall gutters and goes out. I go back to the desk and I find my place in the evidential summary and I pick up the pen and the words come slowly at first and then find their rhythm and the fire is nearly ash and the room is quiet and I am deep in the third paragraph when I hear the door. Not the outer door. My chamber door. The one fitted with a mechanism three decades ago that requires my specific handprint and cannot be picked and has never been opened by anyone but me. It opens. I am across the room before the door has swung fully inward, three centuries of instinct moving my body before my mind has finished processing the information, and I have my hand around the throat of whoever has just walked through my door and I have them against the wall before either of us has drawn a second breath. Then I see who it is. My hand does not move. Neither does he. Dravon Mors is standing against the wall of my private chamber in the middle of the night with my hand at his throat and he is looking at me with an expression that is not fear and is not aggression and is not anything I have seen on him in letters or intelligence reports or a century of war. He looks like a wolf who has ridden a very long way and is not sorry about it. The cold night air is still on his clothes, the smell of long travel and open territory and something beneath all of that, something darker and warmer, something my body registers before my mind does and responds to with a pull so immediate and so involuntary that I feel it move through my chest like a struck chord. My inner wolf goes completely still. Not the stillness of threat assessment. The stillness of recognition. Something deep and old and entirely beyond my control rising up through me and turning toward him the way a compass needle turns north, certain and immediate and not asking my permission, and I am three centuries old and I have never felt anything like it, like something in the core of me has been waiting for exactly this and has just been told the wait is over. I do not move my hand from his throat. My heart is doing something I am not going to examine right now. The shock of him here, real and physical and present in my actual chamber, the smell of him this close, fills the space between my instincts and my logic and my instincts are winning by a considerable margin. My mind says enemy alpha, private chamber, border violation. My body says something else entirely and has been saying it for weeks and is saying it considerably louder now that he is six inches away and real and the warmth that has been pointing north is surging toward him like it has been given permission to arrive. I find my voice. "How did you get through my border." Not a question. A demand, low and precise. He holds my gaze. His eyes are dark in the low light of the dying fire, the kind of dark that takes light in and keeps it, and meeting them directly does something to my pulse that I am choosing not to examine. "Carefully," he says. I stare at him. Three hundred miles. Through enemy territory. Past a border I have spent decades fortifying. Through a door no one else can open. And he says carefully with the calm of a wolf who finds the answer both true and sufficient. "That is not an answer." "No," he agrees. My hand is still at his throat and I am aware that I have not moved it and I am aware that he is letting me not move it and I am aware that the proximity of him is doing something to my skin, a heat that moves across it even at this distance, my body craving the closing of even this small gap in a way I have no strategic language for. The inner wolf that has been still since the moment of recognition is not still anymore. She is pushing at me from the inside, urgent and certain, responding to something in him that bypasses every layer of training and control and three centuries of being the Alpha of Light and goes directly to the place that is simply Seraphine. I drop my hand. I step back. He straightens from the wall and the full reality of him registers in a way that letters never allowed for. The width of his shoulders, the density of him, the specific quality of stillness he carries in his body that I now understand is not absence of feeling but absolute mastery of it, centuries of a man holding everything perfectly in place. His Essence moves at the edges of him, subtle and present, and where it reaches toward mine my skin warms and my inner wolf pushes harder and I press my fingers together at my sides and hold everything still. "Why are you here," I say. He is quiet for a moment. Not composing an answer. Taking the last moment before something that cannot be unsaid. "I wanted to see you," he says. Five words. They move through me from my chest to the soles of my feet and they dismantle three centuries of carefully maintained distance in the time it takes me to breathe out. Not strategy. Not intelligence. Not the measured careful language of unsigned letters. Just five words in his actual voice in my actual chamber and every logical thought I have been holding onto releases its grip simultaneously and I am left with nothing but what my body has known since the first letter arrived, since the first warmth pointed north, since the word crouched landed in my chest and refused to leave. I look at him for a long moment. "And now that you have," I say. Something in his expression breaks open. The last layer of control releasing all at once and what is underneath it is not what three centuries of war prepared me for. Just a man who has been carrying something enormous alone for a very long time standing in the dying light of my fire looking at me like I am the answer to a question he has been afraid to ask, and he is not hiding any of it, and the not hiding undoes me more completely than anything else in this room has managed. He crosses toward me. I do not step back. His hands come to my face and my heart stops and then starts again faster than before, his palms warm against my cheeks, and the moment his skin meets mine my body lights up from that point outward, warmth flooding through me in every direction, my skin coming alive under his touch in a way I have no framework for, craving more contact the way lungs crave air, my soul leaning toward him with a want so total it has no edges. His darkness is close enough now that my Essence rises to meet it without asking permission, reaching toward his dark the way it has never reached toward anything, and where the two meet I feel it through my entire body, a deep resonant warmth that has nothing clinical about it, nothing measured, just the overwhelming rightness of two things that were made to find each other finally arriving. My inner wolf is not pushing anymore. She has gone quiet in the specific way of something that has found what it was looking for and has simply stopped needing to search. I tip my face into his hands. I hear him exhale. Long and slow and unsteady, the sound of someone setting down something heavy they forgot they were carrying, and in three centuries I have never heard anything as intimate as that sound because it is involuntary and he does not do involuntary and I have done that to him. My hands find his chest. Under my right palm his heartbeat is fast. Not controlled. Not the steady measured beat of the most feared wolf in the shifter realm. Fast and real and present, and the knowledge of it moves through me like heat because it means he is as lost in this as I am, that the stillness he wears like armour has come apart in this room, and he is letting me feel it. He says my name. Seraphine. Low and unguarded. The voice underneath all the other voices, the one that has never been in any letter or council session or moment of the hundred year war between us, and my name in that voice travels through me from the point of his lips to every part of me simultaneously. My skin craves his hands and my soul reaches toward his darkness and every logical thought I had an hour ago is simply gone, dissolved, irrelevant, and I am not managing any of it and I do not want to manage any of it. I pull him down to me. His mouth finds my temple. The curve of my cheek. The line of my jaw moving toward the corner of my mouth and everywhere he touches my skin comes alive under his lips, hungry for more, my body moving toward him without instruction, and the darkness around him is warm and close and my light fills it without blazing, settles into it, and I turn my face up to meet him and his mouth is almost at mine and I close my eyes and I reach up and—
