Chapter 1

“Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday Savannah and Chelsea, Happy birthday to you!” Today was Savannah and Chelsea’s 16th birthday. Today their lives will change forever! Leena’s POV Today my girls turn 16. I’ve silently been dreading this day since they were left on my porch as babies. Their birth mother left two notes with them. One for John and Leena and one for the girls to open on their 16th birthday. I had read the girls’ letter every year on their birthday and today was no different. Aside from the fact that I’d actually have to give it to them today. I was afraid of what the letter meant. Was it true? Or was their birth mother crazy? Either way I didn’t want to upset the girls. Especially not on their birthday. Although in my letter it said it was very important they received this on their 16th birthday. I guess it is up to the girls to decide what to do with the letter and it’s contents. They can handle it... right!? The morning of the Girls’ 16th birthday is here. And as always John and I walk on their room each of us holding a cupcake. (As we have done every year since they were little). They open their eyes and smile knowing what we are up to. We sing Happy Birthday to them and give them the worlds biggest hugs. Gosh do we love our girls! “Good morning mom, dad.” The girls say in unison. That never gets old. I suppose it’s a twin thing. We leave the girls to get ready for the day. As they come downstairs for breakfast the letter and a tattered black book is on the table. Savanna’s POV “Mom? What is this?” My sister Chelsea asks. I take a glance at what she is looking at and looked at our mother with confusion. “Yeah mom what is this? This doesn’t look like yours or dads hand writing.” I chime in. Our beautiful mother with her long dark hair looks at us with her bright blue eyes becoming sad and full of tears. My sister and I look at each other trying to figure out what on earth might be wrong. Chelsea’s POV Savannah and I knew we were adopted. Mom and Dad never hid that from us. But they also never let us forget how much we were loved regardless of where we came from. After meeting my sisters eyes I asked my mom again... “What is this letter?” I paged through the little black book that looked hundreds of years old. “And where did this book come from? Why is it blank? And who is Davina and Samara?” The only names written in the very first page. Mother continued sobbing as dad walks into the kitchen to refill his coffee before leaving for work. He kisses me on the head and does the same to Savannah. “It’s from your mother... Freya” he says casually and walks out the door. My sister and I look at each other in bewilderment finally knowing her name. But wait how did they know her name. Mom finally calms down to tell us when we were found on their porch we were left with two letters. The first for them and the second for us. She told us what her letter said. And then we grabbed ours and the book and ran to our room. For the first time ever Savannah and I decide to skip school. We need to read this letter and get some answers. We are sitting on on Savannah’s bed and together we take the letter out of the already open envelop that was marked “Happy 16th Birthday”
