Maddison had just told me about her younger brother and everything that had happened with her parents over the last year. My heart broke for her. I don't know if I could have coped the way she had at such a young age and without a huge support network, especially with having to not just take care of herself but of her brother too. I had such overwhelming pride for her. It explained everything. I felt a little guilty at being relieved that Ben was her brother and not her son after what she had got them through.
