AUTHOR'S POV
Jennifer hesitates as Channing's question hangs in the air, but she doesn’t hold back. She tells him exactly what their mother told Mika, including the harsh things she herself told her the last time she came to the hospital, and Channing flinches, his stomach twisting.
"s**t," he whispers, rubbing his hands across his face, and Jennifer says she will apologize to Mika, to which Channing says his mother should also apologize.
After a brief pause, he looks at Jennifer. “Can I borrow your phone?” And Jennifer nods. “Yeah, but... your phone is here too.” She gestures toward the drawer beside his bed and Channing opens it and finds his phone inside.
