Doctor's Appointment

My pity party ended with a hesitant knock from one of the maids. Having asked them to wait, I shrugged on a t-shirt and joggers. The clothes dragged me into another bout of nostalgia. Clarissa had come alone to collect the food tray which had remained untouched. “But you must eat something,” she said anxiously. I shook my head. “I will ask for something if I’m hungry. Hope the food will be available even after lunch hours?” I aimed it to be teasing, attempting to mask my bitterness with the fake smile, but Clarissa’s eyes widened. Clearly, she thought I was being sarcastic. “Ye-yes, of course, luna.” “Good.” She ambled towards the coffee table to collect the tray but before leaving she said. “Uh…the pack doctor wants to…um, make an appointment with you.” She didn’t meet my eyes while saying this and this gesture was enough for me to know that the pack doctor wanted to check if I was okay after the bonding. I had no choice to evade this even if I wanted to. I sighed and nodded. “Let’s go now then.” There was no point in dawdling. Yet again the girl’s eyes widened as if she was expecting me to refuse and reprimand her. What’s the use of taking out your frustration and anger on someone harmless, someone who wouldn’t dare to fight back? She didn’t know that I knew what it felt like to be blamed and shouted at for something that wasn’t one’s fault, to begin with. Clarissa balanced the tray in one hand while opening the door with the other. I followed her out of the room. The crying session prior to this, the self-loathing and demeaning session oddly made my heart feel lighter. “Is this place always quiet and calm?” I asked as we descended down the stairs. Clarissa, who was walking slightly behind me, unlike Margaret, replied, “Yes. Very few people serve the alpha. Beta Marcus also stays in a different residence but he looks after the office so every morning till night he works from the office in this residence.” She abruptly stopped, maybe assessing if she had given any information she shouldn’t have. I remained quiet not commenting on it. The pack doctor’s clinic was outside the residence. It felt like stepping out of prison after serving 10 years of sentence. The fresh air, the hubbub of the people outside felt like music to my ears. And it hadn’t even been two days since I arrived. I suppressed a sigh. Clarissa handed the tray to another maid who bowed and scurried away. At the entrance of the doctor’s chamber, she asked, “Should I wait?” I shook my head. “I will be able to navigate my way back. Don’t wish to disrupt your duty.” She bowed and walked away. I took a deep breath before entering. The pack doctor, a female beta wolf in her late 40s, immediately stood up when I entered. “I wasn't expecting your visit to be this soon. I am honoured to meet you, luna. This one is Georgia.” Yet again, I acknowledged this with a nod and introduced myself. “I’m Kathryn.” I wouldn’t be honest if I answered with a ‘Same here'. The chamber was spacious and equipped with basic amenities. I took a seat on one of the office chairs while the doctor claimed his high-back one. Unlike the pack doctor back in the Black pack, who always wore a lab coat and gave off a strange vibe of superiority and obnoxiousness, this woman seemed demure and friendly. “I will be frank during this time so I would like to apologize for that before we begin, but since I’m a doctor, it can’t be helped.” She smiled, a mellow curve of lips. “Please. It’s not an issue,” I replied promptly. She typed something in the computer, a huge screen occupying half of her desk and then began her interrogation, her expression completely turning business like. “So…I assume you have mated with the alpha and…know about his condition?Do you experience any discomfort or anything like that?” “No such discomfort.” I didn’t need to elaborate. Georgia nodded in understanding. “And by condition, if you mean him staying in his wolf form then…yes,” I added. I didn’t know how much she knew but I didn’t plan to keep anything in my heart either. I wasn’t told to keep anything a secret, at least not within this pack. “Yes. Unfortunately.” She shook her head, frowning. “Did…did alpha Isaac have this issue from the beginning?” I asked inquisitively. “Yes. It’s more like a curse.” She paused as if assessing my reaction and when I remained passively silent, she leaned forward, folding her hands and stapling her fingers.”Let me tell you the truth since you have already been bonded. His mate….who was from this pack couldn’t accept him and that…broke his heart. His popularity came as an added disadvantage.” I let all this information sink in. It was true that the Renaud pack wasn’t a big name until Alpha Isaac took charge and soon it has become the strongest and fiercest one. “What happened to his mate?” I couldn’t help but ask. She shrugged. “No idea. We never heard from her after she became a rogue.” My heart lurched. Rogue? “She was evicted from the pack?” Georgia shook her head grimly. “It wasn’t anyone else’s decision but hers. No one forced her to leave.” I took her word for it. However, I doubt she would willingly become a rogue. I exhaled a slow, steady breath. “So…why did you guys suddenly start looking for a mate for him?” I wanted to add if he was getting too difficult to handle but I didn’t. Georgia gave a plastic smile in answer. “I wouldn’t be able to say this with certainty, but alpha needs a mate, a companion. Why? It’s for the family to divulge. But he never accepted any girl, not even from this pack until you came along.” My eyes widened. What? Was that why everyone was practically worshipping me? She must have not noticed my reaction since she continued, “We didn’t expect him to…” she glanced at me. “Anyway, may I do a quick check-up?” I nodded, slightly dazed. The check-up was quick but thorough and soon she was smiling with satisfaction. “You look fit and well. I deem your wolf is one strong alpha.” I smiled tersely. We wouldn’t call Astrid an alpha. “That’s good for alpha Isaac,” she added. I looked at her questioningly. She laughed nervously, averting her gaze. But my gaze remained unwavering. “Uh…he is actually not an alpha…” she trailed off, her gaze darting towards me. “What?” “I…shouldn’t be divulging this, but since you are..” she seemed reluctant, but the more she stalled, the more my curiosity heightened. She took a deep breath. “Anyway. He is actually an Enigma.”
