**Episode 2: First Impressions**
The rest of the morning dragged on for Elowyn. She kept replaying the events in her head: the collision in the hallway, Calvin’s smile, and the way he’d asked her to lunch. It all seemed surreal, like she was living in someone else’s life for a moment. Her mind raced with questions. Why would Calvin Taylor, the most popular guy in school, want to have lunch with her? Did he really want to get to know her, or was this some kind of prank?
Sitting in her second-period math class, Elowyn could barely focus on the equations in front of her. Mrs. Patterson's monotone lecture on quadratic functions was nothing compared to the flurry of thoughts swirling in her brain. Her pencil hovered uselessly over her notebook as she zoned out, imagining how lunch with Calvin might go.
“Miss Wilson?” Mrs. Patterson’s voice cut through her thoughts, sharp as a blade. Elowyn snapped to attention, realizing too late that the teacher had asked her a question.
“Um, I’m sorry, could you repeat that?” she asked, her face flushing as a few of her classmates snickered.
“I asked if you could solve the equation on the board,” Mrs. Patterson said, raising an eyebrow.
Elowyn stared at the board, the numbers blurring together in her vision. She was normally good at math—one of the best in the class, actually—but today, her mind was anywhere but here.
“I, um, I think it’s…” She stumbled over her words, trying to piece together the answer.
Before she could finish, a boy in the back of the room called out the solution, and Mrs. Patterson, clearly unimpressed, moved on without another word. Elowyn slumped in her seat, feeling the weight of embarrassment settle on her shoulders.
*Focus, Elowyn,* she scolded herself, though her thoughts kept drifting back to Calvin. What would her friends say when they found out she was having lunch with him? More importantly, what would people like *his* friends think? She could already picture it—Calvin’s popular friends, all staring at her, silently judging. She wasn’t like them, and she didn’t belong in their world.
The rest of the class passed in a blur, and before Elowyn knew it, the lunch bell rang. Her heart pounded in her chest as she packed up her things and made her way to the cafeteria. Every step felt heavier than the last, like she was walking toward some monumental event that could change everything. And maybe it would.
When she reached the cafeteria doors, she hesitated. Inside, students were already scattered at their usual tables, and the noise of laughter and conversation filled the air. Elowyn scanned the room, half-expecting Calvin to be sitting with his usual crowd—the football players, cheerleaders, and other popular kids. But to her surprise, he wasn’t. Instead, he was standing by the entrance, waiting for her.
“Hey, you made it,” Calvin said, flashing that easy smile again.
“Yeah,” Elowyn replied, feeling a little breathless. “I did.”
He nodded toward a table near the windows, away from the loudest groups. “Want to sit over there?”
“Sure,” Elowyn said, relieved that he hadn’t suggested sitting with his friends. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.
As they walked over to the table, Elowyn noticed a few heads turning in their direction. Whispers followed them like a shadow, and she could almost hear the questions: *Why is Calvin Taylor sitting with her? What’s going on?*
They sat down across from each other, and for a moment, an awkward silence hung in the air. Elowyn wasn’t sure what to say. She hadn’t expected this to actually happen. But Calvin seemed unfazed.
“So, what’s your deal?” Calvin asked, leaning forward slightly. “I don’t think we’ve ever really talked before.”
Elowyn blinked, caught off guard by the question. “My deal?”
“Yeah,” he said with a shrug. “Like, what’s your story? You’re always so quiet, and I never see you at any of the school events.”
“I’m just… busy, I guess,” Elowyn said, fidgeting with her hands. “I’ve got a lot going on with classes and college applications.”
“College apps, huh? Where are you applying?”
“A few places. Mostly schools with good English programs,” she said, relaxing a little. It was easier to talk about school—it was familiar territory. “I’m really into literature.”
Calvin’s eyes lit up with interest. “That’s cool. I’m not much of a reader myself, but I can appreciate it. What’s your favorite book?”
