CHAPT.3: Into The Lion's Den

795 Words
The iron gates of the Thorne Estate parted like the jaws of a silent monster. Clara looked out the tinted window of the sleek black town car, her knuckles white as she gripped her cheap canvas duffel bag. The mansion loomed at the end of a winding, tree-lined driveway—a monolithic fortress of cold gray stone and towering glass panels. It looked grand, expensive, and completely devoid of life. The driver killed the engine and opened her door with practiced, robotic politeness. "Welcome home, Mrs. Thorne," he said, the new title cutting through Clara like a knife. She stepped onto the immaculate gravel driveway, her breath hitching as the front doors swung open. Instead of Alexander, she was met by a stern, middle-aged woman in a crisp gray uniform."I am Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper," the woman announced, scanning Clara’s faded jeans and worn sneakers with an unreadable expression. "Mr. Thorne is currently at the office. I am instructed to show you to your quarters. Follow me." The interior of the mansion was breathtakingly cold. Polished white marble floors reflected the harsh glare of minimalist chandeliers, and abstract paintings that cost more than Clara’s entire education hung on the stark walls. It felt more like a modern art museum than a home.Mrs. Gable led her up a grand, sweeping staircase and down a long, quiet eastern wing. She stopped before a heavy mahogany door. "This is your room, madam. The master suite is located on the completely opposite side of the villa, in the western wing. As per your arrangement, that area is strictly off-limits to you.""I understand," Clara murmured, stepping inside. Her bedroom was vast, decorated in muted tones of cream and gold, featuring a king-sized bed and a private balcony. It was a beautiful prison cell. Before she could even unzip her bag, Mrs. Gable tapped her clipboard. "You do not have time to unpack, ma'am. Mr. Thorne has scheduled your first public appearance for tonight. A high-stakes corporate charity gala is being held at the Metropolitan Museum. A team of stylists will arrive in ten minutes to prepare you."Panic flared in Clara's chest. "Tonight? But I thought I would have a few days to adjust.""Mr. Thorne's timeline does not wait," Mrs. Gable replied coldly, turning on her heel and leaving the room. Four hours later, Clara stood before the full-length mirror, barely recognizing the woman staring back. The stylists had pulled her dark hair into an elegant, intricate updo, leaving a few soft tendrils to frame her face. She wore a stunning, emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her curves perfectly before draping gracefully to the floor. The color made her green eyes pop, but no amount of makeup could hide the profound anxiety swirling in them. The bedroom door clicked open.Alexander Thorne stepped into the room, looking devastatingly handsome in a flawless black tuxedo. His piercing gray eyes swept down her body, lingering for a fraction of a second before his expression flattened into its usual icy mask."You look acceptable," Alexander said, his voice a low baritone. He walked over to her, holding out a velvet box. Inside lay a breathtaking diamond necklace that caught the light like frozen fire. "Turn around."Clara obeyed silently. She felt the brush of his cold, calloused fingers against the bare skin of her neck as he fastened the clasp. A sudden, electric shiver shot down her spine, making her gasp softly."Get used to my touch, Clara," Alexander whispered near her ear, his breath warm against her skin. "Tonight, the cameras will be watching our every move. My stepmother, Beatrice, will be there, looking for any crack in our story. If she discovers this marriage is a sham, she will use it to convince the board of directors that I am unstable, stripping me of the CEO title."Clara turned around to face him, her chin lifting defiantly. "I told you, I will keep my end of the bargain. My brother’s medical bills depend on it. Just tell me what I need to do. ""You need to smile. You need to look at me as if I am the center of your universe," Alexander commanded, his eyes narrowing. "And most importantly, remember Rule Number Five. Do not mistake any of this for reality. This gown, this jewelry, this night—it is all a performance.""Don't worry, Mr. Thorne," Clara said, her voice laced with quiet steel. "I have no intention of falling in love with a machine."A dark flicker passed through Alexander’s eyes, but it vanished as quickly as it appeared. He offered her his arm. Clara hesitated for a heartbeat, then slid her hand through the crook of his elbow. The lion's den was waiting, and it was time to play her part. ---- to be continued....*
