Chapter 10

1978 Words
Leon's POV Hunter explained everything that had happened and it was only morning. Without Hunter, this pack would have fallen apart. I would be far more broken than I am now. I kept my eyes trained on the door, waiting for one of the twins to come out. I needed them to inform me of her progress soon. Otherwise, I was planning on breaking down the door. I had my eyes trained on the door, willing one of the twins to come out and say she was okay. Better yet, I wanted them to come out and say she was back, all back. I need her to be okay. I need to tell her I'm sorry. I should have taken the hit, not her. I should have stopped the war, not her. She should never have been a part of it. Then it happened, and the door opened. Aiden emerged alone, his expression solemn. "Is she awake?" He nodded. "Yes, but she isn't..." he stopped appearing to be searching for the right words. "What? She's what?" I asked as I stood beginning to step around him. He quickly stepped in front of me. "Let me explain before you go in," his eyes were pleading with me. Sighing, I stopped. "Explain," I managed to grit out. "So, she's awake and aware of the world, but her memory is a little hazy. The spell book said that this can happen, but usually, memories come back after some time," he rushed to tell me. "What are you saying?" I pushed. I needed to hear him say it. I needed to know what she would or would not remember. "She doesn't know who Caden or I are. So, it is very possible that she doesn't know you," he whispered the last part, her voice laced with fear. I felt my heart drop to the pit of my stomach. Please remember me. The words played over and over in my head as I tried to build myself up. "She will. We are her mate," Blaze encouraged. However, his tone was as weak as I felt. I couldn’t respond. I felt as though I were about to break. "Thank you for telling me," I whispered to Aiden as I stepped past him and headed into her room. Her scent filled the room and calmed me instantly. Then it happened. I watched as she moved. Her eyes were open. "The box?" I asked as I looked over at Caden. "Ask a doctor," he shrugged. "We only woke her up," he was trying to be snippy, but he was too exhausted to do it properly. "Okay, go and rest," I told him. "Take Aiden with you," I stepped toward the glass box, linking a doctor as I went to her. "Nova," I whispered, praying my voice would bring her back. Before she could say or react in any manner, a doctor came into the room. He was soon followed by June and Ben. "She woke up maybe five minutes ago," I informed the doctor as well as her parents. "I will conduct a physical exam and then we will be able to make an informed decision on whether she can be taken out of the box or not," the doctor turned to inform us. "I would like to conduct the exam in private. Our future Luna deserves that," he reminded us. Quickly, we left the room, but June remained. The doctor had asked her to assist in hopes that having a familiar face around would put Nova at ease. The door closed and it stood between me and her again. I wanted to break it down. Blaze demanded that I ignore the doctor and be in the room with our mate. However, I knew Nova would prefer I wait out here this time. It took everything in me to shove Blaze back down. "She'll be alright," I heard Ben say. I wasn't sure at first if he was talking to me or to himself. When I looked over, he was looking back at me. "She will be," I agreed, which somehow put him at ease. He nodded in agreement, then went and sat down. His eyes were trained on the door. I followed and sat next to him. "She's awake," I whispered. "It's a good sign," he responded. "Her eyes weren't blank," he added. He didn't need to explain, I knew what he meant. After the war with Ryker, I knew that look. Nova's POV "Nova," the man in front of me whispered. His voice sounded familiar, but it also didn't. Then two other people came into the room. It took my eyes a moment to adjust and focus on their faces. Familiarity. That was all I felt. I couldn't put names or memories to the faces I was seeing. Important. They are important to me. I know that. A white coat man said he wanted to run tests on me and then the men left, but the woman and the white coat man stayed. I watched them carefully, confused. "We're okay," I heard a voice coming from inside my head. "Who are you?" I thought back. Her voice was calming. "Nova, I'm Sky. I'm your wolf. You're a she-wolf," she spoke kindly. Her tone was soothing. I thought for a moment, trying to remember. She-wolf. She's right, I'm a she-wolf. Sky. Yes, I knew Sky. "We've been through a lot. It will take you some time for you to remember everything. Don't push it," she told me. However, I could feel her desire for me to remember quickly. She was missing someone. Should I also be missing them? Who are they? "What happened? Where am I?" I asked her as I watched the woman and man go around my case checking something. Then they opened part of the case and told me they were going to take some blood. "We were impaled basically. It was a sword of silver with some wolfsbane. We should have died, but you fought hard," she