Adam stood not far behind, seemingly unsurprised by the scene unfolding.
Smiling, Adam said, "Sir, Mrs. Fontaine has promised to take good care of you from now on."
Victor let out a mocking laugh, casting a sidelong glance at Adam. His tone was dripping with sarcasm. "Adam, what makes you so sure she's telling the truth?"
He added, "The Harper family also swore up and down that the wedding would go off without a hitch."
Adam cleared his throat, steering the conversation elsewhere. "Miss Harper has been apprehended. The Harper family has reserved the top floor of the Imperial Hotel and plans to apologize to you formally for her actions." He produced a neatly folded invitation from his uniform pocket, placing it on the table. "The event is scheduled for tonight."
Victor curled his lips into a derisive smirk. "If they're so eager to make amends, wouldn't it be rude of me not to attend? Inform Nathan to pick me up on time."
Adam nodded and left the room.
Meanwhile, Anna received an unfamiliar text message.
Lucas: 8 PM tonight, Rainview Suite at the Imperial Hotel. Let's talk.
At first, she thought it was odd and was about to delete it but realized the sender might be Lucas.
She quickly typed back.
Anna: Lucas?
The reply came almost instantly.
Lucas: It's me.
Anna considered blocking him again but hesitated. She thought about the diamond necklace Lucas had given her as an engagement gift. Since she was now married to someone else, it seemed appropriate to return it.
As Anna was leaving, she bumped into Adam.
"Heading out, ma'am? I can arrange for a driver to take you," Adam offered.
Knowing she was going to meet her ex-fiancé, Anna feared Victor might misunderstand, so she politely declined. "No need, Adam. I've already called for a car."
With that, she hastened her steps and left.
At 7:50 PM, Anna arrived outside the Imperial Hotel.
At exactly 8 PM, she pushed open the door to the private suite.
Lucas was seated on the couch. The moment he saw her, his expression darkened, and he immediately began to question her. "Anna, you've really disappointed me! Even if you wanted to act out of spite, you shouldn't have married some random man. Now this whole mess has blown up in the media, and do you realize how much damage it's causing my family's business?"
Faced with his barrage of accusations, Anna quietly looked at him. "Lucas, how is any of this my fault?"
She continued, her tone calm yet firm, "You're the one who ruined everything on our wedding day."
Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried an undeniable resolve.
Lucas was momentarily stunned, unable to believe the once gentle and compliant Anna was now standing her ground.
Not wanting to waste time, Anna opened her purse, took out a jewelry box, and placed it on the table in front of him. "Here's the diamond necklace you gave me. I'm married now. From this point on, there's nothing between us."
Lucas stared at the box, his eyes wide, as if he couldn't believe she was serious.
A trace of panic flashed across his face but was quickly replaced by anger. "You're married? Just like that? Who is this man?"
Then, as if realizing something, he sneered. "Anna, did you cheat on me? Did you intentionally sabotage the wedding so I'd call it off?"
Anna was speechless.
'A dirty mind sees dirt everywhere,' she thought, exasperated.
Just as she was about to retort, the door to the suite creaked open, and Evelyn stepped inside.
Dressed in a white dress, Evelyn exuded fragility, as though a light breeze could topple her.
Lucas's attention immediately shifted to Evelyn. His expression softened with concern. "Evelyn, why did you leave the hospital? Are you feeling okay?"
"Lucas, you're always worrying too much about me. I'm fine. I just came because I heard you were meeting Anna and thought I'd apologize to her in person to clear up any misunderstandings between you two," Evelyn said with faux sincerity.
Listening to Evelyn's sanctimonious tone made Anna feel nauseous.
Since she had already clarified things with Lucas, Anna saw no reason to linger.
"There's no need for an apology. I wish you two a long and happy life together." Her voice was indifferent, though her words dripped with sarcasm.
As she stood to leave, Anna's gaze accidentally fell on Evelyn's neck. She froze.
The emerald necklace Evelyn was wearing—it was the one Anna had kept in her home safe. How could Evelyn have it?
Evelyn noticed Anna's stare and subtly avoided eye contact, but she quickly regained her composure.
She lightly touched the necklace, a shy smile playing on her lips. "Anna, are you looking at this necklace? It's not much, really. Lucas gave it to me as a birthday gift. He wanted to give me a diamond necklace, but I thought it was too extravagant. I told him to give it to you instead because I didn't want you to feel upset."
Anna's heart turned cold. So her engagement gift had been Evelyn's discarded hand-me-down.
Fixing Evelyn with a piercing gaze, Anna said coldly, "Evelyn, I don't care how you got that necklace, but it belongs to me, and you will return it."
Evelyn's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Anna, I know you've never liked me and have always misunderstood my relationship with Lucas. I've already apologized to you. Why must you keep targeting me over a necklace?" She clutched her chest as if she might faint any moment.
Lucas immediately rushed to support her, frowning at Anna. "Anna, you know Evelyn isn't in good health. Do you have to push her like this? It's just a necklace. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?"
Shaking with anger, Anna retorted, "Lucas, you're still defending her? You know exactly how much this necklace means to me, yet you took it without my permission and gave it to her. Who's really being unreasonable here?"
