Chapter 5

The Awakening Hall, once brimming with hope and excitement, now echoed with the quiet despair of Xavier’s uncertainties. Alone in the vast space, Xavier’s thoughts were troubled. The mana crystal embedded in his chest was a reminder of his destiny, a mystery still covered in clouds. His thoughts, like a long, unending chain, were interrupted by the creaking of the heavy door. Xavier snapped out of his reverie and looked up to see his broken side reflected in the person who had just entered. “How come Master Orion is here?” Xavier murmured. Master Orion entered the hall with a commanding presence, his silver hair flowing like a cascade of moonlight, and his piercing blue eyes scanning the room with a mixture of curiosity and authority. He wore a golden-white robe adorned with a glowing five-star pattern, radiating his exclusive mana. “Xavier Raymond,” Orion’s deep voice reverberated, “I have come to speak with you.” Xavier looked up, a mix of reverence and anxiety in his eyes. “Master Orion,” he greeted, standing with a show of respect. Master Orion’s penetrating blue eyes examined him carefully, glowing with a strange hue. “The nature of your element requires a more detailed examination. Follow me.” Master Orion didn’t wait for Xavier’s reply. He started walking out of the Awakening Hall. Xavier followed Master Orion without any question. Master Orion led Xavier through a labyrinth of corridors, their grandeur, and intricate designs barely registering in Xavier’s anxious mind. Finally, they arrived at a heavy, ornately carved door. Master Orion pushed it open, revealing a dimly lit chamber filled with ancient artifacts and magical runes. In the center of the room stood a figure cloaked in shadow, exuding an air of authority and mystery. "You shouldn't be here, Orion" The voice of the cloaked man reverted within the room. The figure turned, and Xavier’s eyes widened as recognition dawned. ‘Isn’t that the deep, resonant, and mysterious voice from last night?’ Xavier tried to see the face of the man who had challenged him if he had the ability to embrace his destiny. ‘What is he doing here? Who is this person?’ Xavier wondered, his blackish-blue eyes glowing with curiosity. “Orion,” the figure said, his tone both commanding and familiar. “Oh, I see you’ve brought the young mage.” “Master Darius,” Master Orion responded with a respectful bow. “This is Xavier Raymond. He has awakened an unknown element and requires guidance. I wonder if you can help him in any way?” Master Darius examined Xavier with a piercing gaze. He sent out a purple bolt of mana that encircled Xavier from head to toe. “So, you are the one with the mysterious element. I must admit, your presence intrigues me.” Master Darius retracted his mana and nodded thoughtfully. “However, I cannot accept you as my disciple, for now.” He turned and vanished into the shadows again. Xavier’s heart sank. “Master Darius, please. I’m willing to work hard and prove myself,” Xavier pleaded, falling to his knees. Master Darius suddenly teleported in front of Xavier. The world seemed to pause as Xavier took in the sight before him. Master Darius was devilishly beautiful, he looked ageless, his allure so intense it left Xavier momentarily stunned. Dark purple patterns adorned one side of his face, moving like living tattoos and giving him an air of dangerous mystery. These animated markings would terrify most, but for Xavier, they were insignificant. What mattered was the glimmer of kindness he saw in Master Darius's eyes, a warmth that made him feel safe despite the fearsome appearance. Master Darius’s expression remained stern as he shook his head. “Desire alone is not enough. You must first demonstrate your worth before I consider taking you on.” Xavier nodded, determination etched on his face. “I understand. I’ll prove myself.” He bowed respectfully. Master Darius turned to Master Orion. “Then it is up to you to guide him until he is ready. I will not take him on until he shows genuine potential.” Master Orion’s gaze was sympathetic. “Very well. I shall oversee his training and assist him in discovering the nature of his element.” Master Darius’s gaze was unwavering. “Let us see if he truly possesses the strength to master his power.” With that, Master Darius returned into the shadows, leaving Xavier and Master Orion alone. Master Orion led Xavier to a training room filled with magical runes and tools powered by a big mana crystal. The ambient glow of the room contrasted with the frustration Xavier felt. “Focus on the mana crystal within you,” Orion instructed. “Feel its essence and understand its nature.” Xavier closed his eyes, trying to connect with the warmth emanating from the crystal that had embedded itself in his chest. Despite his efforts, the energy remained elusive. Hours of intense training yielded minimal progress, and frustration grew. Master Orion observed silently, his demeanor unmoved. “Understanding your element will take time and perseverance. The path to mastery is seldom straightforward.” Xavier wiped the sweat from his brow, feeling disheartened. Still, the desire to make his mother proud kept him going. “I’ll keep trying,” Xavier said with confidence. “However, resting is important too. Training ends for today.” Master Orion patted Xavier’s head lightly. Seeing him work so hard made him think of someone precious. As the training session ended, Xavier, exhausted, wandered to the nearby Worry-less Lake. Its waters shimmered with an ethereal glow, offering a momentary escape from his inner turmoil. Sitting by the lake’s edge, Xavier was lost in thought when he heard footsteps approaching. He looked up to see Valen Nurana, a classmate known for his arrogance and disdain towards him. Valen’s smug expression and display of newfound power were evident; he