Howling caves

The Howling Caves smelled like old blood and wet stone. We got there at midnight. Rhys didn’t light a torch. “You don’t need light,” he said. “You need to listen.” I hugged myself. My hands were still bruised from the stick. “What am I listening for?” “Your wolf,” Rhys said. “The Silent Wolf. It’s been asleep for 5 years.” I wanted to laugh. “I don’t have a wolf. I’m just” “Empty?” Rhys cut in. “That’s what Doran Vex wanted you to think. Your pack had the rarest bloodline. We mute other wolves. We break commands.” He stepped closer. “That’s why he killed them.” The name hit me like a punch. Doran Vex. My objective sharpened. Kill him. “Take off the collar,” Rhys said. I blinked. “What? I can’t” “You can. It’s not locked. It’s just heavy.” I reached up. My fingers shook. The metal slid off. Cold air hit my neck for the first time in 5 years. Rhys tossed me a dagger. Wood handle. Dull blade. “Cut me.” “What?” “Do it. Small cut. On my arm.” I hesitated. My flaw again. Too soft. Rhys sighed. “Naya. If you can’t hurt me, you can’t hurt Vex.” I nodded. Swallowed. Dragged the blade across his forearm. A thin line of red appeared. “Now touch it,” Rhys said. I put two fingers on the cut. Nothing happened. Rhys watched me. “Think of the fire. Think of your parents. Think of #7.” Anger rose in my chest. Hot. Ugly. The cut under my fingers went pale. The blood stopped. Rhys’s eyes widened. “Again.” I pressed harder. The wound sealed. Like it was never there. “Holy hell,” Rhys whispered. “You muted my healing.” My knees gave out. “I ,I did that?” “You did,” Rhys said. He knelt in front of me. “This is your potential, Naya. You’re not weak. You were just caged.” I started shaking. Not from fear. From relief. From rage. Five years. Five years of scrubbing floors while I had this inside me. “Teach me,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. “Teach me to control it.” Rhys nodded. “First rule. You can’t do it when you’re scared. Only when you choose.” We trained all night. Touch a rock → it goes cold. Touch Rhys → his wolf goes quiet for 10 seconds. Touch myself → the scars on my back stopped aching. By dawn I was exhausted. But I was smiling. Rhys handed me water. “You did good.” “Will it work on Vex?” I asked. Rhys’s face went hard. “If you can touch him. Which is the problem. He’s never alone.” “So we change the map,” I said. The words surprised me. “We don’t go to him. We make him come to us.” Rhys stared at me. Then he laughed. One short, surprised sound. “When did you get smart?” “I had 5 years to think,” I said. “While I was a slave.” Rhys stood. “New objective then. Stage 2: Get strong enough that Vex hears your name. Stage 3: Lure him out.” He held out his hand. I took it. As we left the caves, the sun was rising. It hit the snow and turned it gold. For the first time, I didn’t flinch at the light. Outside the cave entrance, there were footprints. Big ones. Not Rhys’s. Rhys saw them too. He pulled me behind him. “Blackthorn guards,” he said quietly. “They tracked us.” My heart sped up. But my hands didn’t shake. I looked at my fingers. The same fingers that just sealed a wound. “Let them come,” I said. Rhys glanced at me. Proud. “That’s my girl.” The howling started in the distance. Not wolves. Men. And I wasn’t running.
