Chapter Six

The King's eyes continued to watch me deeply with a blank look on his face, and my heart hammered in my chest so heavily, it ached. "I'm not your mate," I ground out, my eyes determined. "You must be mistaken," I squeaked out in distress, needing space and air—lots of it. I pushed past the mighty Alpha King, and he let me, but I still did not feel at ease being away from him. It could not be true—it was laughable. Mate to the Alpha King? Tell me another joke. I scoffed in disbelief. With my shaky hands in the air, I turned towards the quiet and calm King. "I am not your mate," I repeated, daring to look into the eyes of the King without permission. A loud gasp tumbled past my lips, and my feet stepped back until my back hit a wall. The King's eyes were almost pitch black, and I knew he was fighting for control with his wolf, Eris. With my blood rushing loudly in my ears, I was about to choose flight when his deep voice tightly rumbled through the whole room. "Don't move." With my wide eyes still watching him, my feet took another step back. "Do not move," he commanded again. I could smell the darkness and aura swirling around him. It was suffocating and overwhelming, but somehow I could tell his wolf wasn’t angry. It felt like he was in—pain. A voice in my head was trying to tell me he wouldn't hurt me, but my body would never believe that. All our lives, hurt and pain were everything we’d known. That wouldn’t stop now because some Alpha King was claiming to be my mate. "I don't want to be here," I whispered quietly. A powerful growl rumbled loudly within his chest, and my back stiffened. "Stop talking, girl," he gritted out. In the blink of an eye, the King was before me, knocking the breath out of me. I was about to stumble back when his hands latched onto my waist in a tight grip, pulling me closer to himself until every part of him was pressed against me. He was almost squashing me, but not enough to hurt. Sizzling tingles sparked between us. The King launched his head between my shoulder and chin. A tremor rippled through my body, and I recalled where this scene had happened before. I let out a loud gasp. "You feel this, don't you?" My heart was pounding so hard, I had to make an extra effort to hear him. The King took in a large inhale. I wanted to push away from him. I didn't understand my reaction—it felt foreign. My defiant body had lost all strength. My soul was yearning for something even I had no idea about. The soft feel of his breath left me shaking. I squeezed my legs tight from the sudden strange ache there. "You may have no wolf, but the matebond is not one to lie." The King growled into my neck again, sending another tremor through me. "Don't you ever deny the matebond, ever again." I flinched at the anger beneath his voice, and I nodded my head violently at him. The King peeled himself away from me so fast, I would have thought I imagined him there. His pitch-black eyes were now back to his intense green, telling me he had regained all control of himself. I was still so shaken, I had no idea how long I just stood there, staring at him. "Get some rest. I'll be back later," he hoarsely commanded as he soundlessly exited the room, like he was desperate to be away from me. I slid down the wall behind me until I collapsed on the floor. What the hell just happened? I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. I had never felt that way before—not even with Lucas. There had to be some sort of explanation. H-he couldn’t be too sure. There had to be a mistake. I was no match for him. I could barely be referred to as a werewolf. I had no powers or skills. I was nothing, so there was no way I would have been mated to the Alpha King. My head fell into my palms. My skin still tingled from the memory of what occurred, and the ache between my legs still pulsed. Lucas lied to me once. I could not allow myself to be fooled once more. He was the King. He could have done something to me. He had all the power and access. No one who had ever hurt me had a real good reason to. I was a mere plaything to them—a game—something to keep them entertained, because that was all I was. I couldn’t confront and accuse the King. The only way to save myself was to play along, follow orders, and find a way to get myself out of this pack safely. I couldn’t be here. When he was done playing around with me, he’d kill me for sure. For once, I had to fight for my life—at least.
