The black car idled downstairs.
Evelyn's hands were shaking. "He's here. Alexander's here."
Damien moved fast. He went to the window and peeked through the curtain. "It's his driver. And two bodyguards."
"He can't see me like this," Evelyn whispered, tears rising. "He'll take them from me. He'll say I'm unfit."
Damien turned to her. His expression was hard. Decisive. "Then we're leaving. Now."
"What? Where?"
"With me." Damien grabbed her bag and her keys. "Evelyn, I won't let him hurt you. Not again."
There was a knock on the door. Hard. Three times.
"Mrs. Carter," a man's voice said. "Mr. Carter would like a word."
Evelyn froze. Damien pulled her behind him.
"Don't answer it," he murmured. "There's a back exit down the hall."
They slipped out the back door and down the stairs. Damien's own car was parked around the corner.
As they drove away, Evelyn watched the building in the side mirror. Alexander stepped out of the car. In a suit. Face like stone.
He was too late.
In the car, silence.
Finally, Damien spoke. "Come stay at my place. In Victoria Island. You'll be safe there. Doctors, security, everything."
Evelyn hugged her arms. "Why are you doing this?"
Damien glanced at her. "Because they're my children too. And because... because I owe you that much. For that night. For disappearing."
Evelyn looked out the window. "I don't trust you. I don't trust any Carter."
"I know," Damien said. "So don't trust me. Just let me protect you until the babies are born. After that... you can decide what you want."
Evelyn didn't answer.
But when they pulled into Damien's gated mansion 30 minutes later, she didn't get out of the car.
Not yet.