sounded impressed. "Which could explain your difficulty remembering." "Can you tell me who the man and woman are?" I questioned, hoping a name would help jog my memory. "Well, the doctor, I'm not sure, but the woman is June," she paused, waiting to see if I had any recognition, but when I didn't respond she continued. "She's your adoptive mom." "My mom? Where is my biological mom?" I was adopted? "She died and so did dad," she informed me. "Your adoptive dad, Ben, is in the hallway," she told me. "Oh..." was all I could manage. I didn't know how to feel. It felt as though the room was spinning. How could I not remember any of it? How could I not remember Sky? Why was everything just familiar? Sky was quiet for a long while. We both watched as the doctor and June checked screens and sent out my blood for testing. The doctor stepped out for a moment and then June grabbed the chair near the case and pulled it closer. She sat down and looked at me. Her gaze was searching for something. I creased my brow, trying to figure out what she was looking for. "Nova," she whispered. Her voice sounded as though she were close to tears. "I'm so happy. We thought we had lost you," she raised her hand to touch the glass. "Talk to her," encouraged Sky. "And say what exactly?" I asked. To Sky, this was a person she knew. We knew, but I couldn't remember. I wished I could, but couldn't. "Anything, just say something," she urged. "Hi," I responded, my voice sounding horse. I watched as her face brightened with one single word. "Sweety, you can speak. That's a good sign," a smile spread across her lips. "I can," I tried hard to give her a genuine smile back. She was about to say something more when the door opened and the doctor walked in looking over his clipboard. "We really need to finish this checkup before the young Alpha orders my death," he tried to make it a joke, but his fear was evident. "How are the results?" June asked. "She seems to be in pretty good shape, all things considering," he responded. "Has she spoken?" June nodded. "Yes, a few words. Which is an excellent sign," she informed him. "Her voice is a little horse, but that's to be expected." "That is a good sign, " he agreed and then jotted something down on his clipboard. "She looks to be in pretty good shape," he decided as he looked up from his note-taking. "Then we can remove her from the case?" She asked, trying not to sound as hopeful as she was. He walked over and opened a door on the case. "Rose thought of everything," he muttered. "Don't mind my hand. I'm simply checking the site of your wound," he informed me as he raised my shirt. I felt his hands gently brushing over my skin. "Feels and looks as though you have healed well," he said more to June than to me. He pulled out his hands and closed the glass. Then he wrote another note. "Does that mean what I think that means?" She peered at him full of hope. He nodded. "I believe it would do her good to be taken from the case," he said. His eyes changed color for a moment. "Two wolves are on their way. They will help us move Nova to a proper hospital bed," he told June. I watched as she quickly stood from her chair and pushed it back. Then a moment later, two wolves came in. They listened to instructions from the doctor. When they began to struggle to get the case open and extract me from it. "I'll link Rose," June quickly offered. In the blink of an eye, a she-wolf came into the room. Before she closed the door, she turned back to say something and then closed the door. "Having some trouble?" She grinned. "Yes," the doctor appeared slightly irritated. The she-wolf, who seemed to be Rose, didn't appear fazed by his tone. "Okay, it's actually quite simple," she smiled. Then she went about explaining and directing the wolves how to get me out of this glass box. Maybe thirty minutes later, I was lying on a bed without the glass barrier surrounding me. The doctor did one final check before leaving the room. Rose bowed and then exited as well. Soon, the door opened and two wolves walked back in. One I presumed was the young Alpha the doctor had mentioned and the other must have been Ben. I watched as they all looked at me as though they were staring at a ghost. No one said a word for a long time. So long it became awkward. "Nova," finally the young Alpha said as he stepped forward. He reached for my hand and I pulled away slightly. That one motion appeared to break him in some way. He stepped back. "Sweety, don't you remember Leon?" June asked as she came over to me. I peered over at him, willing myself to remember. But nothing. "You don't have to force yourself," she tried to calm me. "It could be because of trauma. I'm sure your memory will come back," she tried to explain. Something inside urged me to be honest. I could have lied. I could have had Sky tell me everything I needed to know. I could fake it until I made it. Until my memories came back. But I needed to be honest. Maybe it would be a good thing. Maybe being honest would somehow help me to gain back my memories. "I don't remember anything," I looked at her, Ben, and Leon. I remembered nothing about these people or my own life. Nothing.
