The air inside the elevator was heavy with tension. I brushed my fingertips over my lips; the minty taste of him lingered on my tongue.
Kyren stepped out of the elevator first. He was still the Ice King. No matter what I tried, I couldn't melt him. And he just ignited me, in the best way possible.
I ran a hand through my hair before following him out of the elevator. He jumped into the car, and I quickly followed suit. I got in on the passenger seat before awkwardly pressing my lips together in a thin line.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
He pulled out of his sparking spot before driving to campus. His thumb lightly tapped the steering wheel.
He kept his gaze on the road when he finally spoke. "New rules." He muttered, and my eyes widened in panic. Before I could even form a response, he was speaking again.
"I don't want you alone. Ever. If I'm on the ice, you're with your squad, and if you're not with them, you're with me." He laid down the rules.
"You want me to follow you around campus? Absolutely not. People will think I'm just another one of your thirsty little conquests." I argued, and his grip tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white.
"You know what happens when you break my rules," he rasped, his gaze lowering to my lips.
Nervous butterflies fluttered in my chest. I scoffed in disbelief before turning my face toward the window.
I caught his expression in the reflection of the glass. A dark, satisfied smirk raised the corner of his mouth, and my cheeks turned crimson.
Fine. I would follow his rules. He's the only safety net I have right now. He's the only person who knows about the stalker.
Kyren parked his car in his reserved parking spot. I looked around the parking lot and was surprised at how packed it was.
Kyren jumped out of the car, and I clutched my bag to my chest. "You go first. I'll leave when everyone's gone." I told him while sinking deeper into his expensive leather seat.
He smiled before coming over to my side of the car. He pulled the door open, and my eyes widened at him. "Hold my arm. Let's give your stalker food for thought."
"Are you planning on using me as bait?" I asked, disbelief lacing my every word.
"Don't tell me you're scared." He said, amusement flickering in his silver orbs.
I clenched my jaw before carefully getting out of the car. I grabbed my designer bag, letting it dangle from my arm. I plastered a confident smile on my face before placing my hand on Kyren's arm.
He led us through the thick crowd of students. Their curious gazes locked onto us. Within an instant, they had their phones pulled out, their cameras flashing wildly as they filmed us.
I nervously held my breath, my confident mask never slipping.
But Kyren noticed how my grip tightened on his arm. He leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. "Let them talk, Princess. Let them see exactly who you belong to."
We entered the gym together. I paused when I found Oliver already on the ice, leaning on his hockey stick, watching us. A cold shiver ran down my spine, under the impact of his gaze.
Kyren pulled me flush against his chest, and a soft gasp passed through my lips. He didn't care that the entire hockey team and cheer squad were watching us.
He brushed a strand of my hair behind my ear, and I looked deep into his eyes. He was standing so close that I could see the dark circles around his irises.
"Be good," he smirked down at me before leaving my side and heading into the locker room. I placed my hands on my flushed cheeks before, turned, and then headed into the cheer squad's locker room.
I placed my purse into my locker room before grabbing a hair tie and pulling my hair into a neat ponytail.
As I left the locker room, Jia linked her arm with mine. "You're one step closer to winning that bet against Brie."
"Not at all." I sighed tiredly.
"What do you mean?" Jia curiously questioned.
"I'll tell you about it later," I muttered before grabbing her hand and running onto the cheer mats.
"Alright, girls! Huddle up." I uttered, and the squad formed a circle around me. "Coach Laurel called in sick this morning, so I'm in charge today," I announced, and the girls sighed in relief, while excitedly clapping their hands.
Strangely, my dad wasn't here either. And he never missed practice. I shook my head to get my dad out of it.
"Let's start with some warm-ups," I uttered, and the girls eagerly followed my lead. They would do anything to avoid Coach Laurel's wrath. She was merciless.
Brie, who was in the middle of doing a heel stretch, looked at me, guilt washing over her face.
I lowered my gaze and went back to practice. After warm-ups, the girls got into position for the main dance routine for Spirit Day.
The music started, and we began dancing. I swayed my hips to the rhythm of the beat.
A blinding pain shot through my toes as someone stomped on my foot. I hissed out in pain, and the music cut. I turned to the person beside me. My eyes widened when I found Tessa standing next to me.
"I'm sorry. It was an accident." She blankly stated before leaving my side to join the second lineup of girls.
"It's okay," I muttered before sending a kind smile in her direction. Tessa wasn't the type who would hurt someone deliberately.
"Let's take it from the top!" I yelled into the air, ignoring the throbbing sensation in my foot.
We got to dancing again. Jia, Brie, Ellie, and Tessa joined me for the basket toss. I stepped onto the cradle with practiced ease. They lifted me into the air, and I twisted my body at the perfect angle.
As I came back down, Tessa took a step back, breaking the circle. I squeezed my eyes shut, preparing myself to hit the ground.
But when I opened my eyes, Jia, Brie, and Ellie successfully managed to catch me. They gently set me on the ground, and all the girls rushed over to my side.
I buried my face in my hands, and terrified sobs started pouring from my mouth. Jia and Brie wrapped their arms around me in a comforting hug.
Kyren slammed his hockey stick against the boards before rushing over to us.
I looked down at Tessa, who was still sitting on the ground. She rubbed her leg, claiming that she got a cramp, and that was the reason why she couldn't catch me.
If the girls didn't stand their ground, I could've died. I could've hit the ground and cracked my skull open.
Kyren came jogging over to me. He placed his hands on my cheeks before examining my body for any injuries.
"What the hell did you do? You could've killed her." He growled at Tessa, who shot him a blank look before going back to rubbing her leg.
Kyren pulled me into him, his arms tightly wrapping around my trembling form, and I started crying into his chest.
The stalker could quite literally be anyone. It felt like there were a thousand eyes on me, and I couldn't tell which ones belonged to the monster.
