We lay on his bed, not touching, a fraction of an inch separating us, but it felt like light years. Words were scarce, and once we’d entered his bedroom, his fingers had left mine. Luke had kicked off his sneakers, then stretched out across the mattress and patted the space next to him. I joined him, my limbs feeling tight, like I might need to bolt out of the room at any given moment. “Why?” I knew what he was asking, but I stalled. “It was complicated.” I sighed, then thought about my first time with a trick. The money had run out from the stack of bills given to me by my parents’ henchman. I had been living in a sketchy boarding house for a few months, and had taken a couple of jobs that I’d been fired from, the last one a fast-food joint where they’d caught me eating a chicken nugget
