CHAPTER 2

SELENE'S POV. I stood at the centre of the gathering, the air thick with anticipation. The moon hung full and heavy in the night sky, casting a lovely glow on the assembly of werewolves gathered for the mating ceremony. Alpha Dam, my betrothed mate since childhood, stood beside me, his imposing figure radiating authority. Right behind him was his father, Alpha Alex but now a Lycan King after the initiation of Alpha Dam as the new Alpha. Alpha Dam’s powerful voice resonated through the clearing, addressing the blood moon and Silver Creek packs. “Pack members of Blood Moon and Silver Creek,” Alpha Dam’s voice echoed. "We stand united tonight to witness the union of our packs. In the face of the recent tragedy, we find strength in unity. Our packs will prevail against the werewolf hunters and rogue attacks that may come our way.” His voice came, commanding attention. “The loss of the Alpha of Silver Creek is a tragedy that touched us, but at this moment of sorrow, we find an opportunity for unity.” I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. This was the moment my late father had envisaged- a union that would strengthen our packs against external threats. “I stand before you not just as your future Alpha but as a leader devoted to forging unity between our packs," Alpha Dam declared, his gaze shifting between our expectant faces. “Today marks the union that transcends bloodlines and strengthens our packs,” Alpha Dam proclaimed. “Selene, daughter of the late Alpha from Silver Creek pack, I accept you as my Luna." The crowd broke out in howls and cheers, celebrating the promise of a new era. “As the Lycan king, I stand as a witness today. May this union strengthen the love between our packs," Lycan King Alex concluded. I felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety as Dam’s words and that of his father sounded. The weight of responsibility settled on my shoulders as the future Luna of Blood Moon pack and Silver Creek pack. I could feel the crowd’s eyes on me, carefully examining my every reaction. I met Alpha Dam’s gaze for a moment, hope flickered within me. Perhaps, despite our arranged union, there was a chance for a genuine connection. As Alpha Dam and I stepped away from the crowd, heading towards the private chambers. I couldn't help but feel a sense of uncertainty tighten in my stomach. Alone in the room, Dam turned to me. “Selene,” he began, his voice colder than the night air. “Yes, Alpha Dam,” I replied, trying to hide my unease. “This union is a necessity for the stability of our packs. However, you should know the truth,” he stated. Confusion was written all over my face as I waited for him to continue. “I accepted you as Luna out there for a show-off, a necessary act for the packs,” Dam confessed, his eyes filled with no feeling of remorse. “You are not my true Luna. When the time is right, I will bring Erica and make her my Luna. " The words hit me like a sudden gust of wind, leaving me breathless. “But…but my father arranged our betrothal for the unit of our packs,” I stammered, struggling to figure out the betrayal unfolding before me. Dam’s expression hardened. “This is a power struggle, Selene. We do what we want for the survival of our packs. Your role is to secure their loyalty, nothing more." I felt a lump forming in my throat as I tried to speak. The reality of my situation hit like a tidal wave. I had been a pawn in a game of power struggle and I hadn't known all these while. “Dam, I thoug…I thought we were meant to be mates." My breath caught in my throat. He cut me off with a scoff, adding a bitter edge to his tone. “This was never about love. It’s a strategic move to power and control. Keep this a secret or the consequences will be severe,” he retorted. I nodded silently, the weight of his words sinking in. Just as I tried to collect my thoughts, the door opened and Erica-a kind of blood moon pack entered the chamber with a sly grin on her face. “I overheard everything, Alpha Dam," Erica announced, her eyes gleaming with mischief as she shuffled her curly hair. “Selene dear,” she sneered, “you thought you’d become Luna? Well, well, you are just a pawn in his game.” She said. I felt an intense pain in my chest. Dam shot Erica a warning look, but Erica continued, fearlessly. “Don't get too comfortable, Selene. You mean nothing to him. He’s got plans for someone more suitable for his ambitions and that's me." I clenched my fist, fighting back tears and humiliation. Erica’s words cut deeper than Dam’s betrayal. She circled me, taunting, “You thought you were special because your dad was an Alpha, didn't you?" Erica questioned sarcastically. I sensed a cold detachment that sent shivers down my spine. “Just wait, he’ll cast you aside like a used pup when he's done using you to solidify his power because you are nothing but a stepping stone for Alpha Dam’s ambitions.” Erica continued. Dam interjected, “Erica, that's enough.” I stumbled backwards, my world unraveled right before me. The room filled like a suffocating cage closing in on me. I wanted to scream but the load of reality held me captive. Dam’s deception had left me in the sticks, exposed to the cruelty of the new era. As Erica left with an undefeated smirk, Dam’s gaze bore into mine once more. “Remember your place, Selene. This is how it has to be for the sake of the packs.” I stood in the effect of shattered dreams, the weight of secrecy pressing down on my shoulders. One I thought would be my mate, had just shattered the dreams I had since I was a child. The pack members celebrated the union of the packs with distant howls, unaware of the deceptive lies within their midst and the tragedy that just befell me. What is my fate about the revelation from the moon goddess, will it come to pass? How? I asked myself in silence as my eyes welled up in tears.
