Dariusz whispered in broken sobs throughout the night of all that had occurred. The Madam examined the wounds on his chest while he spoke and knew instinctively that his pain was caused by something much deeper than a Tartar’s arrow. She listened intently as he talked of Aleksandra and what she meant to him—of their love and friendship, their dreams. And as the man in her arms told his story, the Madam thought back to that day in the Southern Han of the Grand Bazaar. She recalled the sunlight shimmering in the mane of red hair, the sweetness of the voice and the luster of the ivory skin. “I know where she is.”