Elowyn hesitated for a moment, unsure if Calvin would care about her answer. But then again, he had asked. “Probably *Pride and Prejudice*,” she said, her voice soft. “It’s a classic.”
“Really? That’s the one with Mr. Darcy, right?”
Elowyn smiled, surprised he even knew that much. “Yeah, that’s the one.”
Calvin leaned back in his chair, grinning. “Okay, confession time. I had to read that book last year for class. I wasn’t a fan at first, but I actually thought it was pretty interesting by the end. Don’t tell anyone, though. I’ve got a reputation to maintain.”
Elowyn laughed, the tension between them easing. Maybe this wasn’t going to be as awkward as she thought.
They talked more as they ate, the conversation flowing more naturally than Elowyn had expected. Calvin asked her about her favorite authors, her plans for the future, and even a little about her family. In return, he shared stories about his time on the football team, his dream of playing in college, and his love for old movies—a detail that surprised Elowyn.
“I never would’ve pegged you for a classic movie buff,” she said, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah, I guess I’ve got a few surprises up my sleeve,” Calvin said with a grin.
As they talked, Elowyn found herself forgetting the whispers and the stares from the other students. She wasn’t just sitting with Calvin Taylor, the quarterback. She was talking to Calvin, the guy who liked old movies and secretly enjoyed *Pride and Prejudice*. It was… nice.
But as the lunch period wore on, Elowyn couldn’t shake the feeling that this was too good to be true. Why was Calvin really talking to her? Why did he care?
“So, can I ask you something?” Elowyn said, her voice a little more serious now.
“Sure, shoot,” Calvin replied, his smile fading slightly as he picked up on her change in tone.
“Why me?” Elowyn asked, her fingers fiddling with the strap of her bag. “Why did you ask me to lunch?”
Calvin seemed taken aback by the question, but he didn’t hesitate in answering. “Why not?”
Elowyn frowned. “That’s not really an answer.”
He sighed, leaning forward again. “Look, Elowyn, you’re different. You’re smart, quiet, and you don’t seem to care about all the stuff that everyone else gets caught up in. I’ve seen you around. You’re not like the other girls who are constantly trying to get my attention. It’s… refreshing.”
Elowyn blinked, her heart pounding in her chest. “So, you’re saying I’m not like other girls?”
Calvin winced. “Okay, that sounded bad. I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant that you’re real, you know? You’re not fake or trying to impress anyone. I like that.”
Elowyn didn’t know how to respond to that. Part of her wanted to believe him, but another part of her was still skeptical. Was he just saying what he thought she wanted to hear? Or did he actually mean it?
Before she could say anything, the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. Calvin stood up, slinging his bag over his shoulder.
“Listen, I had a good time,” he said, his smile returning. “We should do this again sometime.”
“Yeah,” Elowyn said, still feeling a little dazed. “Maybe.”
Calvin nodded, giving her one last smile before heading toward the doors. Elowyn watched him go, her mind racing. She couldn’t believe what had just happened. Had she really just had lunch with Calvin Taylor? And, more importantly, had she actually enjoyed it?
As she gathered her things and headed to her next class, Elowyn couldn’t help but wonder what this all meant. Was Calvin just being nice? Or was there something more to his interest in her?
One thing was for sure: her life was definitely about to get a lot more complicated.

**Episode 2 (continued)**
The afternoon felt like it dragged on forever. Elowyn couldn't focus on her classes, and all the while, whispers of her lunch with Calvin spread like wildfire. When she met up with her friends after school, she was bombarded with questions.
Her best friend, Tara, was the first to pounce. "Okay, spill. I saw you with Calvin at lunch. What the heck is going on?"
Elowyn hesitated. How could she explain what had happened when she barely understood it herself?
"It was just lunch," she said, shrugging. "He asked, and I said yes."
Tara stared at her, wide-eyed. "Just lunch? Elowyn, that's *Calvin Taylor*. The guy doesn't just randomly ask girls to lunch."
"I don't know, Tara. It just...
