Chapter1: impulse

939 Words
The first thing Ava Hayes noticed wasn't the music. It was Michael. He stood beneath the crystal lights with his hand resting far too comfortably on another woman's waist, smiling in a way Ava hadn't seen in weeks. Then, without hesitation, he leaned in and kissed her. The room didn't stop. Champagne glasses still clinked. Laughter floated through the ballroom. Conversations carried on as though nothing had happened. But for Ava, everything shattered. The invitation in her trembling hand crumpled before she even realised she was squeezing it. Her chest tightened until breathing became an effort, and the carefully applied smile she'd worn all evening disappeared. So this was why he had cancelled dinner. So this was why he had stopped answering her calls. So this was why every "I'm busy" had sounded colder than the last. He hadn't been drifting away. He had already moved on. Ava forced herself to look away before he noticed her. She refused to become the pathetic girlfriend crying in the middle of a ballroom. Not tonight. Not in front of hundreds of strangers. She turned sharply and walked through the crowd, each step faster than the last. Her heels clicked against the marble floor, matching the frantic rhythm of her heartbeat. By the time she reached the terrace overlooking the city, the cool night air hit her face. She inhaled deeply. It didn't help. She had spent three years believing she was building a future with Michael. Three years believing every promise, every plan, every whispered "I love you." How foolish. She laughed bitterly at herself. Love really did make people stupid. She should leave. Go home. Cry into her pillow. Pretend none of this had happened. Instead, she stayed exactly where she was, staring at the glittering skyline until the sting behind her eyes slowly faded. A waiter walked past with a tray of champagne. Without thinking, she picked up a glass. Then another. The warmth spread through her body, dulling the sharp edges of her heartbreak but doing nothing to silence the humiliation replaying in her mind. She had loved the wrong man. Again. Ava closed her eyes. "No more," she whispered under her breath. When she opened them, her gaze wandered back through the glass doors into the ballroom. That was when she saw him. He stood alone near one of the floor-to-ceiling windows, dressed in an impeccably tailored black suit that seemed almost insignificant beside the commanding presence of the man wearing it. He wasn't laughing. He wasn't trying to impress anyone. While the rest of the guests competed for attention, he seemed completely detached from the spectacle, quietly observing everything around him. People approached him. People left him. Yet no one lingered. There was something about him that demanded respect without asking for it. His calm unsettled her. His silence intrigued her. For reasons she couldn't explain, she couldn't look away. Maybe it was because he looked as though nothing in the world could ever hurt him. Unlike her. The thought made her smile faintly. How ironic. She had spent years making sensible decisions. Being the responsible daughter. The faithful girlfriend. The woman who always thought before she acted. Where had that brought her? Standing alone at a gala, trying not to cry. Her fingers tightened around the stem of her champagne glass. Just this once... She wanted to stop thinking. She crossed the ballroom before she could talk herself out of it. The distance between them disappeared with every step. He noticed her almost immediately. Dark eyes met hers with quiet curiosity. Not judgment. Not amusement. Just calm attention. She stopped in front of him. For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. It was as if the noise of the ballroom faded into the background. Ava studied him properly. He towered over nearly everyone in the room, standing at about six feet two, his broad shoulders filling out the tailored black suit effortlessly. His sharp jawline, neatly styled dark hair, and piercing eyes gave him an air of quiet authority. There was nothing flashy about him, yet something in his calm, commanding presence made him impossible to ignore. He didn't ask why she had approached. He simply waited. And somehow, that made her even bolder. Perhaps it was the champagne. Perhaps it was the betrayal. Perhaps it was the desperate need to feel something other than heartbreak. Whatever the reason, the words escaped before she could stop them. One reckless decision. One night. No expectations. No promises. No names. I’ll pay you. Neither of them spoke. The music faded into the background as the seconds dragged on, each making Ava’s heartbeat louder than the last. Reality hit. What had she just done? Heat rushed to her cheeks as embarrassment settled in. Every sensible part of her screamed at her to apologise and walk away before she humiliated herself any further. She lowered her gaze, unable to meet his eyes. Then, for the first time since she had approached him, he spoke. "Come with me." His deep, steady voice carried no surprise, no mockery, and no hesitation. Before Ava could respond, he reached for her hand. The moment his hand found hers, warmth spread through her fingertips. It was such a simple gesture, yet it left her strangely comforted, as though he had silently reassured her without saying a single word. Without another word, he led her through the glittering ballroom, past curious glances and whispered conversations, towards the grand exit. Ava's pulse quickened with every step. She had no idea where he was taking her. All she knew was that there was no turning back.