was one of the lucky students who awakened the A-rank earth element. “Still wallowing in your misery, Xavier?” Valen sneered. “Thought you’d given up already.” Xavier's face flushed with anger, but he tried to ignore the taunt. Valen stepped closer, his grin widening as he demonstrated his earth elemental power by causing the ground to tremble and c***k beneath Xavier. Xavier stepped back at the last moment. “Look at me,” Valen boasted, summoning a sharp spike of earth that poked out menacingly towards Xavier and injured his hand. “I’ve got power now, something you’ll never have.” Valen laughed out loud, seeing the crimson blood coming from Xavier’s wound. Xavier’s anger increased, but he still tried to keep his cool. He got up and dusted away the dirt from his clothes. He took out a bandage from his bag and bound it tightly around his wound. After tending to his wound, he looked at Valen with his blackish-blue eyes, glowing dangerously under the moonlight. His face looked expressionless. “I’m not interested in your games, Valen. Go show this circus somewhere else,” Xavier said calmly. Valen’s eyes narrowed with a cruel smile. “Oh, I’m sure you’re not. Especially not after the mess your mother made of things. I’ve heard stories—how she failed spectacularly and left you to deal with the wreckage. You’re nothing but a living joke.” Xavier’s face turned crimson, his rage boiling over. “You know nothing about my mother! Keep her out of this!” Valen’s mocking laughter echoed around the lake. “Oh, but it’s so much fun to remind you of the disgrace you come from. Maybe you’re just like her—worthless and incapable.” Enraged beyond reason, Xavier felt a surge of power rise within him. He focused on the mana crystal embedded in his chest, and an intense dark energy began to manifest. The ground around him trembled, and a puppet-like figure emerged from the swirling shadows. The puppet was a distorted creation of elusive darkness and ethereal light, its limbs twisted and prolonged. Its eyes glowed with an otherworldly, malevolent blackish-blue light, just like Xavier's. As Valen stepped back, it moved with an eerie, fluid motion toward him. The figure’s presence was both menacing and captivating, a sign of something otherworldly that could not be controlled by just anyone. Valen’s eyes widened in terror as the puppet loomed before him, its glowing eyes fixed on him with a predatory gaze. The puppet’s movements were unsettling, and its aura radiated a sense of deep, ancient malice. “What—what is that?” Valen stammered, his bravado evaporating as he took a step back. The puppet advanced with a chilling grace, its shadowy form distorting the air around it. Valen’s fear escalated as the puppet’s eerie presence filled the space. He stumbled backward, his face pale, and his confidence shattered. “I—I can’t deal with this!” Valen cried out, turning and fleeing from the scene with a speed born of terror. “Xa...Xa...Xavier is a monster! The manaless-wander summoned a monster! Mommy! Save me!” As the puppet moved towards Valen, its form began to waver, flickering and dissolving. However, Valen fleed without turning back. The dark energy that sustained it was rapidly draining from Xavier, and the puppet’s menacing presence started to fade. Exhausted and weakened, Xavier collapsed to the ground, the dark energy dissipating into nothingness. He puked blood and collapsed on the ground. Evelyn arrived just in time to witness the aftermath. Her eyes widened in horror as she saw Xavier lying on the ground, pale and unconscious. “Xavi!” Evelyn cried, rushing to his side. “What happened?” She knelt beside him, her healer’s instincts kicking in. “Hold on, Xavi. I’m here.” Evelyn began channeling her healing magic, the soothing light enveloping Xavier’s weakened form. The warmth of her magic began to mend his injuries, and the pain slowly receded, making Xavier’s brow relax. However, the damage was significant, and Xavier’s condition was critical. As Evelyn worked, her concern grew. “You need to stay with me, Xavi. Don’t close your eyes.” She took out all the potions she had, using them to stabilize Xavier's condition. Xavier’s vision blurred as he struggled to stay conscious. The healing magic gradually restored his vitality, but the toll of the fight and his depleted mana left him exhausted. “You’re going to be okay. Just keep holding on,” Evelyn’s voice rang in his ear, so soothing it felt like a lullaby. Xavier had never felt such comfort before. The twin moons glowed brightly in the night sky as time went on, their light reflecting off the shimmering surface of the Worry-less Lake. The ethereal glow of the moons bathed the surroundings in a soft, calming light, adding a touch of magic to the scene. Evelyn’s healing magic continued to work, knitting Xavier’s wounds and restoring his strength. The gentle glow of her magic combined with the serene moonlight created an almost surreal atmosphere, one that seemed to transcend time and space. Xavier’s breathing steadied, and the pain that had made him suffer began to fade. He could feel the warmth of Evelyn’s magic radiated into his entire being, a reassuring presence that held onto him amidst the chaos. The twin moons seemed to watch over them, silent witnesses to their struggle and perseverance. As the minutes passed, Xavier’s strength gradually returned. His vision cleared, and he could make out the worried expression on Evelyn’s face. Despite the exhaustion that still clung to him, he managed a weak smile. “Thank you, Evelyn. I don’t know what I would do without you.” Evelyn returned his smile, though her concern remained. “Just promise me you won’t push yourself so hard next time. We’re in this together, remember?” Xavier nodded, feeling a deep sense of gratitude and camaraderie. "Let's go home!"
