Chapter 6 Reborn with a Vengeance!

808 Words
“Tanae, are you okay? Did you get burned?” Camille frantically grabbed tissues, hurriedly trying to wipe the spilled soup off Stina’s dress. Though there was a layer of fabric, Tanae’s dress was thin, and the skin underneath had turned red from the scalding liquid. Furious, she couldn’t hide her true nature, shouting, “Sis, how could you do this!” Stina, however, secretly breathed a sigh of relief. She was glad she had arrived just in time. What if—what if her mother had taken a sip of that soup… She wasn’t sure if the soup was tainted, but she couldn’t risk letting her mother touch anything that had passed through the hands of this mother-daughter duo. She could never forget the image of her mother from her past life—emaciated, lying on a hospital bed, enduring over a month of post-surgery agony before finally closing her eyes forever. Stina’s nose burned with emotion, ignoring the scolding from the two women. Her gaze shifted to Lydia, who was propped up on the hospital bed. She was almost afraid to move closer, terrified that the scene before her would vanish like countless dreams from her past life. Her voice hoarse, she whispered softly, “Mom.” Lydia, frail and gaunt from her illness, sat bathed in the warm sunlight streaming through the window, her skin almost translucent. Though surprised by her daughter’s reaction, she didn’t dwell on it. She hadn’t planned to drink the soup anyway. “What brings you here now? I thought you were swamped with work?” Lydia smiled gently as she watched her daughter approach. “Mom,” Stina’s eyes welled up as she rushed to the bedside, clutching Lydia’s arm tightly, “Mom, Mom, I’ve missed you so much.” Lydia was momentarily stunned by her daughter’s unusual behavior, but then, realizing they hadn’t seen each other in two days, she softened. Gently stroking Stina’s head, she asked, “What’s wrong? Is work too demanding? Are you exhausted?” Stina buried her face in her mother’s chest, shaking her head silently, afraid that if she spoke, she’d burst into tears. Tanae, feeling utterly ignored, fumed, her voice trembling with anger. “You… Aunt Lydia, this soup was originally meant for my mom, but she thought of you, given your poor health, so she brought it specially. It’s packed with rare herbs, not something just anyone can get. Ever since you fell ill, my mom has been taking such good care of you…” That was the last straw. Stina’s body shook with rage as she shot to her feet. “My mom doesn’t need it! There are doctors and nurses here—we don’t need your help! Get out!” Rare herbs? What a joke! It was just an excuse to meddle with the medical treatment. In her past life, her mother must have died because of their so-called “care.” Back then, Stina had her reservations about Camille, but her mother had always said that the failure of her marriage was between her and her father, and that Stina shouldn’t blame others. Seeing her mother’s reluctance to fight, Stina had chosen not to stir up conflict either. After her mother fell ill, Camille and her daughter occasionally came to visit. Though Stina resented them inwardly, she always kept up a polite facade. Little did she know, these two were sinister enough to plot her mother’s death just to embezzle her mother’s shares. Having been granted a second chance at life, Stina was determined to get her revenge. She swore she’d make this mother-daughter pair pay for what they’d done and face the consequences of their wicked deeds. Outside the room, Warner stood rooted to the spot, clutching a gift in his hand. “Mr. Miller, should we still go in?” he asked hesitantly. They had come solely at the elderly Mrs. Miller’s behest to pay a visit, but they had accidentally walked into a full-blown drama. His eyes narrowed as he replied coolly, “Not now. We’ll come another time.” The two left, and shortly after, Camille also exited the room, hurrying off to buy clothes for Tanae. Inside the ward, only three people remained. Tanae’s expression shifted, and for a moment, it seemed as though she could spot hickeys on Stina’s neck. Her long nails dug into the flesh of her palm. After a moment, her expression smoothed over. She looked at Stina, biting her lip hesitantly. “Sis, there’s something I need to ask you. Can you step outside for a sec?” She grabbed Stina’s arm and dragged her out of the room. When they reached the nearby stairwell and found themselves alone, Tanae asked, “Sis, are you okay? I noticed you didn’t come home last night. I was freaking out.”
