CH.18 - Ten Feet

1450 Words
Seraphine's POV He is already there when I come through the trees. I see him before he knows I see him, a fraction of a second in which he is simply standing at the northern edge of the clearing with the bare trees at his back and the morning light coming in at an angle that does not soften anything, and in that fraction of a second before his eyes find mine I see him the way you see something when it does not know it is being looked at. Still. Not the stillness of someone waiting. The stillness of someone who has made a decision about how much of themselves the world gets to see and is holding that decision in place with a discipline so complete it has become indistinguishable from nature. He looks like the clearing itself, like something that has always been standing exactly there, and the sight of him after three weeks of letters and a dream I am not examining and warm knuckles at dawn hits me somewhere below the ribs before I have finished processing it. I keep riding. He watches me ride toward him and I keep my face composed and my seat easy and I do not let any of what is happening in my chest reach anything visible and by the time I dismount and loop my reins and walk across the clearing toward him I have assembled the version of myself that is the Alpha of Light, present and capable and entirely in control of this meeting. The warmth in my chest is not assembled. It has arrived at its destination after three weeks of pointing and it is doing something large and involuntary that I am managing one breath at a time. Ten feet. That is the distance between us when I stop and it is the most specific ten feet I have ever been aware of. Not the ten feet between an alpha and a threat. Not the ten feet of a council chamber or a border negotiation. The ten feet between three weeks of plain parchment and unsigned seals and the actual physical reality of the wolf who wrote them, and the gap between the version of him I constructed through the letters and the version standing in front of me in the morning light is significant. He is larger than I accounted for. Not just in height, though he is taller than the intelligence reports suggested and broader, the kind of build that speaks of centuries rather than years. It is the quality of his presence that the letters could not carry. The specific weight of being in the same space as someone whose Essence is ancient and vast and is currently being held with enormous precision at the edges of him, contained and still, and even contained and still it registers in my own Essence like a low sustained note felt in the chest rather than heard with the ears. My inner wolf lifts her head. She has been quiet since I rode out of Everbloom territory this morning, settled in the specific way she settles when she knows where she is going and has been waiting to get there, and now she is not quiet at all. She is fully alert and oriented toward him with a certainty that bypasses every layer of strategy and three centuries of being the Alpha of Light and goes directly to the place that is simply Seraphine. I keep my face exactly as it should be. He speaks first. Something about coming alone. I respond. He corrects me and something moves through his expression that is not quite amusement but lives in the same neighbourhood and I file it immediately because I was not prepared for that, for the possibility that the precision and the control might have a dry edge to it, and the filing does not hold. We go through the intelligence. This is what I came for and I do it with the full focused precision the situation requires because the situation requires it and because having something rigorous to apply my attention to is the only thing standing between me and the very specific problem of being ten feet from him in a clearing with no parchment between us. He is thorough. I expected thorough. What I did not expect is the speed of him, the way he moves through the evidential material with a comprehensiveness that forces me to recalibrate my assessment upward twice in the first twenty minutes, and both times I recalibrate I see him register that I am doing it and something in his expression shifts fractionally and that fractional shift does something to my pulse that I note and do not address. The conversation finds threads that were not on the agenda. We follow them. I am aware that we are following them. I am aware that the meeting has exceeded its required duration and that neither of us has moved to end it and I am aware that at some point in the last hour the distance between us has closed by two feet without either of us having moved deliberately, and I am aware of all of this and I keep talking because the alternative is ending the meeting and I find when I examine that option honestly that I am not ready to end the meeting. His Essence is close enough now that mine responds to it constantly, a low warm hum in my chest that has nothing analytical about it, his darkness at the edges of my awareness like weather that has not arrived yet but is present in the pressure of the air, and my skin is warm in a way that has nothing to do with the temperature of the clearing and everything to do with the eight feet between us and what my body has been doing with those eight feet since I stopped riding. He looks at me. I am already looking at him. The thread of the conversation goes somewhere and comes back and I respond and he responds and I am looking at his face and I am thinking about the letters and the So am I and the I wanted to see you and the warmth that has been pointing north since the morning Lysa brought me the account of him crouching in the frost and I am thinking about warm knuckles at dawn and the specific quality of a silence that contains three weeks of everything neither of us has said directly and I am thinking about none of this, I am talking about the assembly, I am being the Alpha of Light. His expression changes. Not dramatically. A shift at the edges of the control, something underneath it becoming briefly visible the way something moves beneath still water, and I have been reading his letters long enough to know what his control looks like and what it costs him and I am looking at the cost of it right now in the slight tension at his jaw and the specific quality of his stillness that is not calm but restraint and the way he is looking at me like I am something he has been trying not to want for longer than the war has lasted. The warmth in my chest is not pointing anymore. It has stopped pointing and stopped pulling and simply arrived, large and warm and certain, settled into the space behind my sternum like something that has come home after a very long journey and does not intend to leave, and I press my fingertips together at my sides and I breathe and I hold everything still and I look at him. He says my name. Seraphine. Not the way my name is said in council chambers or across border lines or in forty years of Coren's tactical proposals. The way it sounded in a dream I am not examining, low and unguarded, the voice underneath all the other voices, and hearing it here in the daylight in the neutral corridor with the bare trees and the morning light and eight feet of real air between us does something to me that three weeks of letters and one night of warm knuckles did not fully prepare me for. My breath catches. I do not move. I keep my face exactly as it should be and I do not move and I do not look away and I feel everything I am feeling from the soles of my feet to the crown of my head and I do not file any of it. He takes a step toward me. His hand moves.
