Chapter Twenty-Eight
Slowly over the next few weeks, once the wedding and Christmas are far behind us and the overseas family members have returned to their various parts of the world, I start talking to Mom again. About everything. I talk to Sarah, living happily with her new husband a few suburbs away, and to Julia, via Skype. I talk to Isabelle as well, and the new friends I’m starting to make. It’s an effort at first, like ticking an item off my to-do list, but it gradually becomes easier. More natural.
And then one day, I come up with the crazy notion that I need to speak to Braden’s mother. I’m still haunted by the fact that she blames me, and I need to find a way to get past that. I may be living more of a normal life these days, but it will never be entirely normal with that guil
