In this moment, the scene before me resembled a hellish tableau. Inside the silver cages, dozens of towering silver crosses stretched towards the ceiling, each bearing men and women crucified like Jesus. The deliberately bright incandescent lights illuminated the area as if it were daylight. I walked slowly, peering through the silver bars, inspecting these beings nailed to the crosses. Their clothes were tattered, and their skin was so pale it was almost transparent. Every single one of them hung their heads in a display of utter helplessness, with tubes inserted into their arms through which blood flowed slowly.
As I examined them closely, a man suddenly lifted his head, his pitch-black eyes locking onto mine, revealing his fangs with a hiss. I gasped, "A vampire?" Overwhelmed by fear, I turned to Matthew, stammering, "They... they’re all vampires?"
"Exactly. This is the organization's vampire dungeon," Matthew said, lifting his chin, his eyes burning with a fiery determination. "Vampires cannot endure the searing pain of silver, making it their most fatal shackle." He reached through the bars and gripped the vampire man's cheeks tightly. The vampire winced in agony, the bones in his face making a sickening sound.
"The crosses can suppress a vampire's power to some extent, but for the more powerful ones, they serve merely as a psychological deterrent." Matthew released his grip, and the vampire’s head drooped again. "I imprison all captured vampires here, continually drawing their blood to weaken them, while studying their habits to find ways to eliminate them." Ambition gleamed in Matthew’s eyes as he continued, "There are currently only 42 vampires here. We are always striving to capture more."
Pointing to a distant black door, I asked, "What's behind that door?" Matthew's lips curved into a cold smile. "That leads to an even more terrifying place— the ultimate prison for vampires." He looked at me, his eyes filled with unwavering determination. "Since we’re here, let’s take a look."
We approached the heavy silver door, engraved with a cross. Matthew pushed it open, and we stepped into a room constructed of the finest silver. In the center were five enormous coffins, styled in a black pentagonal shape reminiscent of old European designs. "What are these coffins for?" I asked.
"These coffins are used to imprison and seal the leaders of the four major vampire families and the Vampire King," Matthew explained.
"Vampire families?" I questioned.
"Yes," Matthew nodded. "Unlike solitary vampire hunters, vampires prefer to live in family groups. The four major vampire families are the Compton, Pitt, DiCaprio, and Hathaway families. Each has its own leader, the most powerful vampires. The Vampire King, however, remains a mysterious and little-known figure."
"Our goal is to capture these family leaders and seal them in these coffins with special daggers," Matthew said gravely. "Only these daggers, made from ancient Chinese bronze, can imprison their immortal bodies."
"How many family leaders have you sealed so far?" I asked, curious.
"One," Matthew pointed to one of the coffins. "The leader of the Hathaway family, Robin Hathaway, has been subdued." He carefully opened the coffin lid, revealing a decayed, blackened corpse inside. A bronze dagger was deeply embedded in its heart. "Even in such a state, they are still alive?" I asked, astonished.
"Yes, they are still alive," Matthew replied, his voice calm and resolute. "Our mission will be complete when all the vampire leaders and the mysterious Vampire King are sealed here."
"Is that your ultimate goal?" I asked.
"No, it’s the organization’s ultimate goal," Matthew corrected. "And, of course, mine as well." He turned to me, his eyes filled with hope. "Shiyun Qian, from a woman wandering the streets of Manhattan, tormented to the point of pregnancy by rogues, to who you are now, you've shown the potential to become a true vampire hunter. I hope you seize this opportunity to help me achieve this great mission."
I took a deep breath and nodded firmly, "Alright, I will."
Matthew nodded in satisfaction and then turned to leave. I stood in the dungeon's center, gazing at the crucified vampires and the leaders lying in their coffins. A strange excitement and sense of purpose surged within me. I knew I was about to embark on a journey filled with challenges and dangers, but I also believed that under Matthew's guidance, I could become a true vampire hunter, bringing a glimmer of light and hope to this world. A vampire, bound to a cross, roared furiously at me again. I glanced at my clenched hands and then faced the dark creature. Like Matthew, I reached through the silver bars and gripped the vampire's cheeks firmly. Power surged within me, and as I gazed into its fearful eyes, an inexplicable thrill arose in my heart. Perhaps I was destined to be a vampire hunter, born to fight the darkness.
