CH.17 - The Western Corridor

1443 Words
Dravon's POV I arrive first. This is intentional. I left Dead Wood territory before dawn, which means I have been riding for six hours and arrived at the western corridor with enough time to choose my position before she comes from the south. I want to see her arrive. Not because it is strategically useful to observe someone before they observe you, though it is, and not because I need the extra seconds to compose myself, though I find when I am standing here in the neutral corridor with the morning light coming through the bare trees that the extra seconds are not entirely unwelcome. I stand at the edge of the clearing and I wait. The neutral lands in the late morning are different from how they were two nights ago. The darkness is gone and the cold is clean rather than heavy and the bare trees hold the specific patient quality of things that are simply waiting for the right season. I have not slept well. This is not unusual. What is unusual is the reason, which I am not examining, and the specific quality of the restlessness, which I am also not examining, and the way the warmth in my chest has shifted from pointing to pulling since the letter arrived yesterday, which I am most definitely not examining. I hear her horse before I see her. The path from the Everbloom compound comes through the southern tree line and emerges into the clearing and I am standing at the northern edge with the trees at my back and I watch the tree line and I breathe and I tell myself I am ready for this and I am not entirely sure that is true. She emerges from the trees alone. Something happens in my chest. Not the warmth. Something larger than the warmth, something that moves through me in the moment she comes into view with a force that I have no adequate language for, that bypasses every analytical framework I have applied to this situation and lands somewhere below thought. She is riding a grey horse and she sits it with the easy authority of someone who has been doing this for centuries and she is looking ahead at the clearing and she has not seen me yet and I am standing at the northern edge watching her arrive and my Essence is doing something I have never felt it do. It is reaching toward her. Not outward in the way it reaches when it is asserting dominance or responding to threat. Toward. A specific directional pull aimed at the silver gold light I can feel at the edges of her Essence even at this distance, my darkness moving toward her light the way cold air moves toward warmth, following a pull it did not choose and cannot seem to stop, and I clamp down on it with everything I have and hold it still. She sees me. She does not stop riding. She holds my gaze across the clearing and she rides toward me at the same easy pace and she dismounts at the edge of the neutral ground and she loops her reins over the branch of the nearest tree and she walks toward me and I watch her walk toward me and I understand, with complete clarity and no small amount of difficulty, that the mental image I have been constructing of her through three weeks of letters is not inaccurate exactly but it is insufficient. She is real in a way the letters could not account for. The specific quality of her presence, the way she occupies space differently from everyone I have ever been in a room with, not loudly but completely, as though the air around her has been informed of her arrival and has arranged itself accordingly. The way she moves, with the unhurried confidence of a wolf who has never needed to announce herself because her presence does the announcing before she arrives. The warmth that comes off her Essence even at ten feet, subtle and steady, the kind of warmth that does not demand anything, simply exists. Her eyes. The intelligence reports described them as pale gold. They are not pale. They are the specific luminous gold of light moving through deep water and they are looking at me with an expression I spend approximately three seconds trying to classify before I accept that classification is not available to me right now. She stops ten feet away. Neither of us speaks immediately and the silence between us is not uncomfortable, it is the silence of two wolves who have been corresponding for three weeks and have said a great deal and have also left a great deal in the white space at the bottom of pages and are now standing in the same physical space for the first time with all of that present between them and no parchment to put it in. I speak first. "You came alone," I say. "You asked me to," she says. "I did not ask," I say. "You told me to." Something moves across her face. Not quite a smile. The thing that lives next to a smile in someone who is choosing not to let one arrive. "So I did," she says. The distance between us is ten feet and my Essence has not stopped pulling toward her since she came out of the tree line and I have been holding it still since she dismounted and the effort of holding it still while she is standing ten feet away looking at me with those eyes is a different kind of effort from what it costs in letters or at three hundred miles. We exchange the intelligence. This is what we came for and we do it thoroughly, moving through the evidential summary and the assembly strategy and the procedural questions with the focused precision of two wolves who have been building this case from opposite sides of a century of war and know it well enough to finish each other's conclusions. She is faster than I expected. Not faster than me, but the gap is smaller than the intelligence reports suggested and she finds the angle I had not yet seen twice in the first twenty minutes and both times I have to recalibrate my assessment upward and both times she notices me doing it and says nothing but the thing that lives next to a smile moves across her face again. The conversation runs longer than the agenda requires. She notices this. I see the moment she notices, the slight shift in her expression, the brief recalibration. She does not stop the conversation. Neither do I. The light has moved through the bare trees and the morning has become midday and we have covered everything the meeting required and several things it did not require and we are standing eight feet apart, two feet closer than when we started without either of us having moved deliberately, and I am aware of this and I am aware that she is aware of this and neither of us is addressing it. She says something about the assembly hall layout and the strategic positioning of the evidence presentation and I respond and she responds to my response and the conversation finds a new thread and follows it and the warmth in my chest is no longer pulling it is simply present, large and warm and certain, and holding it still has stopped feeling like discipline and started feeling like the last thing standing between this meeting and something neither of us has language for yet. I look at her. She is already looking at me. The thread of the conversation dissolves. Ten feet between us and everything we have not said and her eyes on my face and the warmth in my chest doing something enormous and quiet and my Essence at the very edge of what I am able to hold still, reaching toward her light with the specific reverence of a darkness that has spent three centuries consuming everything it touched and has finally found the one thing it does not want to consume. I say her name. Seraphine. Not because I intended to. Because it was there and the distance between intention and action collapsed without my authorisation and the word arrived before I could decide whether to let it and she looks at me when I say it with something in her face that makes the warmth in my chest stop being holdable. I take a step toward her. And without warning my hand moves on it's own accord.
