CHAPT.6: Breakfast and Blood Orange Roses

669 Words
The next morning, the sunlight streaming into the kitchen was the only warm thing in the Thorne mansion. Eager to shake off the lingering, electric tension from her midnight mistake in Alexander’s bedroom, Clara had slipped downstairs at dawn. Her fierce independence wouldn't let her just sit around like a helpless guest. She needed to do something with her hands, so she took over the massive, industrial-grade kitchen, much to the surprise of the resident chef. By eight o'clock, the air was thick with the rich, comforting scent of freshly baked classic French croissants, cinnamon-infused twisted pastries, and a perfectly folded herb omelet. Cooking was her sanctuary. Here, she wasn't a desperate girl trapped in a contract; she was a culinary artist in total control. A sharp click of leather shoes on the marble floor signaled his arrival.Alexander stepped into the kitchen, stopping dead in his tracks. He wore a crisp, tailored charcoal suit, looking every bit the unyielding billionaire CEO. His gray eyes swept over the flour dusted on Clara’s cheek, then down to the elaborate spread on the counter."What is all this?" Alexander asked, his voice low and cautious."Breakfast," Clara replied evenly, wiping her hands on a dishtowel. "I needed to clear my head. And since I am living here, I am going to cook. It’s what I do."Alexander stepped closer, looking at the perfectly golden pastries. "The estate has a fully certified kitchen staff, Clara. Your contract does not require you to be a maid.""I am not a maid, Mr. Thorne. I am a chef," Clara countered, her proud nature flaring. "And unlike you, I don't rely on a bloodless script for everything I do. Eat or don't eat, it’s up to you." A faint, almost invisible twitch appeared at the corner of Alexander’s mouth. He pulled out a sleek barstool, sitting down and picking up a fork. But before he could take a single bite, the heavy kitchen doors swung open. Mrs. Gable entered, carrying a massive, wildly extravagant arrangement of blood-orange roses that looked entirely out of place in the minimalist estate."Forgive the interruption, sir," Mrs. Gable said, looking incredibly uncomfortable. "This was just delivered to the front gates by a private courier. It is addressed specifically to Mrs. Thorne."Alexander’s fork paused mid-air. The temperature in the kitchen plummeted to sub-zero in an instant. To the spectacular Queen trapped in the dark tower. Orange suits your fiery spirit far better than Thorne's cold gray. Count the days, sweetheart. — J.S."Julian Sterling," Clara whispered, her blood running cold as she realized the implications.A terrifying silence filled the room. Alexander slowly set his fork down, the silver clinking sharply against the porcelain plate. He stood up, his tall frame casting a long, dark shadow across the sunlit kitchen. The quiet fury radiating from his eyes was far more dangerous than any loud shouting match. He walked over to the arrangement, his gray eyes locking onto Clara’s pale face. "It seems my rival is even more obsessed with my wife than I anticipated.""I didn't ask for these, Alexander," Clara said quickly, refusing to back down but wanting to clear her name. "He is doing this to get under your skin.""I know exactly what he is doing," Alexander hissed, his voice a lethal purr. He suddenly grabbed the heavy crystal vase of roses and dumped the entire, multi-thousand-dollar arrangement directly into the large stainless steel trash bin beside the counter. The glass shattered against the metal rim, and orange petals scattered across the floor. He turned back to Clara, his face carved from marble. "But from this moment on, you do not accept packages, you do not answer unauthorized calls, and you do not leave this estate without my personal security detail. Julian wants a war, but he will not use my wife to win it."Before Clara could protest his sudden, overprotective lockdown, Alexander grabbed a single cinnamon pastry from her spread, checked his watch, and walked out of the kitchen without another word. ---- to be continued....*
